Advertisements and news compel us to doibie. Advertisers will please sond in their poticers sly as possible. Such on opportunity for thr busin jommunity to epread thelr advertise: ments before the public, seldom occurs, Whe Knd of the Webster Trial in Boston— Conviction of the Pri.oner, ur readers will find in to-day’s Herald the whole of the proceedings on the Webster trial, to the ad- journment of the Court yeeterday—the last day of that extraordinary case—together with the verdict of guilty, as rendered by the jury. The defendant, N uppeare, made a speech in his defence, a thing almost without precedent in the annals of crim- imal tals. It us rarely, indeed, that a man on tnal for such a hemous charge as that alleged against Professor Webster, hes had the nerve or fortitude to speak m his own defence, afier having employed counsel, We hardly know what to think of at. To those who copsider him guiltless, it will confirm them in the opinion that he is innocent of the erime for which he bas been tried, while oa the other h and, those who trom perusing the testimony have made wp their minds that he is guilty, will, ia his address 0 the jury, perhaps, be confirmed in their opinion. Such wiil be the judgment of the public on the matter. It may be the derperation of innocence, or the desperation of guilt, that has induced Professor Webster to take this «tep; but waless he was posi- fave of his innocence, we certainly think that ua- der the circumstanees, his addressing the jury was vather injudicious. In fact, we should think so muder any cireumetences. At five minutes after 8 o'clock in the evening he yory retired, and at 11 o'clock came into court with a verdict of guilty. ne Sunday Matis and the Sunday Fanatics. We perceive that an effort 1s being made by eertain religiovs fanatics in the State of New Jersey, to abolish the Southern mail whieh leaves New York every Sunday morning, and that a cor- reepordendence on the subject has been entered yoo between Mr. Brady, the Postmaster of this eity, end the President of the New Jersey Railroad | Company. A similar attempt to stop the mails oa | Sanday, and on thet route in particular, was made a few years since ; but it created a storm of indig- nation and opposition which overcame the fanatic: end from that time, until very reeently, they have Jet the matter elone. It appears, however, that they have recovered from the defeat which they then sustained, and have renewed the agitation, to be agein defeated, we hope, in the same manner as they were before. Ove of the grounds assumed by the fanaties, in | their efforts to abolish this mail, is the alleged fact, that the Sanday Southern mail is of no great consequence to the country, and might, without prejudice to the community, be done away with. ‘This ie not the ease. The Southern mail is at all ‘umes important to the Southern Stater, and espe- erally to the commercial intere | | | | quiet, and let the merehants of the Southern cities apswer for thems@ves. Old Nick 26 a pretty shrewd old fellow, and he eannot be cheated in thet way, meither wif soft eoap have any effect wea for his hide 18 too tough to feel ite u- juenee. Let the abolition ef the Sunday Southem mail be coneeded, and before six months have elapeed these same fanatics will undertake to dictate tothe community that the blue laws of New England shall be revived—that after a week’s hard work, the poor mechanic shall not take his wife and chil- dren to Hoboken, or any other place, to get a moutbfal of tresh air—that no one shull go beyond his bouse on Sunday except to church, tor the pur- pose of hearing a sermon—that we should, 1n fine, become greater hypocrites than we are, as far as real, genuine, unadulterated religion 18 concerned. ‘This is only Northern fanaticism, which 1s break- ing out here in another shape; and if it be allowed to get a foothold among us, in a few years the great mass of the public will become mere serfs—mere machines, subject to the will of a few fanatics, who flatter themselves that by stopping the Sunday mails, and going to chureh mechanically three times on the Sabbath, they sponge off all old sins, and have perfect leense to go on and cheat their fellow men on week days with impunity. Invasion or Cuna—Teieoraruinae Exrraorpt- wary.—A Wail street journal, called the Bzpress, during the last week, has astonished its readers by fome immense telegraphic intelligence. It com, menced with rumors in regard to the invasion of Cuba ; then it found an expedition all ready at St. Domingo, then at St. Thomas, next at Chagres, and last at Warhington. Indeed, it seems the expedition as quite ubiquitous, and eome little trouble hasgiven us the telegraphic news on this eubject for the £x- press of next week, as follows: Qa Monday it will be sound dodging about Casco Bay, or possibly at the valiant town of Hull, in Magsachusetts. Oa Tues- day, the armed marauders will be found at New- port, some of them quartered in the deserted rest- dences of the fashionable people of that region. On Wednesday Coney Island will be beseiged, and the sandy sheres of that domatn will be swarming with the anxious inveders, who will supply them- selves with an ample store of clams, for bait, soup, and other purposes. It will be found, oa Thursday, that the whole armament wall be grounded on the bar below Philadelphia ; and ow Friday we shall hear of them in the vicinity of along, low, black schooner, lying off Baltimore. These important movements, however, may be expected to take a more settled form when the entire combined forces, on Saturday, are discovered looming through the fog off Cape Lookout ; after which the Cubans muy prepare foran onslaught, which will wake up allthe readers of the Express about as decidedly as do the Washington letters and editorials of that remarkably expressive journal. Tne Hungarian Rervores—Goverxor Usma- zi's SratemEnt.