There was considerable activity in the stock market to-day, and e slight improvement in quotations for se- veral of the fancies, Prices were stiffened by the ap- pearance of some of the leading bears in the market as purebarers; but as they are buyers merely for delivery on matured contracts, the favorable effect on prices is \kely to be only temporary. The company have not hesitated to give extl- mates of income au: enditures two or three years shbead, but refuses to give what it must know ail about, vis., the running expenses for 1849. However, we shall get hold of the whole through the report made to the Legtlature, and therefore must wait paticatly for that. If the estimates made in this address do not prove more correct than those made in the last, those who place any confidence in them will be most wofully deceived There is @ want of honesty and fairness in the statements of thie company, illus trated by a suppression of the rumsing expenses of the road during the past year, that throws @ doabt distrust over all their reports, and tends to increase the financial embarvasements of the concern The gross earnings of the Erie Company for the month of January, 1850, amount to $112.956 25; the same month in 1949, $39,340 98.
