Whatever ad- vance takes place from this cause will probably be realized within the mext ten ortwenty days. Farmers’ Loan has beem rather quiet during the past day or two- ‘The large holders heye withdrawn from the market, for the purpore of seeing how much stock present prices will bring out from small holders. As soon as this point is settled, we may look for mots détivity iu the stogk. Canton Co. has not been much heard of lately, Holders appear to be content, and probably will not wake any offort to inflate prices. Portsmouth Dry Dock is becoming concentrated in the hands cf a few capi- taliste, who contemp!ate important and immediate im- provement in the property. Leng Island has probably been Iwid on the shelf for this sesson, The road is worth just about the debt of the company, and we see first fraction from thi jnvestment. It will take about 800.(00 dollars to put the road ia even ordinary con dition; which, added to the present debt, will make eggregate of eight hundred thousand dollars. Thi is every cent the entire property is worth, doubt if it could pay even the interest on thet without better management and au increase of net i come. Harlem has been more active within the past day or two, and s slight improve thas been reali. xed in prices. Stonington has been in better demand, at better prices. The net carnings of this company, for the year ending September 1st, 1850, was equal to bout five per cent upon its capital, but the manage- ment bave, for ressons best known te themselves, ap- prepriated the net revenue to the peyment of indebt- edness. Norwich and Worcester is, at present prices, apout the cheapest railroad stock on the list, and the margin for au improvement is probably as great as in anyother. Asan investment it pays well, and for a speculetive operation, the chanees for s rise are doubt- less as good in thie as in any other on the market. Railroad bonds are in demand at improving prises. Gov- erpment and State stocks have been more activalately, but prices have not be investments equally safi better, that hol of United States securities have had strong temptations placed before’ them, and we have no doubt many have made an exchange. A six percent stock at twelve, fifteen andtwenty per sont premium, does not compare very favorably with a seven per cent stock at par, that is of course when the rafety of the investment is left out of the question. It is our firm belief that there are upon this market, at the present moment, securities selling at or mear par, bearing seven per interest. which are as well secured, aud as far beyond any contingeney,as any public stock in existence. Capitalists will, one of these days, get their eyes open to this fact, and then the securities we refer to will be much sought after. The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer oi this port, to-day, amounted to $82504 44. Pay- ‘ments, $138,691 85.
