Mr. Foote having e21 utot= | ed the theme of praise, took occasion to advert to the working of our constitution and the which it secures, and insisted that the peo)! manded the exercise of the veto power to arreat the schemes of fanatics for the dissol. Union, before their notions ass laws ; and at this point b i President, as much as to say, expect you to interpose your prerogative.’ Bonnets Senator wound up by a loag Latin quo- tation, and then took his seat. “Brother Slicer pro« nounced the benediction, and the assembly dis- persed. We think that, before a the address was too stron occasion that did not call for the landation of party measures. Betore the Jackson Democratic Association alone, there could hive been vo ob- jection. It seemed as if General Foote was read- ing the present adm nistration—severa! of the exe- cutive officers being present—a lecture as to how public aflars should be conducted, and: invites it to follow in the footsteps of its illustrious predecessor.” There are two things we love about this gentleman—his warm-heartedness and bold- ness of declamation. He felt what he said, and spoke as though his sentiments could not be gain- said. ‘The eulogy will appear in the Unton, with additional remarks In commendation. Our new city postmaster has removed the ne- phew of Amos Kendall, as chief clerk, and ap- pointed, in his stead, Wm. H. Gunnell, a lumber merchant of Washington, Captain Goddard, chief of the Auxillary Guard, and John L. Henshaw, are, it is said, to be ap- vinted assistants to Mr. Wallach, the United States Marshal. Mr. Jonas B. Ellis, a principal overseer in the Navy Yard, is mentioned as the successor ef Capt. Goddard. It was announced in an official bulletin, on Fri- day, that there had been, from the 25th ot June to that time, fifteen cases of cholera and seven deaths. ‘Within the last three days no new eases have been reported, and our citizens are felicitating them- selves that the danger is past. However, the Board of Health advise the people how to prepare their siceping apartments, and what articles of food nd what to eat. The city is as healthy asever at this season, as may be judged by the fact that, in a population of more than thirty thou- sand, there were but sixty-six deaths during the month of June, or one in every four hundre: fifty-five. t Irs. Dolly Madison, relict of the late ex-Presi- dent Madison, died to-day. She was a Miss Payne, and Mr. Madison married her in Philadel phia, while Congress was there in seasion, and he aSenator. ‘There are now living the widows of, we believe, but three ex-Presidents, viz :—M . Q. Adams, Mrs. W. Hi. Ilarrison, and Mrs. J. K. Polk. The demise of Mrs. Madison has filled our community with sorrow — For many years she has resided in the neighborhood of the President's house, and on every New Year's day held her levee, to which citizens and strangers resorted. apparently, upwards of eighty years of age wa: epeaeee in a white turban. Absence of the Cholera—Improved Health of tie Ctty—Funeral Honors to ex-President Polk— Laberia Gold—Custom Howse Swep—th®Mar- kets, &c. The cholera still continues outside of the baili- wick of the Board of Health of Baltimore, to the surprise of everybody within the aforesaid limits. The why and wherefore of this exemption, no one seems to be able to account for, unless it be in the Board of Health, who attribute it to their valuable labors. However, they have certainly done very well, so far, and it is to be hoped that they will hold out faithful to the end. ‘The number of deaths in Baltimore during the past week was 112, whilst in the corresponding week of 1848, the number was 136, showing a de- crease of 241n favor of the present season. ‘There was also, during the week of last year alluded to, 6 deaths by dysentery and two by diarrhea, whilst during the past week there was bat one by dysen- tery, and none by diarrhena. Taking the last six weeks, and the corresponding six weeks of ISt%, and mparivon shows an equally favorable con dition of the health of the eity during the preseat season. ore ape six weeks of 1843, the number ef deaths was 657, and during the past six weeks there were but 547, showing a decrease of 110, The committee appointed to arrange for aj priate funeral honers to the me: of ex-Presi- dent Polk, have agreed that the first Monday in September shall be set apart for that The oration willbe delivered by Jadge Espred, nd Colonel Solomon Hillen has been appoiated chiet aan Lia place of Col.