— We publish elsewhere, the state- ment addressed by the ex-Goveruor of Comorn to the Hungarian refugees who accompanied him to this country from the recent battle-fields of Hua- gary. The picture which he has given of this ua- fortunate people is graphic as well as pathetic. We understand his Excellency left tor Washiag- ton yesterday, to which city he goes for the purpose of pressing the importance of Congress granting, as soon as possible, some portion of the public yands out West. If Congress could, from feelings of intense humanity, overlook for one day 3 squabbles and controversies, and pass upoa the great and humane project already before them, we beheve it would be a great item in its praise, both here and hereafter. The poor refugees cannot re- | main here long in a condition of intense suspense. Something ovght to be done very soon by Con- grcee, or they will have to move out Weet them- selves, and take their chance among the squatters in those regions. Whuile we would draw the attention of Congress to this matter, we cannot help expressing our deep sympathy for many other refugees, now ia an equally unfortunate condition, from other parts of Europe—from Sicily, Itely, and various parts of Germany. We think it would be an object wor- thy of the attention of public humanity, to devise | some mode of extending aid to the other Ea- ropean refugees among us, if not even to the desti- tute American volunteers, who are equally in want | of it. What has become of the large amount sub- seribed for the benefit of Ireland? Can no one tell what use has been made of that hberal and generous donation by the American people 1 Tux Mysterious Devecorements —One or two | of the morning papers have mentioned that strange developements would soon be made respecting some individuals who were practicing extortioas on some respectable citizens, from whem thou- sunds of dollars have been paid as hush money. fied, on consulting with the magis- f of police, that no legal steps have been taken to bring the guilty parties to answer the charge. Again, as a general thing, when the British eteamehipe arrive at Boston, their mails are frequently reecived here on Saturday, after— im almost all cases—the regular Southera mail has closed from the post office in New York. The early reeeipt, by merchants, their private cor. respondence from the other side of the Atlantic, is | great desidera la fact, we believe that, as | general rule, no merchant, or operator, or epeca- Bator, ae the case may be, will uadertake any ven- tare until he hae received his private dispatches; at lrart, he wi'l not do eo to any great ext Now, if, on the one hand, the eteamship arrives ‘this port on Set or at Boston at a time when her mails cannot be received here before Sutarday afternoon, after the closing of the regular Southern mail, would it not be a great injustice to | that influential and important class of the com- munity to deprive them of the privilege whieh they | now enjoy, of receiving their foreign corres: | pondenee by the earliest means porsiblet We eprak of the Southera merchants, who are certain. | ty as much interested as thore of the North in the | character of the intelligence which those siexm- ehipe bring? Decidedly they are; and, we would ask, are the interests of onr Southern merchants between New York and New Orleans to be in- sared because a few fanatics in this region, who eare nothing about the foreiga markets, imagine, im the pleniade of their aseumed godliness, that a Rocomotive commits sin by running on the Sab- baht But this ie not the only objection that we have to the propored reform, if euch it may be ealled. If those very conscientious and Sabbath-revering fanatics succeed in their efforte to stop the Sunday mail from this city to the South, they will not be rativfied with that; bot when that 1s accomplished, they will want something more. Not believing in the system of remission of sins, or indnigence for committing them, they cetablish one of their own, and flatier themee!vee—or at at least a great many of them do—that if they do bat, im the name of ro. hgion, exert themselves to stop the Sanday mails, the very odor of the good act will act a# a panera to their wounded consciences for the many dis- honest tricke and knaveries which they practis+ daring the week. This eystem of eompounding felomes with the devil will not do. If those people whore conreienees are eo extremely sensitive, can- not find any better way of justifying themselves for the mine of the week, than by attempting to stop the Sunday mails, they had better remaia | newspaper publicity. the reporter who wrote the paragraphs has evi- dently been the dupe of the atill designing extor- tionists, for the very purpose of further obtaining money, in the hope of hushing up the affair from In either case, if the myste- nous developements have no foundation, it 1s wrong to make euch statements; and if they do exist, and the parties ere known, then itis the duty of every good and honest citizen to bring the ac- cused parties before the public authorities. Extexsion oy THe Exim Rat.noan To Honoxen. | —We eee it stated, 1m eome quarters, that an act has been pereed by both houses of the Legislature of this State, by which a braach of the Erie Rail- road, ronning from Hoboken np the Jersey side of State of New York, is anthorized. Mach op- jon hy of course, been made to this extension, it may do to the epeculative projects which were started opposite Piermont, on this side of the river; but asa measure of general interests | beneficial to this metropolis, and the country gene tally, we doubt whether the extension of the Erie Railroad to Hoboken or Jersey City, is not the moet beneficial measure that could be adopted by the New York Legislature. It will, no doubt, im- prove the opposite shores of the river, stimulate the building of houses, and increase the value of property; and all those accessions to the eubarbs of New York ultimately tend to benefit this city, more orlees, in epite of all that may be said to the contrery.
