With such afine cast as this, the play will be performed in the ‘most perfect manner, and will afford « fine treat to the Jovers of the Shaksperian drama. The farce of “ His Last Legs’! will conclude the entertainments, Mr. Ryan playing the part of O'Callaghan. Broapway Turatre.—This season of theatrical rival. ty between the two great chieftains of the histrionic art, Mosers, Forrest and Macready, is attracting large ‘audiences every night they perform, and is a source of teat profit to the managers of the theatres in which they play. Every night, the Broadway theatre is «crowded to its utmost capacity by the friends of Mr. Forrest, to witness the performance of his role of char- acters, in order to make comparisons between him and the great Europian tragedian, Mr. Macready. Last evening, the entertainments commenced with Dr. Bird's tragedy of “ The Gladiator,’ Mr. Forrest appearing in this peculiar character of tho Thracian, Spartacus. In ‘this part, Mr. Forrest may be said to have no equal, as, in his manly form, exhibiting symmetrical proportions above the ordinary east, he looks the character to great advantage, and the impassioned strains, descriptive of tho throes of a heart desirous to be released from the thraldom of slavish domination, received all the power which grent physical ability could impart to them. In the scene where his brother, Phasarius, demands Julia, the niece to Crassus, the rebuke of Spartacus to his bro- ther was a thrilling, effective effort, Again, in the last act, where Phasarius rushes in, almost breathless, and announces the slaughter of the wife and child of Spar- tacus, Mr, Forrest's convulsive throes and expression of horror, in losing all that he held dear on earth. were pictured to the very scene of reality. Dyott, as Phasa- rius, was cxcellent; indeed. his description of his losses in battle, and the horrid massacre of the gladiators, ‘was given with great artistic ability, In fine. all the “ther charactors were well filled, and the play through- out was ably sustained. At the end of the tragedy, there were three cheers for Forrest; and the call for the tragedisn was continued, until he appeared before the ceurtain and bowed his acknowledgments, Then Ma- dam Celeste and Wiethoff danced « grand per de deux, which was executed with much grace and elegance. ‘The evening's amusement concluded with the new farce of © Your Life's in Danger.” Forrest appears to- night as King Lear, when, no doubt, there will be another erowded house. Natiosa:. Tuxatue.—The grand spectacle of the “Enehanter” is enchanting the frequenters of the National, and a yast number of our citizens, who have ‘been constant visitors to the house sinee its produc- tion. It is one of these splendid pieced which are ‘qlways popular with the many, as it is replete with the most splendid scenic effects; and the glittering dresses, beautiful dances, melodious chorusus, agin ficent processions. are indeed worthy of the highest commendation. As a piece of stage splendor, it cannot de surpassed, and the acting of all concerned in it ts also very excellent, In order to give those persons who cannot reach the theatre early enough an opportunity to witness the whole of this splendid spectacle, a popu- lar farce will be acted with it. this evening. The piece geleeted is “ Simpson & Co, one of the most lnughable farces acted. We recommend those who have not yot seen the “ Enchanter,” to take an early opportunity of doing 80, as they will be surprised and delighted at the perfection to which stage magnificence is carrled now- a-days. Burron's Turatne.—The five act comedy of Brough- am, “Romance and Reality,” was again performed last night, and proved to be another triumph for its author, The more the public hear the language of this play, they more they appreciate its elegance and wit, Every character delineated by Brougham has a eculiar kind of humor, a pointe, a piquancy, which are Thstantly discovered, and draw forth laughter and ap- lauso, Mr. Burton, as Asper Manly. is inimitable; Fis irascible temper i# true as nature, and his mimic capital. Tauennacte.—Demrsren’s Concert.—This evenin; Mr. Dempster will give one of his delightful vocal tertainments at the Taberuacle, when no doubt, those strangers, now in the city, will patronize such charming entertainment, particularly so as it no way interferes with their religious seruples. The pro- gramme contains = of his most beautiful ballads; among those are the “May Queen,’ When the Night Wind,” “ John Anderson, my Jo, A Home in the Heart,” “The Death of Warren,” and the “Blind Boy.’ Those who have heard Mr. Dempster, require little prompting to hear him aguin. as his plaintive style of singing has made him a generat favorite wherever ho has appeured. Mrs. McLran.—Thia talented actress, who has been t winter, absent from our city, on a pro- in the Southern and Western States, returned a few days ago to New York, andis yet without engagement. We advise the managers to try torceure the services of Mrs. McLean. who possesses the most versatile genius in her profession, and may be very useful to any troupe. Mapam Lovanyey ano Mn, Srorret. late of the Mo- ravian Vocal Company, are now in this city, after a successful Southern tour, Cunisry’s Mixstneis.—These philosophers haye done a tremendous business during the present week, evening their houre has been crowded to overtlowing, and they never were in better voices and spirits, ‘Thoie songs, chorusses. &e., are given with the best effect, and their performances as banjo players, dancers, &., are not to be surpassed, Their “ Voyage Musicale” continues to be as much appreciated as ever, as also thelr celebrated “ Cowbellogian” buslesque, They give a grand programme to-night. Curvese Museum.—Missionaries are almost daily de- spatched to China, and we should think that it must be a considerable drawback to their usefulness, having to spend so much time as they must,to learn the man- nerd and customs of this, singular people Now a visit to the Museum at present exhibiting here, would give them a full insight into these things, previous to s art- ing. As amatter of utility in such cases, and as @ most interesting exhsbition generally, we recommend this Mureum to the public. New Orurans Serenanens.