The stock market continues in a condi tion similar to that we bave reported during the past mouth; aud as regards prices, neither the bulls or the Dears bave bad much the advantage of each other: ‘The abundance of unemployed eapital, and the fayor- able rates upon which loans cun be made, enable the bulls to carry stocks without increasing the cost of them to apy extent; while the bears, knowing that | prises rule so much above the real value of the ies, are firmly convinced that they cannot long be sustained. It fs the general impression in the street that the money market will eontinue easy throughout the approaching business season; but even with such an auxiliary, it is not very probable that any spe” culation of importance will take place in stocks. It 1s, however, possible that some of the fancies, | the value of which is not so clearly settled, may be | moderately inflated; but railroad stocks, particu- | larly those which are known to be rotten and un- | sound to the core, eannot be galvanized as they have been in years past. The obligations of railread com- | panies, in all parts of the world, have increased so ra- pidly and so steadily, that most of them are so burdened with the accumulation ef interest, that there la no hope of relief, The competition which has slready been | realized in the most densely populated parts of the eountry, bas foreed the companies into expenditures, and into @ reduetion of eharges for transportation, which © materially restricted their profits, even in the face of increased reeeipts The operations of our | railroad companies during the past three or four years have thoroughly eonvinced us that they are bubbles of the highest order. One would suppose, from the’na- ture of the business of these concerns—from the charac- ter of the property whieh the stock represonts—from their intimate connection with the progr d pros. perity of the eountry, that they must be the safest and most produetive investments in the market; but such is not the care. In Greet Britain, as well a# inthi® country, they bave been the ruin of thousands; aud thourends are at this moment holding these stocks, under the vain hope that ultimately they will be worth somethi end remunerate them for their long delay. if these works were economically and ly maneged—if the cost of construction was and the works were completed, there would bo tome ground for hope—rome probability that wlti- mately the stockholders would receive dividends; but there concerns are not in proper hand: to enable us to expect such favorable reeulte, Tey are managed too much with an eye to private interests, aod the stock — belders bave therefore little chanee of returns from their investments, In any shape. They are not only deprived of dividends but their stock ie bere gc thirty. forty, and fifly per cent. Specie . Duties 100 ‘Tho value of merchandise imported during the past week, was nearly double that for the corresponding | week last year, and largely in excess of the imports for the same week in 1946 and 1847. The duties upon such a large importation were of course large, and the de- porites in the Suv-Treasury have increased. The cvipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer of this port, yesterday, amounted to $78,528 58; payments, $33,- 566 15; advices, $52,000; balance, $1,157,682 70. The July interest on the government debt having been mearly all paid, the accumulations in the Treasury hereafter will be rapid. More than one-half of the importations during the past week, was in dry goods, ubout twenty-five per ecnt of which have been warehoused, as will be seen by the annexed statement :-— Movements iy Forsian Dry Goons, Withdrawn from Ent. fo Warehouse, Warehousing. i Entered at om Hous 1. $85 Of Hewp....: Misceliancous, Totals. ‘This looks as though the fall importation was going to be immense. From the complexion of our advices . from the manufacturing districts of Great Britain, we should judge that the orders on hand were very large, and that the shipments will beextensive. We have no doubt the importation wil! be large, whatever may be the prorpeets relative to the home trade ‘The Comptroller ot this city has given notice that he will receive proposals, in «ums of $100 and upward, for a Joan of $86,000, being a portion of the city water loan of 1849, not dirposed of when the original bids wore opened, This loan bears interest at the rate of five per cent. per annum, and proporals will be reeeived at not less than par, at the Comptreller’s office, until noon of | the 18th of July. ‘The Reading Railroad Company have declared a di- vidend of two and @ haif per cent on its preferred stock. payable on demand, én eash. ‘The Brooklyn and Jamaica Railroad Company have declared a dividend of three and @ half per cent. Our advices from London state that the recent pro- posals of the State of Indiana, topostpone the payment of the interest, which will be