It will be seen that the defeat of the whigs in that State is overwhelm- ing—their opponents having elected their candi date for Canal Commissioner by a large majority, and obtained probably a lurge majonty also in the Legislature; while the whig candidate for Mayor of Philadelphia is defeated, for the first time in more than twenty years—and a democratic Sheriff of the city and county of Philadelphia has been elected, for the firet time since 1340. The other county officers, it appears, are about half whigs and half democrats.