—Tho admiraolo singing of these eerenaders has acquired for them most envia- blo reputation throughout the Union; here in New York they are most especial favorites, and during the long period ,they have been among us they have ac- quired a vast number of patrons among our most re- spectable and intelligent citizens. At the close of the present week, they will leave New York for a short time, to fulfill engagements elsewhere. Those who wish to hear them had better do so at onc Vorrtanpen’s Micrscossc Virws are attracting much attention from all our citizens, A more beauti- ful exhibition can scarcely bo imagined. and the many Leautitul views of scenery in various parts of the world, portraits of distinguished characters, &c., not forget- Hing the wonderful Kaleidiscope, are well worth seeing yy all. Insaxity or Rossix1.—We regret to learn from the Boston Advertiser, that Rossini, the most popular of living composers, is stated, in private letters from Italy to Paris, to have become insane, He had not been able to bear up against the shock of political events. Persecuted as a moderate, by a revolutionary faction who were exasperated at the ruin of their cause—hay- ing escaped miraculously from a furious band who had come to kill him, and who not having found him, had shot him in effigy—Rossini only preserved his life; and his great mind has been shattered by such terrible emotion. Great compssers would seem to be especially liable to these attacks of mental derangement. Morart, Donizetti, and now Rossini, are on the list of ilustri- ous victims, Macready, in a letter to a gentleman in Boston, says he will leave New York for Kurope on the 6th of next month, Mr, Henri Herz and his incomparable singers Signo- rina Truff, Signor Benedetti and Signor Rosi, and that pocrloes violinist, Mr, Cowen, were to give a concert in Norfolk, Va., on the 7th inst, Miss Julia Dean has been highly successful in Nor- folk, Va. We have nothing new to record relative to the stook market; prices remain without any material alteration, and everthing in Wall street is dull and inactive, With such an easy money market this is something unusual, There must be a change of somo sort before the Lapse of manyfdays. Our next advices from Europe may create & movement one way or the other, The arrival of the Crescent City from Chagres, with later accounts from California, may give an impulse to,the stock market, and enable the bulls to get up prices for the fancies, so that they can relieve thomselves of a portion of the supply they haveon hard. The variations in quota- tions {to-day were only about one-cighth per cent,, but tho tendency was upward, and holders appear to be firm, The steady influx of specie, is placing the banks in a very strong position, and if money vecomes as plonty and as cheap as anticipated, there must be a speculative movement in the fancies, even if it does not come along until the middie of July, when the thermometer ranges among the nine- ties, It is the impression among many operators, that, if a speculative movement in stocks does not take placo before warm weather sots in, tho season is past, and they must wait until fall business commences; but thie fverronvous; we have known an enormous inflation in-prices in the middle of what is called the dull sea- fon, and we have also known of speculative movements to somo extent during o great scarcity of moncy and high rate of interest, It is impossible to tell anything about the movements of stock speculators in Wall street, only from day to day. We havo known stooks to fall on the receipt of the rost favorable intelligence from Europe, and riso upon the receipt of advices whioh were considered highly discouraging. Things so fre- quently go by contruries among the bulls and bears, that outsiders generally get the worst of any operations they have with either the one ortho other. Outsiders almost invariably are purchasers of the fancies for a rise, in- stead of being ellors for a fall; and it is the objeot of the proforsional epeculator to saddle the outsiders with all the stock they can possibly carry, or rather with more than they can carry for any length of time, so that they ‘will be compelled to sell at any depreciation which may be produced. This game the outsiders have discovered; or, in other words, they have got used to the play of the brokers, and are not so easily caught aa heretofore. The consequence is, that now the brokers have to carry the fancies, and the outsiders can only be induced to purchase at the most reduced prices. Most of the fancies are now in the hands of the Wall street brokers, and they are striving hard to draw in specu- lators, 80 as to relieve them of part of the burden. Fortunately. prices are low, and It'does not, therefore, take so much money to carry them, and the bulls are better able to keep their stocks out of the market when money is abundant. In view of this state of things, the prospect is de- cidedly in favor of an improvement in the stock mar- ket; but in spite of all this, it would not suprise us to see a further depreciation, and a continuation of the fame dull, inactive, market, realized during the past and Present week. The brokers cannot live long on each other. It is about as difficult to account for the milk in the cocoa nut, as it is to tell how some of the Wall street brokers continue to live so long, and apparently 80 well, on each other. ‘The steamship Hibernia is fully due at Halifax, from Liverpool. Her advices will be one week later, and of some importance, Parties here are anxious to learn the effect, in London, of the accounts taken out by the Canada, in relation to government securities, It is anticipated that an improvement in quotations for United States 6s would be realized in London, upon the receipt of intelligence from this side, of the great im- provement in our markets. A rise of one or two per cent. for United States 6s, abroad, would have a better effect upon financial affairs in this country, than the importation of millions of specie, The good effect would be more permanent, and our capitalists relieved of & large amount of stocks, at profitable prices, ‘The receipts of the Stonington Railroad Company for the months of March and April, 1849, were $34,666 36, against $28,595 87 for tho corresponding months last year, showing an increase of $6,070 99, equal to about 22 per cent. This is very good, if correct; but, unfortu- nately, the public do not believe in these statements, Stockholders ray they are continually hearing of in- creased receipts, but they never realize any of the be- nefits of them. There is a great deal of truth in that remark. The earnings of the Central Railroad for the month of April, 1848 and ’49, were as annexed ;— Centrav Rai-noan—Gronara.
