The Circuit Court of this District was sitting ia chaneery during the last fortnight, and disposed of many chancery cases. This morning was fixed for hearing four demurrers to the bill of the heirs of Gen. Thaddeus Kosciusko, praying discovery, account and relief from and against Jonathan B. H. Smith, administrator of the personal es Col. Bomtord, who was, in his lifetime, elaiaes trator of Kosciusko’s estate, and ape from and egaimst the sureties to the probate bonds of Col. The Ilon. Reverdy Joh e Hon. Reverdy Johnson, Attorney Gens Sew Work and Major G. Tochman, member of the bar, appeared for the heirs of Kosciusko, The ease was postponed, with their convent, tll Saturday next, it having appeared that Richard §S. Coxe, one of the counsel of the denturrants, has been absent from Washington, with the leave of the court. Messrs. Marbury and Redin are associated with Mr. Coxe, as counsel of the demurrants. The case is of some interest, as the heirs of Kosciusko nave litigated it since 1823 ; it was under the managemeat of many other counsel, and it involves many questions relating te our own and international laws. Oor Philadeiphia Correspondence. Puraverruia, Oct. 26, 1849. Rumored Resignation of Gov. Johnston—Where as he going to?—Hon. George Darsie—Coal Shp- ments—The Fuir—Another Splendid Packet Ship —Death of Mr. Potter. ‘The rumor gethers ttrength eveiy day that his Excellency Governor Johnston, is about to resign the cares of government, and his $3,500 per an- num, not like the Emperor Charles, to go into a state of monastic seclusion, there to bewail the madness und misfortunes of the great whig party, but to be inducted into an office of greater profit, under the federal administration. In the same breath, rumor assigas him a full foreign mission, and the post of Seeretary of the Treasury, which 1s to be made vacant for him by the translation of Mr. Meredith to the saows of Russia. Governor Johnston may resign, and General Taylor may ap- point him to some office in his gift; but I venture to predict that it will neither be a foreiga mission nor a cabinet appomtment, for the good and suffi- cient reason that he lacks the necessary qualifica. tions. The Governor is a fine-looking, jovial fel- low—democratic in his feelings and associations— an excellent judge of Movonguhela—and, at a pinch, or a punch, can make a pretty good stump speech; but he understands as much about diplo- macy, the law of nations, and the general princi- ples of political economy, as a Flat Head Indiaa, and so he would fraukly tell any one, if asked the qvestion. No! no! Lf the Governor is to wax fat on federal pap, patronage, and power, it will be in the customs, or in the Land Department; or, it ro be, that he will be sent as a commissioner to an Indian tribe, although, strange to say, he pro- fesses utter ignorance of the Winnebago and Kiek+ apoo dialects. In ease of his excellency’s resigna- tion before the meeting of the Legislature, the Hon. George Darsie, of Alleghany, will have to sign or veto bills, pardon convicts, and sppeint the $100 per annum Judges, until January 1861. Mr. Jarsie is the Speaker pro tem of the Senate, an un- flinching whig, and a most amiable and talented gentleman. lie has been a member of the Legislas lure for some ten years, and is well known through- out the State for the zeal which characterized his eflorts (through the direction of Col. Robinson, of Pittsburgh) to seeure the nght of way through Pennsylvania for the Baltimore aad Ohio Railroad —etlorts which resulted in mortifying failare—and which so incensed the citizens ‘of Alleghany in general, and Pittsburgh, in particular, it they came near raising the standard of nullificatton, 80 far as our good, old, be-devilled commonwealth was concerned. , p The amount of coal received by the Schuylkill Navigation for the week eading Cet. 25, was 15,- 128 tons—totel for the season, 388,871 ton By the Reading Railroad, for the same week, 24,961— total for the season, 921,593. The keel of a splendid packet ship has just bee laid at Vaughan & Lyan’s ship yard, Kem ae. Her burthen will be about 1.300 tons, and she tended for Cope’s line of Liverpool packets. (vite a gloom has been thrown over our come munity by the intelligence of the death of the ve- nerable John Potter, isq , at Princeton, N. J. He leaves an immense estaie—a portion of whieh is landed property in Georgia. Mr. Hudson concludes a brilliant and profitable engagement at the Walnut thisevening. Among the noieble plans proposed by the com- mussioners of Moyamensiag, for the suppression of riots in their distiiet, is the election of four addi- tional police officers. The getters up of these riots, of course, will have a voice poteatial in the selection and election of uns vhty increase to the police force of Moyamensing ; and, judging from past experience, their suflrages will not be bestowed on ungrateful persoos, Watchmen, courtables and lunp-lighters have takea part ia the fights and forays of the “ Killers ;” and it is said that during the great rot, on the night of the Ith, many of them were quite enth: ei their ¢ endation of the scicatitic style ia whieh the brick-bats and paving-stones were throwa and hurled. these circumstances, to inerease the police furee of Moyomensing would be merely to erease the triends of the rowdy gangs that district, Whe ap r to have political as wellas sicu! A very worthy young gentlemona, who reoices n the real or assumed name of Warner, last evens ing entered the store of Mr. Buily, in Market street, and desired to look at his watches, with the view { to suit his faney or poeket; and, while ehatlering about the price, be kept edging and edgins towards the door, which he finaily reached, and thea rushed up the street with a velocity that made his coat tails stick out behind at an angle of degrees. The fair of t anklin Inetitute closed last evening, with an eloquent address by the Hon. Jebn K. Keone, of lever writing celebrity. To- morrow evening, Mr. Jackson is to give a maga ficent display of fireworks, What connection py- rotechnies have with the ob whieh the Prank lin Institute are supposed to have in view, many of your readers will no doubt be ata loss to undere stand.
