Yesterday was a day of mourning in Philadelphia; and even if municipal recommendations had not been issued, the masses could not have been in- different to the sad ceremonies which were then performing in the federal capital. At twelve @’clock the bellof the State [louse commenced sending forth its full and solemn sounds; and be- fore its echoes had died away, every church and fire bell in the city had taken up the sad, solemn, notes. In a few minutes at most, stores were closed, the windows of dwelling houses bowed, and a population of rly half a million gave out- ward menifestations, not of cok, and regulated grief for the loss of the chief magistrate of this great nation, but of that unmistakeable sorrow which canvot be called forth save for those that are near and dear to us. ‘The late edmuvistration might emphatically be @alled 2 Philadelphia administration, se far as the use of pewer and the tronage were concerned. Never have I reen the wheat and rye look better than it does this season. The oats crop will be short, in consequence of the drought through the month of June. The corn crop, alvo, is small, from the same cause, yet it very good color. Thev have had but one rain in this county since the first of June, it was so favorable before that time that the wheat and rye were not injored by the drought; in fact, the present dry weather is very favorable to the farmers, as it has ensbled them to save their bay, without injury from rain, yd has Also proved beneficial in maturing the grain, which is now ripe and reedy forthe syckle. In many ioces on the mountains, they are done cutting, but in the valleys it is more backward. I ¢ been through some eight or ten counties, and findthat the crops ef wkeat and rye in all of them, eo far ae I can see and hear, are abundant.
