the dircetion is anzioue to hide. There is one fact, which an exhibit of the list of stockholders would Dring to light, which is that the whole board of direc- tors, seventeen in number, do not own five hundred shares of stock. It is not, therefore, surprising they are afraid to show the stoek list, partioularly upon the eve of an election. If is well that the stockholders should krow what kind of men compose the direction of the Erie Railread Company, and what measures are adopted to cover up their illegal acts. The slight- est attempt on the part of the management of any ineerporated company, to keep its affairs secret. is eonelus! lence that there is something wrong, that there is something going om that should net meet the public eye, and the stockholders should put the seal of condemnation upon every member of the board f directors who is a party to the refussl to give the desired information. The supposition that any appli- eant for an examination of the stock list of the Erie Railroad Company is short of the stock is absurd, but this is ne more than what might be expected from the *peeulating directors in any of our railroad companies. ‘Those directors are bulls in the market, and are at all times disposed to make estimates of the most extrava- gant character, for the purpose of inflating prices; but when sn individual whom they msy suppose is short of the stook, applies for any information, their mouths are shut, and it is impossible to get a word out of them. ‘There has been extravagance and corruption enough in the management of the financial affairs of the Erie Railroad Company to sink a dozen boards of directors, ‘and a soon as an ecposé is made we shall see the feathers fly. By closing their stock books, by making no reports of expenditures or cost of road, by making no returns of loans negociated, the directors may for a time keep the stockholders ignorant of the true state of things, but the truth must come out, sooner or later. ‘The annexed statement exhibits the cost, income and expenses, of the railroads composing thi notre line through this State, according to returns made to the Secretary of State, for the year 1848. The total length of these roads is 33034 miles, Centrat Ling or RAILROADS—StateE oF New Yor: Cost, Jucome. bard and Sel tad: Uties and Bchonestady 328,108 and Utica. 577,883. i ‘one B6.6L1 Attica aud Buffalo, 390,869, Total... ... 64... - SU1,355,906 2,617,108 1,696,143 ‘This line, extending from Troy to Buffalo, is tra, versed now by an express train by daylight; and when the Hudson River Railroad is finisaed, the distance by this route between New York and Buffalo will be 480 miles, against 520 miles between New York and Dua- kirk, via the Erie Railroad, showing a difference ip favor of the central route ef 42 miles. It is anticipated’ when the Hudson River Railroad is completed, that the run between New York and Albany will be made by the express trains in five hours, which, added to the time now made between Troy or Albany and Buffalo, will make en aggregate of 17 hours between New York and Lake Erie. This will be greater speed than bas yet been made on any other railroads in this coun- try, and must command the great travel between the ‘Western lakes and the seaboard. It is considered that as high a rate of speed may be attained upon this line of road, with equal safety, as upon any road in England or in the world; the running time of the express trains averages twelve hours and several minutes; the highest speed yet attained at any point upon this line is forty-two miles per hour. This attained, on alate occasion when the train was Debind its time, upon that portion of the road extend- ing from Auburn to Rochester; distance, 78 miles; e, 1 hour 46 minutes. The cities and towms be- tween Buffalo and Troy, which are intersected by this road, are Schenectady, Utica, Rome, Syracuse, Au- burn, Seneca Falls, Waterloo, Geneva, Canandaigua, Rochester, Attica, Batavia, and Buffalo. The road is owned by several companies, comsisting of the Troy and Schenectady, Utica and Sehenectady, Syracuse and Uties, Auburn Syracuse, Auburn and Roches. ter, Tonawanda and Attica, and Buffalo railreads. Pro- pesals have been received to consolidate these several eompanies into one; and we have no doubt but that the arrangement will be, sooner or later, effected. The advanteges of such a union would be incaleulable, while the evils, which it fs imagined would fellow it, are the mere fancies of short-sighted or interested par- ties. There are no good reasons why such @ eombination of the wealth and telent of the several eompanies should net be immediately secured. ‘The road, for the whole distance, is constructed with the heavy iron rail; ove or two of the companies