Mr. Mason has been re-elected to the United States Senate, from the State of Virginia, almost without a show of opposition When we consider that he was one of the inflexible twelve ultras of the Senate, through whose exertiors the Compro- mise bill was broken up; and that he was one of the ten protestents signing the protest against the admission of Calitornia, after the bill had passed in a ceparate form; when we consider that he stood fully up to the policy suggested by Mr. Calhoun and after the death of thet distingu‘shed man, was regarded as the senatorial leader of the Southern ultra’: —the re-election of Mr. nm, by so large a vote as he received, indicates that the public sentiment of V ja sustains his conduct, and endorses the condittons of secession which he 0 repeatedly edvanced. But Mr Mason was the author of the Fugitive law. He originated the measure—framed the bill —apd it passed according to his amendments; and the bill is bie, almost verbatim, from beginning to end, tis an important law to Virginia, lying so aver the free States She feels it to be so; and m this law stands the increased popularity of r. Mason inthe Legislature. The fact that the ultra course of himself and col- league is not disapproved, is sufficient to remove any doubt of the readiaess of Virginia to retaliate, or even to secede, if provoked to it by Northern nullticstion ‘There is a very instructive quarrel going on be- tween Mr. Rives ond Father Ritchie, on the pub- ic printing. Between them they have abundantly abews the necessity of a reform of the extensive and expensive abuses of the existing system. By turning State’s evidence, they are both rendering the public a very considerable service We preeume you will have received the report of the Secretary of the Treasury on the finances Its importance exceeds that of all the other public documents ot the session together. Its exhibition ef the fiaeners and of the working of the ad valo- renrs, is worthy of attention in Wall street. Atthe rame time, we understand a movement is to fol Ww this report, in behalf of a better tariff, of which we have no hope, this session, at all Our Balumore Correspondence. The Late Torn do at Capo Girardeau, Mo. | A correspondent of the St. Louis, (Md.,) Repub. | l'cam, wrinng from Cape Girardeau, under date of the 27th ult » £AY8:—— ** About four o'clock this evening we landed at this place, with the Saranek, bound for New Or- leans, for the purpose of taking on board some pas- | sengers who had hailed the boat. Just after she | had lended and made fast, the clouds assumed the appearance of a storm, and as we were compara | uvely sefe, we thought best to hold on for a few minutes until it would pass, as the wind threatened to blow bard. Consequently extra lines were gotten out, but before we had time te get those on board who went onton the wharf boat to make her fast, | the storm struck the stern, (blowing up stream at | the time,) and in less than five minutes the whole | entire cabin, fixtures end furniture, chimneys, | pipes, and in fact everything above the main deck, wes blown to pieces. There were some two hun: dred ploughs on the roof—they were blown for hundreds of yaris from the boat ; part of the rail- | ing was carried onthe top of the hill, one mile from | the boat. The wharf-boat, Champlain, was also blown to pieces. The hill-side was literally ¢o- vered with the wreck of the boats. But, strange to say, no one on board was killed, though nearly all were injured. Jos. McCoy, pilot at the wheel, when landed, was blown out of the pilot house and fell through the cabip, near the hee houee, his ribs broken and shouldef eut, but we think he may recover. Samuel Hill, engineer, was blown out of his room, | end fell between the boats, badly satel. Mr. Bailey, passenger, was thrown on a hog chain, and also severely injured, though the physician thinks they will eli get over it. Many others were injured. Not one of the crew, or passenge: cabin, but has lost some of their clothes, and some lost all they had in the world. One lady had her trunk and everything she had, blown overboard and Jost. Almostall the cargo above deck was blown overboard, even barrels of flour. The bell, weighing 500 pounds, was blown a hundred and fifty feet from its place, but not broken. The stoves in the cabin were blown ashore, after the cabin and chimneys went to pieces. The steam and smoke instantly caused the alarm | of tire, which created the greatest excitement among ail; but those of the officers and crew who were not injured, prom g Epo mr every particle of fire on board, an en relieved those who were helpless and ‘confined by parts of the cabin lying on them. The groans of the injured soon brought others who were not, to their aid. Notwithstanding | the calamity was great, the scene no tongue can describe. The d danger was threatening, but not one of the officers or crew left the scene, or faltered from his duty. Every man stood to his post until either blown away, or the timbers knocked him down. But | have stil) a more painful seene to describe, | and that is thedestruction of the town. As I have but little knowledve of the size of the town, and arned up to 9 « selec bape you can understand better how to locate St. Vincent College, and the beautiful mansion of B. M. Horrell, are in ruins; the Convent is gone; the Catholic church, and al! thé bufidiogs ‘around it, are gone; the Methodjet church, and every build- gz frcm that to the bridge, are more or less in- jured; Mr. Giboney’s warehouse unroofed; the | ‘wooden bridge torn vp; Mr. Tompkins’ new brick house at the bridge literally a wreck; Messrs. Byrne & Sloan's new three story building, on the corner of Main Theme streets, unroofed en- tirely, and the zinc with which it was covered was thrown for some hundreds of yards. | Mr. Surreil’s three story houee, oe feet, the upper story a hall for the Sons of Tempe- rance, dedicated yesterday, now lies a shapeless mass of ruins. Capt. Surrell, wife and child, were in it when it fell, but were not killed, though badly the Lacy buildings, injured The Cassily warehouse, roofs off and walls shattered. Mr. Penny's new three story house, gable blown in, roof damaged, Some twenty more houses, names not recollected, injured—some barlly. rhe telegraph poles and wires are all blown down. The people are etill running about town, and some mothers, with children in their arme, ay be seen seeking places of shelter from the storm and rein.
