Bince four o'clock yesterday afternoon we have had reveral brisk showers of rain, bwing the first that have done more tl Jay the dust, in this vicinity, for the past forty da: The election on Wednesday excites much attention, and both democrats and whigs are strataing every nerve for the victory, The democrats are not without fear, respecting this district, and have sent out twenty emissaries to bring home all the mechanics who are en- titled to vote, but are temporarily working in the Dis- trict of Columbia, and at other points. The impres- sion is gaining ground, however, that there wii c no change in the Congressional delegation of the State— that is to say, it will remain four whigs to two demo- orate. ‘The temperance question, it seems, will hardly be brought to bear op the legislative question, roo all, ‘The temperance men held @ meeting and propounded questions to the democratic and whig candidates, as to whether they would, if eleoted, vote against the repeal of the law probibiting the sale of liquor on the Sabbath, They all evaded & direct answer, in their replies, ex- cept Mr, John Watchman. one of the whig sandidates, who announced bimseif a son of temperance, an a friend of the Sunday law, pledging himseif to sustain it if elected.