im. ported their rails from England, but the large proper- tion is of American manufacture; double tracks are Deing laid at various points along the line, and the time is not distant, when the double track will be laid throughout the entire distance. Two of the compa: niee—the Auburn and Rochester, and the Auburn and Syracuse—are making arrangements to carry eut the plan of union and consolidation so far as they, indivi- dually, are concerned. These companies intend to con- solidate their stock for the purpose of constructing @ bie or parallel road between Syracuse and Rochester. ‘There is agreat want of a double track between those cities, ard it will be twenty-five miles shorter than the present road. There are several beautiful aud pros- perous villages lying ufion the Erie Canal, between Syracure and Rochester. ‘These villages. among which are Weedsport, Lyons, Newark, Palmyra, &., have hith- erto been deprived of the benefits of uninterrupted rail- rend communication; it Is, therefore, proposed to build the double track so as to intersect these thriving towns, This will not only secure an increase of tra- vel, but it will also materially shorten the journey from New York to Buffalo, So great has been the want of @ railroad through this route, that for several years past a company of gentlemen have been making pplications to the Legislature for suthority to bulld ‘8 road along this new route; but the Legislature, con- ceiving that the grant of sucha charter would seriously damoge the interests of the present road trom Syracuse to Rochester, refused to give the necessary authority. ‘The present companies, doubtless apprehending that the application will be repeated, have determined to build the double track themselves. During the present year, daily express train hes been run between Albany and Troy and Buffalo, ‘This train performs the journey in fifteen ours, Pas- yngere leaving Troy or Albany im the morning, are thus enabled to reach Buffalo on the same eve- ning in time to take steamers for Chicago and the intermediate porte ; but passeugers returning from Poflalo to Albany, leave the former city in the express train at half-past five, A.M, and arrive Im Albany at halt. past eight, P.M the present system, the Hodson river steamers, whieh leave Albany at seven, FP. M., refuse to wait until the arrival of the train, and parrengers are therefore detained in Albany until the next day, The proper way to avoid this detention is, in coming East, to change cars at Schenectady, and to take the train for Troy at that point; en the arrival of the train at Troy, @ steamboat will De in waiting to convey passengers to New York, where they arrive next morning, without delay. If it be trae, as we are informed, that this ar- rapgement has been completed, the journey from Butta Jo to New York will be performed in lese than twenty- four ber ‘The fare by railway from Troy to Buffalo varies from $6 (second clase) to $9 (first class); the fare on the steamships, from Buffalo to Chicago, is about $10; the whole journey from Now York t¢ Chicago, in- eluding food and lodging, may be performed for $25. ‘The locomotives used upon the Troy and Buffalo Railrond are in every rerpect equal to the English loco- motiyer; they are capable of transporting « train of ears sixty miles in sixty minutes, [t has been deter- mined by the several companies to run their trains through from Lake Erie to the Hudson river (380 miler) fn ten hours, With a good and efficient police system, like that which i practived upon all the railroads in Fogiend, a epeed of 45 miles per hour, including stop- poger, might be attained with perfect safety. There Js nothing to prevent such « desirable result ; the rails are laid with extraordinary accuracy, and upon por- tions of the line (the Tonawanda, particularly) the road cannot be surpassed, The police system, to which we refer, consists of signals guards. 10 should be stationed not more than # mile apart, along the entire line, The damage often resulting from a single col- Histon of the trains, would pay the yearly salary of such a guard twice over. In relation to the financial diMeulties and embarrass. mente of the New England railroads, the Boston 7a road diMevities continae to be the oanang in moneyed circles, and every day's in vestign 4 observation serve bot to ensbarrace the bert in progress already embarked fo far tn t roads, and have become inv , that it ie imposstbie to retrace our vt great pecuniary lose; to stand ptill world be ruinous; and to go ahead is impossible, without » amount of . A stranger in the city, lately from Kentucky, of the pame of Hamilton B Gaither, was taken suddenly siok yesterday at his lodgings, King’s Hotel, and died last night at 11 o'clock.
