COMMERCIAL AFFAIRS. MONEY MARKET. Monday, May 21—6 P. M. ‘The stock market opened quite buoyant this morn- ing, and the sales at the first board were unusually large, and exhibited an advance in nearly every one in the list, on tho closing prices of Saturday. We should judge from this that there was a speculative movement about commencing; but Wall street matters are so ‘very uncertain, that we should not be surprised to see prices fall back again, and the market become as much opressed as it has been at‘any time during the past month. It will be seen by the quotations to-day, that government stocks have advanced, and have nearly reached the price predicted a few months since.— Pennsylvania 5's have advanced several por cent within ‘the past week or two, and prices now ruling are higher than have beon realized for along time. Money must neck investments in these stocks, for the supply is so great that it cannot be so profitably employed in any other way. At the first board to-day, U. 8. 6's, 1867 and 1868, ad- vanced % per cent; Treasury Notes §; Erie Bonds ‘4; Pennsylvania 5's 34; Farmers’ Loan }4; Erie Railroad 44; Canton Company 4; Mohawk 44; Harlem 4; Long Island ‘4; Reading Railroad 3z. The bears have been ‘well caught on government and State stocks, and if ‘thoy are not careful they will get caught inthe same ‘way on the fancies. & The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer ‘of this pert, to-day, amounted to $33,105 60; payments, $19,852 24; advices, $57,000; balance on hand, $2,- 121,074 27. The arbitrators in the case of the contractors against the Norwich and Worcester Railroad, have found 4hut $15,000 are due from the sompany to the con- ‘tractors. ‘The value of merchandise and specie imported in the ‘port of Boston for the month of April, 1849, was $1,061,- 796, against $1,656,115 for the corresponding month last year. Tho increase this year has been in the re- ceipts of specie. The duties received for the month this year amounted to $573,026—last year to $389,528. From the Commissioner's report to the Legislature of Connecticut, we learn that the banks of that State were nover ina sounder condition, The liabilities of ‘the whole number, on the first of April, wore $7,015,- 34071; the resources $16,920,097 93. The whole amount of banking capital is $5.956.916 76; circulation $4,511,571 06; specie on hand $575,676 07; bills dis- counted $13,740,591 07; surplus $684,315 06. The pro- pent circulation of the banks is less than it was one year ago, by nearly $400,000. ‘The quotations for foreign and domestic exchanges, epecie, and for uncurrent money, in this market, rule, as annexed :— Foxrton Excnancrs. 108s 108% On Amsterdam, Bao 2° On Hamburg. dry Domestic Excnanors. 40 0 10! 36 9 35) a M dis ft - ply checks, Carolus dolls.$1,01 Five francs... Sterling bills have been in moderate demand for the steamer leaving Boston on Wednesday, but the rates remuin the same as previously quoted.— Bills on Paria are scarce, and the rates ruleso high that shipments of specie to some extent have recently been made. ‘The packet for iavre takes out a large amount of specie, principally silver. ‘The Knickerbocker Fire Insurance Company have declared a dividend of seven per cent. payable June Lst. ‘Tho Bartlett Mills, of Newburyport, have declared a semi-annual dividend of 3 per cent. The James Mills, of Newburyport, lave declaved a semi-annual dividend of 3 per cent, The Norfolk County Raiircad Company have as- signed all their personal property, for the benefit of their creditors and stockholders, to Messrs, George B. Upton, Samuel Hooper, and Sewell Tappan, of Boston, as trustees, The trains of the road are to run regularly, as before. The road has a large amount of paper, which is nearly due, and this step bas been taken with the concurrence of the largest creditors, and to pre- vent attachments and Jaysuits, The roal is doing quite as good a business as was expected at first, The annexed table exhibits the quotations for the principal public securities of the country, in this mar- ket, at the respective periods named :— Quorarions ror Pusiio Seounitren. The probabi- ity is, that money will be cheap and abundant through- out the summer. Large amounts of money will, between. this and the 1st of August, be paid out, in the shape of dividends on government, State and railroad stocks, which, with the supply of specie which must soon be coming along from California, will keep the market casy and the rate of interest down. The sloop-of-war Lexington was at Rio Janeiro on the 18th of April, to eave on the 20th for New York. If she sailed on the day reported, we may look for her arrival any day. She has on board gold, in bars and in dust, valued at about two hundred thousand dollars. Upon the arrival of this gold, we hope its owners will send it at once tothe mint, and order it coined into gold dollars. From all we can hear, it appears that the banks are making efforts to prevent an issue of dollar ccinage toany great extent, fearing, no doubt, it might inter- fere with their issues of small bills. It is stated that the banks have refused to pay out foreign gold, under the impression that it is wanted for coinage into gold dol- lars. The only way to prevent the banks accomplishing the object they have in view, is to order all the Califor- nia gold coined into gold dollars. Any person sending foreign gold, gold in dust, or bars, to the mint, can get it coined intoany denomination of American coin; and it is in the power of individuals to increase the circu- lation of the gold dollar toa very great extent, unless there is some collusion between the officers of the mint and the banks. Individuals desirous of increasing the issue of this convenient coin, ean do so by purchasing foreign gold, and sending it to the mint for coinage.— ‘They will have returned dollar for dollar, so there will be no loss, the alloy being sufficient compensation for the government. Here is an opportunity for those op- posed to the circulation of smallbills,to act; and we trust that during the two years (from the 3d of March last) the coinage of gold dollars is authorized, millions of them will be issued, that we may drive out of circula- tion, at all events, part of tho immense quantity of small bills, which so frequently preve to be worth little more than the paper they are printed on, 3d... 1854: Stock Exchange. ‘ 8.00 US 60, ‘67 113% 100 shs siarlem RR’ by) 594 So” do” “6s, cou Il4ig 200 do ross 6,000 do ‘do 14 do 50 10,000 do_trans 144g 150 do rs 10,000 Treas Notes, bIOMT 100 do B30 50 2000 do m1 10 do bimos 60° 5000 Erie Br: 7 do bimos 60. i 8 10 do BIO 595 400 do 505 do proffull 109! u 5 Utica & Sehtdy scrip 120 O75 Long Island mR 23 § do 100 Reading RR IO 100 ao bI0 100 do. 260 bs) 49N Y& N Haven RR 51 do ‘yO 363 fo do 26 wD do s6mos 20 Ohio Life & Trust 85'y 200 Canton Co 203 Erie RR, new full, 62) ev] Read ing Ou 0 28 10 do & Mohawk RR SECOND BOARD. 100 shs Farm Trust «3 35 ©6100 shs Farm Trust #00 34 200 do p60 B5%{ 100 Reading RK bs BL 400 do ‘36% 100 do St 1000 do = b12mos 38-125 Harlem RR oo 100 do 010 36 60 Canton Co rex 38! wD do roe 36 & Long Island RR 2) “ADVERMSEMENTS RENEWED BVERY DAY.
