Indian Warin Yucatan. * [From the Boston Traveller, Feb. 22 | Though much hes been said, yet little is definitely known of the actual state of affaires in Yuostan, siuce the commencement of the war of races in that country. A recent conversation with Lieut. Ciement, a returned volunteer in the Yucatan service, with which he has Deen arsociated for some two years, has turnished us with s variety of interesting details, which mey ald our readers to get Coyne or 2 oe actualstate ofthings, in Yucal the Yucatan government at p: the field, is about 17.000, who are eontiaually skirm: fighting with their uncivilized enemies. with searcely any food to sustain themselves, beloz, in most cases, obliged to hi for corn about the country. ive- ry white inhabitant is by law obliged to be a soldier, or the subsistence of one, 8. notwithstanding their late reverses, still occupy more than half of the country, aud much the best part of it; and unless the whites are substantially assisted by Mexico, they will be unable to hold but a email portion of the peninsula, however many batties Seaway gain over the Indians in the open fieid, Mexi- co has, aa yet, sent her only two hundred troops, com- manded by General Torreno; but some five hundred more were daily expected, at last accounts. Bacalar, the chiet fortified town of the seat of hostili- tes. isat present commanded by General Zetina, and is well prepared to resist ny riege. It was captured from the Indians on the 2d of Juty, 1849, by # foros of 800 men, consisting in part of American yoluateers, at the expense of many lives, ia consequence of the large number of Indansin the towa. (some three or four thousand.) though the majority of tuem were unarmed. Shortly after the taking of Bacalar,a Yucateso ofser was capt who had deserted to the Indians. He was pardoned, ordered iuto service again, and was de- spatcbed with a party of men to reconcitre the soa- coast. Instead of that. however, he proceeded to an Tagish villa of the inhel near Belize, Honduras, murdered some tants, and plundered the place. The | English governor of Belize immediately semt word to the commander st Bacalar of this affatr, who caused the offender, named Pacheco, to be sent for by a large force. and he was hot on bis arrival, in presence of the Epglish messenger. It is feared that this action will caure bad reeults, The scldiers at Bacalar are obliged to scout the country for corn to support themselves. There ts also theres company of American voluateers which was formerly under the command of Captain Robert J. Kel- ley, of New Orleans, who died on the 2d of July last, of 9 wound in the head, received at the sieg» of the town. ‘The company is now under the command ef ween Vhen it entered Yucatan, it was 90 strong, but now numbers = about 40. ‘The volunteer regiment of Americans numbered, when it entered Yuceten, about 700 men. Their first battle was op the 26th of December, 1348, ander the command of Col, White, on the Culampich road, about half a mile from Tehosueo, the head quar- ters of the regiment. In this battle the (ndiens num- bered about three thousand, many of them, however, being but poorly armed. Their manner of fighting much resembles that of the Mexicans.
