MONEY MARKET, Sunpay, Juno 9—6 P.M During tho post week the stock market has beon sem paratively quict, Priees have varied but very lit- le, as will be seen by the table annexed, and we have. noticed none of that excitement among speculators that charseterized operations when prices were moving ‘¥p¥ard, From the appearance of things in the street, we rhould judge that it would be dificult to sustain prices long at present points, to say nothing about an Advance. biany of those lately engaged in the infla- | tion of the bubbie, ave cold out, and are now working | on the other side of the house. and we expect to hear | ail kinds of stories relative to the worthlessness of | faney stocks generally, and soveral railroad stocks | particulorly, from the yery men who have been so long engaged in puffing them up, and inflating prices. ‘This, however, is not unusual; we see these sudden changes almost every day in Wall street, and they do not surprise us, It only ehows that everything depends upon the position of the parties engaged— whether they are long or short, whether they wish to buy or sell; and outsiders sre no doubt frequently astouished st tho utter absence of cousistoncy in the movements of the managers of most of these companies. ‘The great abundance and cheapness of money tends more to sustain ‘the stock market than any value the different securities may poseens; for it must be admitted that every stock in the list is at this moment selling for much more than it is worth, for an investment, or for speculative purposes; and the ease with which all kinds of stock can be bypothecated, at a very Nmited margin, enables men of moderato means to carry @ great nomber of sbares, This prevents too great a supply pressing upon the market, and a small demand, therefore, keeps prices steady. Sinee the upward movementin the fancies commenced gihe bears have been very cautions, and heve not placed themselves in the power of the bulls, by selling largely short. Holders bave all the business among themselves. and will have to hunt up a new class of customers to take the stocks off their hands. So long as they ean, and aro willing to hold, there will be no important depreciation in prices; but the moment they ure compelled to sell, they will not be able to find purchasers to any extent, within tem per cent of present prices. ‘The annexed comparative table exhibits the quota- tions in this market for the principal speculative stocks for each day of the past week, and at tee elose of the weekfpreviows. It will be seem that pri- ees have throughout been quite uniform. Qvorarioxs ven Txs Princirat Steexs m rus Naw Yous Manxer, Tee. Wed. The. Prt. Bat. Free y Aas es. The amount intered for eonrum ption was excecdingly large for the season, and is felly erage received during the spring. Some time tince, in e reries of articles relative tothe eotten trade of Great Britain, we placed In « clear light the abuses practised in Liverpool by the leading eapitniists of that port, and the attempt made to de- press prices for the raw material, at the expense of the producers of this country. There articles created con- siderable excitement in Liverpool and Manchester. In making extracts from the Herald of April 20th, the “ Cireler to Bankers” of May 17th. says — «When wo made inst week some observations on the higher preeperity mannfseturing interest of the Youd Herold, of April 2) had not arrived in London. & gentleman who te th quatoted with the eon. as of the Kingiish. cotton ailed our attention to the coincidence o views on the sulject. In relation to the house referred to, we enn only may that wo were perfectly aware of their movements, but in naming others, we by no means wished It understood that they only were earrying for. word such operations, but ail who, in their cirealars from Liverpool at that period, wrote for effect here, that there had beon a great reduetion in working of the factories, and that there was a great plethora of goods at Manchester, and that our planters were rash- jog herdiong upcn certain ruin, by holding on to their cotton, were alluded to. We are perfectly satisfied with the course things have taken, if the Manchester spinners are ; and what fy more, we can tell the cotton lords of Liverpool that from this time heneeforth. con- dignmente of the raw material from thie side will be more beyond their control than they have been in years past. The false statements made by the Manchester manvfseturers and their organs, have failed in their object, we shall be particuiarly cautious about their reports for the future. ‘The annexed table exhibite the condition of the Jeading dc partments in eseh bank of this Btate, on the - trade, has 20th of Mareh, 1860, acoording to returns made te the less than twelve months after, and if the reports are | true, we have reesived at least fifteen millions of gold | | dust from California, making in these two iteme su ag- Com ptroller:— Banus oy vam Stara or Naw Youx, Manow 00, 1808, "aradm © 196,000 1, 087 15 ae 09 7, Fi 2, 808 we 141,028 Bre Mi oe fat 478,320 2,408, 129,403 374, ; tr sr ee Rational Bank ad j DP.
