M The excitememt of specalation continues in Wall street unabated. Every one is anxious to buy stocks and hardly stops to ask the price. Nothing Is easter than to purchase any of the fancies, and the higher Prices go, the less disposed holders are to sell. Speen- Jators who would not touch Erie at 60, buy at 89. MMar- Jem wae a drag at $0, but goes off like hot cakes at 60. Bo goes the market, and now that the steam is up, we fare prepared for anything. Nothing will now astonish nain Wall street; rpeculators are etark, staring mad, and are capable of performing the most ridien)ous acta. we have before remarked, it is the easiest thing in ‘the world to buy stocks; every one f# buying, it mat- fers very little what the price is, Mamy think any of the fancies are cheap at double the prise now current, and they therefore go it blind. When everyone ie as saxtour to cell as they now are to buy, what will bethe Fesult? This ie a question we would advise every out- der to ask himself oecasionally. The time is coming when the tables will be turned; when all will be sellers, imetead of buyers; when every one will be trying to get out first, and in the rash many poor devils will be erushed to death. All is sunshine now. Bverything appears prosperous and bright. those who are in- volved in the whirlwind of speentation little dream of the change that is about coming over the face of things It is #0 easy to borrow mon 7 of the banks, on any kind of security, good, bad or indifferent, at a very smell margin, that an operator, with limited m: can cerry large quantitios of fancy «toeks. The banks ‘will almost Jend money on the security of an old hat fo fond ar this slate of Things tarts, epssulation mast progress; but as this evil invariably works its own eure, the process 1* going on below the surface, and must ere long develope iteelt. ‘The market opened baoyant this morning. Contracts have been proposed, and the veh will voon be placed in the hands of Inborers, Phe completion of this road fe +e very important, that we hope funds will be at once fertheoming, from some greece, te invure » eperdy opening of the trough Toute. The ¢entral line of western roads is interested in the river road, and we have no doubt that by the efforts of these companies, either in their eorporate capacity, or by the private subseriptions of stockholders, the necessary amount of money will be raised. It would be full as much to the eredit of Albany, to subscribe liberally to the Hudson River Road, as it was in loaning her bonds to the Western Massachusetts Road Company—as she is as deoply interested as any along the line, or at the southern terminus. The Legislature of this State, during the last session, passed a law au- thorizing cities, towns and villages to subscribe to the Hudson River Ruilroad, and we have been anxiously looking for some action on the part of the numerous towns and eities, in earrying out the provisions ot this act. We find this method of filling up the capital stock of railroad companies practised all over the coun- try, and we have not seen but one instance where the voters in any village, town, or city, refused to give the required consent. The Hudson River Railroad is so situated that its sompletion is actually necessary to place the central line ¢f roads through this State on a proper footing, to carry on the war that will soon be waged so violently between railroad lines generally. Competition will, in | a few years, rage #0 furiously in all parts of the coun- try where railroads exist, that every facility will_be required to carry on, with any prospect of success, all {the roads running east, west and north from Albany, Every town, city and village along the line of there roads, are interested in the Hudson River road, and it would require but very moderate effort on the part of each of these roads, to place the result beyond a doubt. The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer | of this port, to-day, amounted to $115,637 15; pay- ments, $66,937 40, Balance, $4,845 589 72. ‘The Legislature of the State of New Jersey, having investigated the affairs of the Farmers’ and Mechanics’ Bank of New Jersey, and found the institution sound | and solvent, have restored its corporate rights and pri- vileges, and it has recommenced banking business, with | a renewed capital of $50,000. John Van Dyke, Presi- dent, and W. F. Webb, cashier. The notes ot the old bank are now redeemed in specie, at the counter of the new bank, and all above the denomination of fivos, at the Ocean Bank, in this city. | ‘The accounts trom the South are very gloomy In re- | gard to the new crop of cotton. ‘The whole valley of | the Yazoo is, we learn, completely under water, and the destruction of plantations enormous. It is stated that the usual production of cotton on the district covered by the flood, has been about 200,000 bales. The | growing crops bave been almost entirely destroyed, | and the loss nust be immense. The crop now coming to market continues to tall off largely. Tho deficiency | already amounts to more than six hundred thousand | bales. Averaging the number of bales taken by each | ship at 2,000, and it would require 300 ships to take it | to market, This calculation shows the heavy loss sus- tained by the single interest of shipping. The freight ‘on 600,000 bales, at $5 per bale, the usual price, with | an average crop, would amount to $3,000,000. The in- creased price, in part, compensates the planter, but | for the ship owner there is no help. The rule in his ease operates the other way; as the quantity increases, the price of freights goes up—but it goes down with an | equal certainty on a reduced crop. The price of cotton | never affects freights; they are regulated, like every. | thing else, by the demand and supply; but the price of freights often affects that of cotton. It is estimated in England, that the life of a locomo- tive is one hundred and fifty thousand miles. If tho value of an engine is $10,000, it follows that ry mile it runs costs 6; cents. The following institutions have just declared divi- dends of the amounts named, for the last six months: —Doylestown Bank, 3 per cent; Farmers’ Bank of Bucks County, 3; Easton Bank, 5; Lancaster County Bauk, 4; Lancaster Bank, 6; Farmers’ Bank of Lancas- | ter, 5; Doylestown Insurance Company, 3; Doylestown ! and Danborough Turnpike Company, 4. The Legirlature of Rhode Island, at tts last session, granted five new bank charters, vis.: one in Provi- dence, one in Phenix village, one in Coventry, one in | Richmond, and one in Hopkinton. The first is to start | with » capital of $100,000, the others with capitals of $50,000, and all with liberty to increase, They are to | pays bonus to the State, of one anda half percent | upon their original capitals, and of two per cent upon any increase. Great eare is sald to have been taken to guard the public against fraud, but in the present state of business and prices of money, it would be as well to | protect the stockholders—if they should hare say— against loss and fra The annexed statement, compiled from the official annual report made to the Legislature of Massachu- sottejexhibite;the aggregate operations of the raliroads of that State, during the past year—1849--and the to- talcost at the close, Raitroans or Massactr Length of main roads. 1,025 ‘miles Length of branches. ul « Length of double trac! 373 COs. eee ee 961,901,126 Prom From From mail Total Receipts... +» $6,118,214 Road Bed......
