NEWS BY THE MAIL Our Washington Correspodence. The Trecswry Report—Its Contents—The Jenny Iumd Excitement, §c. Wasutneton, Dec. 18, 1850. The report of the Secretary of the Treasury is at length completed, but in consequence of the adjournment of the Senate, it will not be sent in te Congress till Monday. It is represented as be- ing a very elaborate and able document, replete with valuable and interesting statistics, going to Show the operation of the ad valorum system and its defeets, as well as the difficulties which exist in carrying out the sub-treasury law intact, The New York and Philadelphia prese will be snpplied with copies as soon as Congress receives it, in the same manner in which the President’s message was delivered. An important fact will appear in the report— namely, that of the amount coined in the United States, since the formation of the government up to the first November last, the Philadelphia mint coined three-tourths. Thus the whole amouat coined was $186 572,000; out of this the Philadel- pnia mint coiaed upwards of $148,000,000. This shows that the branch mints are of very little ser- vice to the public, and it is supposed the facts will be used as an argument against the establishment of a branch mint in New York. I eannet see, however, that it would afford any argument against removing the mint to New York—a proposition which would not meet with much vor from New Yorkers, however much it might shock the sensibilites of their straight collared neighbors. lt is extremely doubtful whether any increase will be voted upon the duty on coal and iren, this session—the democratic members of the Penasyl- vania delegation, with one or two exceptions, re- furing, so fer, to join the movement. Itis well known thet Mr. Walker was not opposed to a slight increase cn these articles, provided it could be done without involviag his free trade princi- ples; ard the history of the tsa at’ since the lishment of the tanfl of 1846, shows that it would have been wise policy to have placed the ticles of iroa end coal upon a better footi ing than they are. The defeat of a resolution to give @ better protection to these articles, will only be tem- )Orary—it must ultimately prevail. ‘The ad valo- rem foreign valuation, and the law duty upon the great staple of some of the most important ‘Stat ere the salient points in the present tariff, which will, Sooner or later, cause its fall, if not modified. A very absurd paragreph appears in one of the latters of a correspendent from this place—namely, that Mr. Schenek, at present a member of Con- gre 88 from Obio, is pressed by the administration to eecept a chargeship. Fudge! The pre: is on the other side. The administration is not quite £0 badly off aste be obliged to “ press” gentle- men of Mr. Schenck’s calibre, to “accept” the honorable eppointment of a representative of the country abroad. Mr. Schenck and his friends are pressing the President to appoint him, and they may per- haps succeed jut the announcement that it has been offered hun, and merely awaits his pleasure, is ridiculeus. The Jenoy Lind excitement is reaching this city, and will be in full blast, doubtless, by Monday, when the first concert comes off. By the wa’ there seems to be a disposition on the part of ladies to go in full opera dress, instead of jain evening costume, as at Tripler Hall in New Yorks ork, itis understood that the President and family, to- gether with the members of the cabinet and the diplomatic corps, will be present at the first con- cert A large number of tickets are already dis+ posed of—price $7 each. The seats are not to be numbered tie first evening, but will be afterwards. ‘The hell is beautifully fitted up, and will, it ia be lieved, be one of the best rooms for sound in the coun ry. It will bold upwards of 3,000 persons com- fortably seated. A movement is on foot to tender to Messrs. Ree- side and Willard, the proprietors of the hall, a complimentery benefit, for their spirited conduct in filting the place up at such short notice. The celebrated Ravel troupe have leased the hall, aud = give areries of performances as soon as it can be prepared, afier Jenny Lind’s concerts. —— perceive, this village is going ahead. Our Baltimore Correspondence, Barron, Dec. 14, 1850. Jenny Lind and the Public School Chilaren—Invi- tation to hear her—Amother Green Spot im her Life—Smgular Robbery, Fc. Dunag the whole of the present week the ex- citement relative to Jenny Lind has been so great that the public school teachers have found it next to impossible to command the attention of the chil- dten 0 es to teach them properly. They were all afflicted with a hopeless mania, and seemed to be longing fora sight of the fair Swede. A happy crotchet entered the head of the Mayor yesterday— to make an appeal to Jenny in their behalf, toallow them an opportunity to see and hear her this morn- ing. She had no sooner received it than she gave a prompt and immediate answer, requesiog them to meet her al ten o’elock this morning, at the Front Street Theetre—that it would afford her unbound- ed gratification to meet them, and if possible glad- den their hearts aad cause a smile of pleasure to ra- diate from their \ oung ard blooming countenances. | The coner que ace is, that at the time I write they | are arsembiung in thousands ‘anous school houses, all dressed in their Sunday attire, and the happiest looking children that | have seen for many a day.
