Indeed, the idea is daily becoming tixed in the pub- lie mind, that the dayis not fur distant, that our people will send off most of their cotton, already manufactured, to foreign markets. We have pied | gradually led into all this by the pressing impor- tunines of eur Northern bretheren for lige protec- tive tarifls, The wheel is in motion, and they who started it cannot stop it. We are now paying hun- dreds of thousands to the North for mimchinery— this will last for a while, but not always. We will finally make it at home, and competent men, with the means, would do well to fo at it now. The day of high protective tariffs is passed, and passing away, but the agitation of the more fearful one is not—the subject of slavery. If the presses of the country, North and South, would take the bold, sensible, and independent course of the Herald on this subject, the agitation, the fanati- cism, would be allayed; but wofortunately for the \—unfortunately for North and South, mest of them are party presses, and many of them wholly dependent on party influences for the bread they eat. ‘They are unaware (or, if aware, heed it not that they are fanning the tlames ofa fire whic! will consume us—will consume thet wil engulf in one common ruin the government and people of this blessed country. They are (asa whole) a happy people; the burdens under which they are sap- posed to groan are imaginary—ills at a distance are more potent than those at hand; ‘the poor you have alway with you,” but the (supposed) poor ata distance have often the greater share of sympathy.
