NEWS KY THE MAILS, Our Baltimore Correspondence. Bartimore, Dee. 5, 1850. Jenny Lond’s Quarters—Fireman's Reception— New Gas Works— Mare Disasters—Drowned— New Counterferts, Fe. The apartments prepared for Jenny Lind and suite, at Barnum’s Hotel, were yesterday thrown open to the gaze of the members of the press, who this morning describe even the texture of the wheets, and, other et ceteras of a lady’s chamber. ‘Twelve rooms, including 'hree pariors and a dining room, have been fitted up and appropriated to their exclusive use, in that part of the hotel fronting on St, Paul street, which is wholly occupied by the families of the worthy proprietors, Messrs. jum end McLaughlin. They are splendidly furnished, and supplied with all the requisites for genuine comfort. She is expected to arrive here in the ex- press train on Saturday evening, and gives her first concert on Monday evening. A committee of one, from each of our fire com- panies, has been appointed to proceed to Havre de Grace, to meet the Vigilant Fire Company,of Phila- delpnia, who will arrive here on next Monday week. The whole department of the city will also parade, to meet them on Broadway, and escort them to their quarters. The cheap gas movements at the North, have had the effect of stirring up our gas monopoly toa proper performance of their duties. They have accordingly commenced the erection of new gas weiks, on a late and improved plan, capable of sup- lying double the quantity now used in the city. Ihe excure they have heretofore given for not re- ducing their prices, hasbeen, that if they reduced them there would be more applicants for gas, and that they already bad more than they could supply. Quite a singular reason to be given in this age of improvement and progress. The ships North Carolina and F. W. Brune, left port yesterday, in tow of steemers, and were last night reported to be stuck fast in the mud, a few miles down the river. The weather continues so thick and bezy, that it has placed quite an embargo op our pert for some days past. A worthy old gentleman, named Wm. H. Bo- haran, of St Mary’s county, yesterday mornit fell overboard, from a schooner, and was drowned. He was a man of considerable wealth. A new counterfeit, on the Chesapeake Bank, of this city, has made its appearance in some of the western counties. They are altered notes, and can Ly easily detected, being very bunglingly exe- cuted. Our Philadelphia Correspondence. Puitapetrnia, Dec. 5, 1850. Attempt to Kul a Wife—Stolen Goods Discovered —The Opera--Jenny Lind, etc. An attempt at murder was made, yesterday morn- ing, in Moyamensing, by a man named Johnson, upon the person of his wife. He had, for some time previous, been separated from her, and yes- terday he went to the house where she was living, and demanded bis child. She refased, when he presented a pistol at her, and was just in the act of pulling the trigger, when a servant girl, who was watching the interview trom the heed of the stairway, leaped down, with one bound, and struck the weapon upon the floor, where it exploded harmlessly. he disappointed husband escaped before the alarm could be given. Anoted rookery for the disposal of stolen pro- perty, kept by a negro woman named Spires, hae of late been broken up, and a variety of articles, the produce of robberies within fe last year or two, have come to light. A silver fruit dish, stolen from Jobn Grent, Esq, mere than a year since, has been restored to the owner. The trial of this ‘woman will come on during the present term of the court, but it seems that the man to whom, it is evi- dent, she only played second fiddle, will escape the prosecution he merits. Old Drury is being renovated in anticipation of the eppreaching opera season, and the best seats are already taken for the first night, next Tuesday. Miss Lind was out this morning, and had several fire pictures taken by Root. She is now in better voice then at her last concert, when she was suffer- ing from her sere throat, but preferred to sing rather then disappoint the audience. Our Pennsylvania Correspondence. As we approach the session of 1851, very singular political movements begin to develope themselves. An organized opposition to the present State admin- istration is about to develope itself, with the Pre- sidency in prosy:ctive The policy of Governor Jobnston does not appear to give satisfaction to the ultra whigs and avti-masonic influence at the veut of government, and for the better display of their rancor, will shortly issue a new journal, to be denominated the State Jownal, pledged to be essentially and emp! Jobuston for his free soil opinions, having canvassed in person the State, and no doubt owing his election to those views so popular at that time, with the Buffalo plattorm in full view, on which #o many of our tall men jumped; or were ready to do #0, from the Kinderhook cabbage down to the ted on by the turning of the In further illustration of the policy of the alo ard to emeil fry, who are w screws. the apyin th the illustrious patriots am pure. hearted W big statermen who stand at the head of Our Nations! and State administrations, and all the isting ui bed men who grace the ranks of the whig party. Tur Great Sar—Tur Wortn’s Far, etc.— We are ve; Ms leern that an interview which the Central Committee on the London Exhibition had yesterday with the Secretary of the Navy, that officer informed the commitee that if Con- gress should see fit'to make an adequate appro- priation for fitting out the Pennsylvania for the purpose, he would cheerfully detail that magniti- cent anne the transportation of contributions,&c., to the World’s Exhibition, instead of store- ship Fredonia, which was some time since nated for the service, but has not returned from the Pacific. We should be proud, indeed, to see the grandest ship in our navy, and the grandest in the world we believe, itched on @ mission which will mark the spirit of the pre- sent century; aud we shuuld fect no less pride in having such an emblem of our national power exhibited in Europe. This great ship was built many yeers #go,at a cost of six or eight hun- dred thousand dollars, and has ever since been used at Norfolk merely as areceiving ship, without hav- ing ever rendered a day’s service at sea, or been seen out of our own waters. It would be a pity, and a reproach, too, if such a noble specimen of naval architecture and of national strength should have been built merely to be permitted to rot and eink in the mud, unseen and unknown to the world We venture to express the hope that the public spirited views of the Secretary of the Navy may be promptly seconded by Congress in the way sug- ested. .