payable on its bonds on the lst of July next, has ereated considerable vexation and incertitude in the minds of the holders of these bonds, Any thing that tends, however temporarily, | to disturb the regular payments of interest on loans in @ foreign market, must tell injuriously upon the in- vestment itself The expenditures of the State of Conneeticut for the fiscal year, ending March Slst, 1849, were $142,242. The regular receipts into the Treasury were $120,242, and there was borrowed for the school fund $18,000 The echool tund amounts to $406,000. and there was due {o it from the State Treasury $46,212. ‘The business of the Welland Canal shows a gratify- ing increase upon last year. During the month just clored, 317 versels went through, against 238 for the corresponding month of last year. In June of 1847, when commerce was the busiest ever known, the num- ber reached 876, Of the voasels last month, 110 passed up and 115 down for American ports, and 40 up and 52 ADVERTISEMENTS BENEWED EVERY DAY. aE «SPECIAL NOTICES, OARD @F HEALTH —NOTICE.—AT A MERTING or ‘itary Committee of the Board of agit held © following reoolatio wae adopted :— t ve the laws of eases be ‘requested vo state, in thaie reparta, th residenes, cet pation, aad partionlarly their pluses Board of Health, JACOB F. From them we extract a few items of intelligenoe. The fate of the State prisoners was very little spoken of, all parties having made up their minds that any further attempts on their bebalf were useless, at least for the present. The fact of the Corporation of London taking up the idea of founding # colony in the West of Ireland, has given unbounded ratisfaction; but greater still is the joy ot the citizens of Dublin, at the certainty of a royag visit iu the month of August. Some ef the Young Ireland party, it is said, contem- plate making a move on behalf of the State prisoners, when she arrives, by presenting @ memorial praying for ® political amnesty, Were her Majesty so advised, the adoption of this course would exercise a most salutary effect, and ren- der Victoria & justly beloved sovereign, It is satisfactory to learn that the accounts from all parts of the Kingdom. respecting the crops, are of the most encouraging character. The cholera is dimi-+ nishing, and hopes are entertained that the worst stage of the famine is over. in our letters and papers, received this morning, we are glad to flud that the intended visit of the Queen bailed with pleasure, wherever it is made known. Thi is only what might be expected, from the confide we have in th foy ty of the Irish people. Her Majes ty. we or will everywhere moet with a cordial reception; dn uenerentne country may have suffered from mirgovernment in times past, the whole body of well-disposed inhabitants must be re that the Queen, personally, and her Minister: are strongly desirous to do averything in their power to place the prosperity, and conseqneut happiness, of the couatry ‘ov # firm basis; and we ean conceive nothing more like- to aid this desirable object, than the occasional visite | of the court tolreland. Arrangements are already being made for her Majesty to hold a levee and drawing-room at Dublin Castle, and we find it slated by the /veem Journal that Marquis of Londonderry has gi orders for the Kagoment of an extensive suit of apartments at Morrison's Motel, for the occupation of his family and retinue during the Royal visit; an example which, we have no doubt, will be followed by the rest of the nobility connected with Ireland. ‘The Mountstewart Elphinstone, having on board Mr Jobn Martin and Mr. Kevin O'Degherty, two of the State prisoners convicted of treason, sailed from ( ow the 28th instant. for Australia. TURE. = France. ‘The latest intelligence from Frauee is dated May 23; bat there is pothing important in it, the only infe- renee to be drawn, being that the French were still Lar igg creer J themeelves iu the breach they have made, pean which th nable to pass without more fighting. as the breach an inner in- trenetiment, built behiud the first by the Komans. ‘The weekly returns of the Bank of France are eome to band; they show that the amount of bullion in Paris and the branch banks had imcreased five millions.— ‘The discount aecommodation kad decreased one mil- lion. The amount ourrent of the teasury has decreas> ed upwards of two millions, The bullion in the Bank of Frapoe, nearly amounts to the value of the notes in circulation The Minister of War had reeeived two despatches from General Oudinot, containing particulars of the tiege operations. ‘The ministerial journals hold on their way soberly, avoiding all exciting topics. The opposition papers, obliged to prererve a po less prudent course, protest im general terms against the restraints under whieb they fofler, alleging an indixputable truth, that such re- straint cannot be maintained long without causing reaction of@ very serious character.
