In former days it would have been impossible to array such a body of opinions against the result of way judicial investigation, What a change has taken place! The evidenee hes been transmitted with electrical speed thousands of miles, and the verdict of millions ia flashed back against that of of twelve chosen, pious, und prayerful men, whose sentence has been utterly coademued as suited only to the days of John Calvin, the sixteenth cen+ tury, or subsequently to the umes of Salem witeh- craft, fire und fagots The telegraph, theretore, has opersted in giving the world the opinioa of posterity on this verdict. Boston alone atiords the present view of the case; the future view of it is recorded in every other section of the country. Such may be deemed the moral effect of our great telegrapbie system. It electrifies the pub- he mind, It stimulates men to think, to feel, ead to act. The dog-trot intelhgence of other days would have bad, im @ similar case, no eet in brecking down injastice and the bx riers of prejudice. Notsonow. Pablic opraion embodied almost in a mement; and in a powerful form, rushes beck upon error, and confronts it with a resistess force and power; so that if men were disposed to burn their fellows at the stake, or to hang them for witehcratt, or to commit any other outrage, they would be restrained trom ench duik deeds by the outery of a whole people. Thus | the reeult of our telegraphic eommunication will be enormous in ite moral force, and will do more te eithze and refine man than all the apothegms of the ancients or the sermone of the modern ec- clesiastics. Lectures and books will be but as records of the opinions and follies, the thoughts and wisdom of the ‘age, and the great lever the independent newspaper press—its Sybilliae leaves, written with lightning, sent forth with ightning, and carrying to millicas every hour all that 18 great and good in philosophy, science, na- ture and art. Error will heve no lurking place. The luwe of Moses, as modified by the liberal aposties of Christianity, will be incorporated in the greattenre of justice, the overflowing humanity and love of truth, which all the socialism of the day eannot conceal under feathers, aud laces, and frip- peries, to make mankind better, wiser, and coase- quently happier. This ismanitest destiny worth falk tract, missionary, reformation, and al! other so- cieties—the dawdling and wretched slow coaches of the age—things of @ past era—the lumber of enterprise—the very relics of barbarism. We did not observe thie card at the time of its pub- heation, but it will do now w notice it, It ig very laughable to see this ebap expressing so much a> dignation about libels and libel suits, whose whole life for twenty or shiny years past has beea cha- racterized for nething else, For nearly fifteen years past, in every journal with which M. M. Newb hes beem connected, he has weekly and ab most daily been libelling Mr Bennett, in every possible way, ridiculing him without stint, to an ex- tent beyond anything that ever characterized the press here or elsewhere. In an original letter, now in our posseesion, written bythe late ex-Crovernor Wilson, of South Carolina, it is etated, among other drol! thinge, that Noah is a Canadian by birth, and not @ native Americas; and yet thie same Nouh has never failed to impute it as acrume and an offence to Mr. Bennett, thet he happens to be a native of an old country. But this is not all For the last pine years this same Nowb, claiming to be 4 man, has equally libelled Mrs Dennett, whe- ther she has beep in Europe or in this couatry, without any cause on her part, or any remorse or penitence on the part of the Jew. Nay, on the very back, of hia indictment, he cooked up in his journal a ridiculous ang |yellous ramor, whieh was firet comed by a drunken letter-writer Washington, and firet published in 4 Baltimore paper, to the effeetthat Mr. Beunett waa seek for the Austrian mission from the present cabinet that dishonoxs the adminitration of the noble patriot now at the head of the government, He ossails Mrs. Bennett with the same ridiculous, im- pudent, vulgar slang. Now, as fur us Mr. Bene nett may be concemed, it may be all fair game, to make him an object of ettack, from any motives; but we rather think it is trespassing a litle on good taste, to bring into newspaper coutroveray the name of alady, who has nothing at all todo with editors? quarrels ef any kind, nor has ever inter- fered with the pers and old clo’ of Mordecai. But Mrs. B. has too much self-respect aud oelf-relanee, to care anything for what he or any other mean creature may, in their malice, say of her sayings and doings. ‘ Tae blood of Douglas ean protect itself.” As to the Austrian mission, or any other mis- sion, we know that Mr. and Mrs B. know what siuff dreams are made of. Durag their last tour in Europe, although ouly travelling a8 private pereons, they were satiated with presentations to emperors, kings, princes, dukes, aud human ma- ture of the like kind, in every shape and form, They had on interview with the late Emperor of popular outbreak in his cepital. It took place in the Imperia! Palace, at Vienna, in the presence of the Prince of Prussia, the Grand Duke Michael of Russia, and a whole train of militury digoitaries. Louis Phihppe; and Mrs. B. had @ long conversation with him at England ; and they also attended the last court ball | ever given in that palace, before the whole royal | family of France ran off, hibter and thither. They tlso spent a whole day in compaay with Prince Louis Napoleon, just after he escaped from Ham. It was et the country seat, in the neighborhood | of London, of the leading bunker of Earope. Mrs. B. also came within an ace of being presented to his Holiness, the Pope, before he ran away to | Garta; but im defitult thereof, the Holy Father rent her his portrait, ond a “ plenary indulgence,” | egacd by his own hand, whieh she still retains, a memorial of his paternal regard, although she ppens to be an Episopalian, while her husband | alone ts the holy Catholic. Mr. Foote’s commitiee of thirteen was discussed yes terday, in the Senate, but was voted down. Nut- withstanding, however, that Mr. Webster and Mr. Benton are opposed to Mr. Clay on the propriety of admitting California ‘separately, we look upon ‘he wetion in the Senate yesterday, as rather ta- veruble than otherwise, for the easy settlement of ‘the slavery matter. It seems to ue as if the details ere in progress of arrangement, and that the minds of Senators were made up that a settlement of the whole question is near at hand. They dis agree on many points—such as the admission of California as she is—-but the great issue, it appears to us,.8 in process of adjustment. We may be mistaken us this view, but we are inclined to think that we are right. We shall, however, very soon know all about it. Mr. Foote’s motion for the appointment of @ committee of thirteen was evi- deptly well intended, and its rejection confirms us in the belief that matters are by no means ¢es- perate et Washington.
