The quantity of lumber which has been shipped from Boston to California, during the last four months, exceeds ten millions of feet; of shiag! be- tw seven and eight millions; and a considerable quantity of house and store frames, laths, joist, clap- boards, Ke. We learn that the Legislature of Tennessee, before adjournment, passed a bill authorising the Treasurer to sell the stock in the Flenters’ and Union Banke, owned by the State, and with the proceeds to purchase ‘Tennessee five per cent bonds. A most remarkable fact, and one that deserves we | think, more serious consideration than it obtains, is the surprising indifference and apathy with which many occurrences are received by our people in gene- ral, that to us seem to be fraught with the most disas- trous consequen: A most striking instance of this is shown in the recent legislative action with regard to the Reading Railroad. The whole anaals of repudie- tion do not exhibit an example of more wholesale and | RAP mm pal iniquitous shirking of responsibility, or a more reck- Jess abandonment of all good faith, than is here to be | seen; and yet, with the exception of a few speculators in the stock and bonds of the company, no one appears to have been conscious of what has happened, or to have Deen startled by the necessary aud far-reaching conse- | quences. The whole matter has passed before the eyes of the community without apparently exciting a single feeling of disapprobation, or the expression of the slightest apprehension of the fatal effects that must accrue tothe fair fame of the Americans asa people, | and the renewed confidence in their good faith which | | for the last year or two has been slowly growing up. Al large amount of the seourities of this concera are held | im England, and we can hardly estimate too seriously | the effect that must be produced there by the passage | through one of our legislative bodies, of @ bill avtho- | tizing such reckless trifling with the obligation of con- tracts. This company borrowed money upon their | bonds, and pledged their faith to pay them at their | maturity in 1850. When this period arrives, the bomd- | holders are coolly told that they must take new bonds, payable in twenty years, and when they ehow the least | restivemess under such treatment, and a disposition to | urge theis rights at law, the legislature of the State is aled to—the company obtains at once the passage of an act which takes from its ore titors all redress, ‘We way rest assured that such acts, coupled with the | late similar transactions of the Dry Dock Company, | the North American Trust Company, the Morris Canal | Company, and others, must tell against us, aad their occurrence cannot be too much deplored. “ Might does net make right,” and though men appear to for- get the wisdom of many of their school-dey sayings, still it always was, and always will be, true, that “cheat. | ing play never prospers.”’ In another part of to-day’s paper will be found | the offieial report of the Auditor and Comptroller | of Texas, relative to the debt of that State, which | has been transmitted to the Legislature, by the Gover- nor. The report exhibits that there is a very large | amount of eutstanding abilities, not presented for | andit, belonging to the first class, and provided for | under the laws of the late republic of Texas. There is also » considerable amount of unexamined second | class claims on file, which have not bven acted upon, | y but which are just and bona fide, having been con- tracted under the sanction of law. The Governor re- | commends that proper laws be passed to enable the Board of Auditors to receive and audit the liabilities of the third class,as among that clase of claims are | many of the most meritorious character and, it is but | just that they should be placed om an equal footing | ‘with those embraced by previous laws. It is also sug- | gested that the session of the Board of Auditors be ex- | — tended and continued to such time as may be actealiy | required to adjust the business for which it we] created.
