The said Edwin Forrest, after lear: from deponent who been the guects at ber said sister's and some turther un- important conversation, remarked that this deponent ‘Was more attached to her said sister then to him, and that ber said sister had endeavored to prejudice this Set jainst him He then proceeded to speak ofher said sister in very reproschtal terma. The ‘terms used by said Edwin Forrest, in reference to her sister, were extremely barsh, end, as she believed, an- just. In reply to some one of them, she can! re- ‘member precitely which ono, this deponent, having tor a moment lost her self-command, gave to said Ed- win Forrest @ direct contradiction, and, in so doing, ured an ex) hich she admits to beve been im- proper. raid Edwin Forrest thereupon, instantly arese from his seat aud eaid, in s flerce and angry tone, that ne man should eo address him and live, and that he would vot live with any woman who did so. ‘This deponent says that this occurred in the house, 284 Twenty-second street, belonging to the sald Edwin Forrest, which bad been occupied as their family res- Sdence for nearly teu years, They continued to reside together therein and tocohabit as man and wife, un til the twenty-eighth day of April, in the same year. Between t said eighteeuth of January and the seid twenty-eighth of April the said Edwin Forrest was pot abrent from his said house as many as fourteen nights; and with, at the utmost, that exception, she affirms that the said Edwin Forrest and this depencat did, between the dates lust aforesaid, each occupy the same chamberand bed Aud this deponent further says that several days af- ter the said eighteenth day of January, he, the said Bawin Forrest, went out ome morning to visit his premises at Fontbill, in the county of Westchester, in company with Mr Parke Godwin, and returned with said Mr. Godwin to dinner. Before leaving for said journey, the seid Kdwin Forrest stated that he wished tb send a letter to che post office.and asked whether the servant, Robert, could ge with it immediately. Deponent replied affirmatively, and extended her band to take the letter. The said Kdwin Forrest ina short manner. indicating il] humor or impatience, id,"No, tell Robkrt to come here,” and deponent called said Robert, who came and received said letter, which was addrested to Mr. Geo Jamison, at New Orleans. Some reflection upon the manner of said Edwin Forrest, coupled with the address of said let. ter, called to depon wind the circumstances hereinafter pext tioned. The said George Jami- eon several months betere, had handed to this depo- nent & letter, without signature, containing some ro- mantic lamguage and verses addcessed te “Vonsu- elo.” This deponent koew nothing of the contents of said letter when so banded to her, and had no fuspicion of any impropriety therein; nor did be open it in the presence of said Jamison. Pricer to the morning last referred to, said letter had laim in a drawer in said house from sometime in Avgurt. one thousand eight hundred and forty-eight. Th id drewer was generally unlocked, ‘and when locked, could be opened by a key which was said Ed- always carried by said Edwin Forrest; he, win Forrest, having bimselt on one occasion in July, eighteen hundred and forty-eight. unlocked such drawer for this depo with his said key; her attea- betug thus called tothe subject, she looked for issed the said letter. After dinner, and atter Mr. bad left, the said Edwin Fort requested this deponent to step into the jibrary, and there unlooked his own drawer, took from it said “Consuelo” letter, om it was written; this y that it was written by ison; the said Edwin Forrest expressed himee!{ with vehemence ani anger; spoke of it asaa insult, and censured this deponent for keeping it, for not destroying it. and for not showing it to him, each form of censure being reiterated in various forms. But this deponent further rays, that neither at that time, nor st any other time previously to the month of De- cember, one thourand eight hundred aad forty nine, did the said Edwin Ferrest ever evince the slightest jealousy of this deponent, or any doubt of her and chastity, either to herself or in her heari: port pias ms ty tat h letter, and her age hak, jeponent says suel , ak, and unguarded answer to the sume, have been, accord: ingly, used in evidence against her, before the Legisla- ture of nsylveuia, a she learns from the news- papers, verily believes, and are relied upon by said Edwin Forrest ese tacit admisrion. But she says that, though she aimed at no defence the of infidelity, her said answer contains persem would proneunce an assertion of her entire ia- nocence in that respect, ‘This deponent saya, that such letter of the twenty- fourth of December, ene thousand cight hundred and ained the first intimation received by id Edwin Forrest suspeeted, or had any question y her purit; ly, during the same month, he, the said ed to this deponent, at re! deponent as miserable an he was determined to th bmit to — him happy snd contented ; & divorce esseutial to him, she to that, painful as it was, so that it did pot go upon grounds that would dishonor or de- , for the time, consulted counsel during the first week of January, in the present year, in consequence of understanding that the said Hdwia Forrest engaged counsel and was about te avail himself of this deponent’s submissivencss aforesaid, and to obtain @ divorce accordingly. She applied for such advice, merely to secure & , support tor herself, ands compliance with the mentioned oon- dition. This deponent is ifformed by her said counsel, and bell thet, on the twenty-ninth day of January last, interview was, accordingly, Raa by him with two gentlemen, the counsel for said Edwin For- rest, at the house of one of them, when the counsel for this deponent, by this deponent’s authority, stated that she would not oppose any application which might be made to Any court, or to any legislature. for a divorce on the following conditions, to wit :—That speek: no impurity ehould be imputed to ber; that fied annual allowance should be secured to that compensation should be made to an agent to at- tend any Legislature to which application might be made for the purposn of watching the progress of the case, and warzing her if an attempt should be made, in any way, to impeach her chastity. This deponent in informed by her said counsel, and believes, that no other terms were proposed or suggested on either side; unt one of sald opposing counsel, a resident of the city of Philadelpbia. expressed bis’ entire satisfaction with the said terms proposed, except that he feared it would be impracticable to do anything, without in some degree, imputing uncharte demeanor; andthatthe other gentleman thought the allowance too high. This deponent says that. through the egency of « matual fiend. she assented toa reduction of the allowance to the amount desired and apecited by said Edwin Por- rest, and shortly thereatter wae furnished by his agente with a draft of a petition for a divoroe, inte to be presented to the Legislature of Pennayl nia, of which the aunexed schedule, marked Ne. 2. is s copy, save that the word “criminal” was not in ssid draft. nnd there was no signature, jurat or notice to the same, Bueb paper was eent to her, in order that ———— Passi, 80 ats imprestiosble, © fall end sfticient defence on ber part.
