Hungary cannot live as she now 1s. She must have a change. The Hunganan patriots still in Europe, we fear, will have no recourse left them but emigration to ths country. When Count Ujhaz: and his companions turned their backs, for the last time, on their native hills, they hoped to find, in this far off land, an asylum, and they have not been disappointed. They have sent to their suffering brethren an account of their recep» tion in this free land; and although our chief Se- cretary of State has looked with the calmest com- plecency on the full of their country, these letters will stir the heart of the Hungarian nauon, and, be- fore twelve months are passed, we may look for an immense emigration from that unfortunate country. Let them come. There is room enough, thank God, on this broad contment, tor all the exiles of Hungary and Europe; and, despite Mr. Clayton, we doubt not these exiles will find a generous wel- come from our peeple and from Congress. One of the first resolutions proposed in Congress, now T that the long expected message is received, should be, that a generous tract of the public domain be gretultously appropriated for an Hungarian colony, whither all the exiles and fugitives of thet ill-fated nation may fly, and where they may find a home. We doubt not that within ten years a colony of Hungarians might thus be formed, which would soon become one of the most efficient and useful States of the Umon. Let (if narrow minded peo- | ple cavil atthe gratuity) a law be passed, allow- ing settlers to pay the $125 per acre, within five years from the time of settlement, for their lands. By some such act we may atone, in part, for the cold and cruel neglect of the government to en- cour the Hungarians in the hour of peril and of need; and the moral effect of such a public act would be en unanswerable argument im favor of republics, and Europe would respond to the move- ceived by the steamship Empire Wity, are of cousidera- ble importance, Our correspondence and translations, which are annexed, will be read with the greatest in- terest. OUR CENTRAL AMERICAN CORRESPONDENCE, Lron De Nicanacua, Nov. 6, 1849, State of Affairs in Centyal America —The egressions of the English—The Excitement Among the People Pre paration to Resist European Interference, $c. Since I wrote you last month, there have been some startling developements of British policy in Central America, to which the New York Heralé cannot too strongly direct the attention of the Amerioan people All the facts which I relate to you come from the bust source, and youcan, in the greatest security, rely upon their truth, On the 28th of September last, a treaty was concluded with Honduras, by which that State conceded to the United States certain important rights in commerce; and also te our lines of steamers, and to the prospective ship canal, certain important privileges in the magui- ficent bay of Fonseca, the rival of San Franciseo, It also ceded to the United States, temporarily and for important purposes, the ieland of Tigre, commanding that bay. A circular was at once issued to that effect, to all the foreign diplomatic agents, ke.,in the coun- try. But look at the other side ! On the 16th of October, H. B. M.'s Charge d’ Affaires, Mr. Chatfield, appeared in the bay, on board the steam frigate Gorgon, and proceeded to take possession of the Isle of Tigre, “in the name of the Queen,” as related in a letter from the cemmandant of the Island to hiv General. I send youa copy of this letter, as well ae that of the commander of the Gorgon, upon the subject. You will &nd, alse, the copy of the reply of the govern ment of Honduras, to the official letter of Mr, Chat 7 announcing the secersion. Upon accomplishing this, Mr. Chatfield proceeded toappoint a “ Superintendent,’ anda jist of regule- lations was promulgated, one of which requires that all Persons owning, property in the Island, must retarn and occupy it within eight days, on pain of forfeiture. But this is not all. Possession has been taken of the other islands of the bay belonging to Honduras and San Salvador, andin the same mauner. Some of these are very large and important, And we have, to- #19 present cireumstances, solemuly dvolares you seem toattaeh no value to the letter of this go- yernment, of the 16th of April, in which you are tr vised of the actual appointment of such commissioners on the part of Honduras; which letter was sent to you by your own courler ‘On the 6th instant, was remitted to you at Guate- Warn's Isuanp.—In the bay Refuge, on Ward's mala, an authentic copy of the decree issued by this | Island, th {8 persons, on the 224 instanty und cveruments to the effect that the ieland Lot igre had care of the Coumistioners of Emigration, eanuee vu cided tothe United States, in virt concluded with its Minister in Central Fie peste ptember lest, of which decree | transmit you a uplical ‘The government of Honduras wi dure all the in- juries which your government may choose to inflict upon it under the sole ‘ight. of force; but Honduras will never surreader to Great Britain an: ts im its ferxitennite for it is now clear that the demands erm, countrymen are simply the pretexts for ocou- Deavn 1s sue Hosritsr.—Henry Beldon; the firraan be mist witht the aooilent mo amputated then, longing 9 woart boat Swit oard ‘that vessel, and died yesterday morn! i tiie ne bist T FROM Pinxanms.—A Ind, Te yeane ola. raiding at ae Mul aD) itm: Ing the island of Tigre and the port of Truxillo. | the barrel d shatte: his he hand ina ‘The goverument of Honduras conthes iteelt, then, to | dreadful manner. she = the received for insertion the renewal of its protest of January 8, Wrose Bu. yimase em of who states that he has firm belief that the or that some strot liberal pation, foreseeing the ely bewildered ‘am among the city authorities, fatal teadencien of these violations of the most eacred nding him torthe uiher. but none of chera “admitting prtectpies of international rights, which are now so open- Ch aE tak whose aS practiced by Great Britain, will take under its pro- 3 are are et 6 lows to tection the feeble republic of Honduras.
