EWS BY THE MAILS. Our Washington Correspondence, Wasuinaton, Dec. 18, 1850. Second Washington Concert of Jenny Lind. The concert this evening, of Jenny Lind, carried the town by storm. Her first evening thoroughly diffused the contagion among our citizens. The report that she passed last evening with the Pre- sident and his family, her visit to the House of Representatives to-day, and the understanding she ‘was at the Patent Office with the President and daughter, together with the assurance that all the lions would be at the National Hall to-night, set all the world within this expanded village into ac- tive motion. The scene at Willard’s Hotel till as date as eight o'clock thisevening, was very curious and interesting ; the complaints concerning tickets and seats were very amusing, and if half of them were correct, there was some sorry huckstering among the speculators. The sur- rounding country sent in large detachments —the hotels were filled with strangers—the town wasalive. And yet the hall was not fall. ‘Twenty-five hundred people, we suppose, would be equal to the number of the house. The Presi- dent and Cabinet, members of the Senate and House, Supreme Judges, &c., were resent. Jenny sung with great enthusiasm; but there was evi- dence of a slight coldin her voice. The gallery possession of the programme. At the close of the first part, they called for the “ Echo.” Jenny complied. The boys were in raptures, and struck off into a demonstration of theirown Jenny Lind; the President, Mr. Webster, Mr. Foote, end Gen. Cass, were each given three cheers. Three were then proposed fer Harry Clay, and such enthusiasm as was exhibited in the re: ee is only to be called up by the presence of Clay Jenny closed the concert with ** Hail Con lumbia;” at the close of which, Mr. Webster rose and bowed to Jevuy, and Jeuny curtsied to Mr. ‘Webster, and the compliment was twice repeated between them, when Jenny disappeared. Mr. Webster then remembered that the whole house should have stood up when that noble song was sung by Jenny Lind. Take it all together, this concert was a very good, a very enthusiastic, and a very remarkable efluir. The audience was ele- gant, the singing was enthusiastic, the boys were enthusiastic, and the whole aflair went off with considerable éclat, and to the entire satisfaction ot all concerned. Our Baltimore Correspondence. Baxrmiore, December 17, 1850. The Jenny Lind Excitement—Trouble among the Churches—Hauling the Preachers over the Coals —Facts from a Looker On—Leader's Meetings— A Case of Kidnapping, §c. The intense excitement that prevailed in our city during the past week, relative to the presence and concerts of Jenny Lind, still continues, and the reports of her concerts at Washington are Jooked for with intense interest. The respect en- tertained for her amounts almost to adoration—in- deed, 1 doubt whether she has caused so strong a sensation in any other city. Her visit has, however, produced considerable trouble among the churches, which may, probably, lead toa rupture in some cases. The great masse of the Presbyterians, Baptists, and the Episcopal and Protestant Methodists, refused to attend her concerts, some on account of what they deemed the impropriety of paying such prices, others be- cause the concerts were given in a theatre, and others again, because they considered it improper for professional Christians to be seen in the con- certroom. The Rev. Mr. Heiner, of the Presb terian church, being offered a $7 ticket for $2 by one of the speculators, who found it impossible to dispose of all the tickets he had purchased, at- tended the Jast concert ; the Rev. Mr. Reese, ei. tor of the Methodist Protestant, having written a polite note to Mr. Barnum, was presented with a couple of tickets, and was present at the third con- cert, with his lady. The her. Mr. Clemm, of the Methocist Episcopal Church, d tened with delight, though “*acknewledging the corn’’ now. The Rey. Mr. Donetian, of the Catholic Church, was present at the concert given to the school i children op Saturday morning, aad also attended on Saturday evening. He endeavored to persuade Father Hickey to a rer f him, but the old gen- deman pereniptori) refuse The Rev. They ¢ Jer his attendance at a Tebearsal, as more reprely ble than if he had gone openly © a concert. Certain it is, that his preseace there, bas shorn him of e great deal of the influence that he formeily held over the minds of his con- gregation b Among the Methodist Episcopals the anxiety to eee Jenny, ond hear her sing, could not be with- stood, and, in addition to the Rev. Mr. Clem, I ob- served one of the “pillars” of the Charles street church, a ciess leader, seated in the dress circle with an opera cap and glees. On the imody, seated the author of a work on methodist and in all parts of the house, on each night of the concerts, could be observed, class leaders, sabbath hool teachers, end young’ professors of religion, e sit! ig behind pil- dare ena im the doorwa' as ifdoubting the proprie- ty of their presence. The Rev. Mr. Kurta of the Ge — reformed church, was elso I believe pre- 1 ‘ease that the leaders’ meetings of the metho- dist episcopal church of the past — would at- ford some rich scenes, if correctly ported. Jenn Lind bas been the constant theme ol of discussion. 4 not of their prayers—-those who were able to pay the price of tickets defending her, and those who ceuld not spare the money eloquently dilating on the, impropriety of attending. Among the pro- testant epecopals all are left to judge for them- selves of the propriety or impropriety of attending the concer! room, consequently there is no trouble in that church, the Catholic charch. She did arrive at two o'clock to-day, however, but the weather is too wopropitious this evening to allow of out door mu- sical entertainments. The German Liedertafel, forming 4 chorus of forty voices, were to have taken part in the serenade. The seats engaged for to-morrow eveniog show that her début hele will be by 8 fashionable audience, exceeding thet of Jenny Lind’s first sppearance in the same theatre.
