The sermon on the occasion was preached by Bishop Henshaw, of Boston; and, at the conclusion of the services, a liberal collection was taken up for the purposes of the Society. ‘The church was crowded on the occasion by a large and fashionable audience of the élite of New York Christian society. ‘The report of the Board of Managers was read at the conclusion of the church liturgical services. The report expresses much gratification at the results of the labors of the past year in this cause, and refers with exultation to the reports which the missionaries have made of their several labors among the seamen of the port of New York. The following is an account of the success experienced in this missionary work :— “Many incidents have occurred, warranting the belief tliat our labors and our prayers have not been in yain in the Lord. The captain, the officer, the sailor, and the boatman, have been melted to tears with the affecting and holy services of the church ; and cach have gone to our missionaries, with subdued and saddened spirit, confessing their past follies and vicious life, telling them of their troubled hearts and awakened censeiences, and asking also their counsel and their prayers. ‘The services upon the Lord's day and prineipal holy days have beengenerally well attend- ‘There has athird service upon Sunday in one of our chapels since September last, and during the season of Lentin the other. Seamen and boat- men are availing themselves more and more of these privileges, and manifesting an interest which gives f good results, Your board have opportunity to judge of these things for themselves, as it is made the duty of some of its members to be present at every service. Our success has encouraged hearts, moved by the love of God, tothe same holy work in other ports Phildelphia has within the past year, completed its beau- tiful floating church, and consecrated it to the worship and service of the Triune God. In other cities, too, where the sailor finds a harbor, there he also now finds God’s church and God's ministry, to remind him of his early vows, and to beseech and encourage him to leave the ways of sin and ruin, and return to hig Heavenly Father's house, where he will be instructed and protected—comforted in his sorrows—nourished and strenghthencd for the mighty conflict with the world, the flesh, and the devil. Nor is this all: the Bible and the Prayer Book, if he have them not, are always given him when leaving port, with tracts and some other good book, And besides, he may obtain at one of our chapels, a book from the library to oceupy his leisure moments and to remind him of the church, when far away upon the sea, or to lead him thither when he returns, and to the missionary who welcomes him upon his safety. This library, obtained by the contributions of some few friends of the mission, num- bers about 140 volumes, nearly all of which are in the hands of seamen and boatmen. It greatly needs in- crease. “The missionaries have distributed 653 Bibles, 665 Prayer Books, 79,000 pages of ‘Tracts, 2,600 Sailor's Manuai of Devotions, and other books, 2,650. There haye been baptized, 47; confirmed, 8 ; communicants added, 80 ; funerals, 20 ; marriages, 27.”” The board, however, complain of the want of sup- port, and the meagre supply of funds. | ‘There has been adebt incurred in the past year, of one thousand dollars, being a fourth part of the sum total of the current ex- penses of the year. No account is given in the report, of the modus operandi in which this four thousand dol- lars is distributed. The report having been read, Bishop Henshaw as- cended the pulpit and delivered a discourse applicable to the occasion. ‘The Bishop took his text from the 11th chapter of the Prophet salah, verses 10,11, and 12, “And in that day there shall be a root ef Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people. ‘To it shall the Gentiles seek, and hisrest shall be glortous,.” ‘The learned Bishop began, by remarking upon the many and very striking promises made concerning the Messiah, as the Saviour of them that believe, referring to him cither in his humiliation in the flesh, asa branch of the stem of Jesse, born of the house of David, when he was lone and humiliated, or referring to him in his glory, after he was risen from the dead. In all these promises and prophecies, he is spoken of in a manner suitable to the various situations he was placed in ; and the spirit of wisdom which filled him, the principles of his government, his power and might, are all declared. In the chapter from which the text’ is taken, a very graphic description is given of his kingdom and go- vernment—that righteousness will be the girdle of his loing; it will be a time of harmony and peace; the welf will lie down with the lamb, and an ensign will be set ed tow; hy flexible fe (este daveenmant are located _ up, to which all pations aud people shall foek. He nth deraemiat ‘of wil ancust af kts | (ike abeD? would Aart call attention, to te gathering together of the nations to this ensign. An ensign is 4 banner, generally referring to an army, showing that all who are under that ensign are enlisted in one cause, and engaged under some one service and dominion. Our Lord seems to refer to this prophecy, in some measure, when he said: “And J, if I be lifted up, will draw ull men unto to me,” Thereby he shows that. the only hope for man is in him, who 4s the only re- deemer and salvation of sinners.’ Thus it is that his ensign is lifted up by his ministers, who preach his name, when they show his power to save. In him all the promises are made, which promise deliverance from the world, the fiesh and the devil. We should never forget, observed the learned Bishop, that man is in a state of revolt and rebellion against God, his maker and creator, by evil-doing and sin. He has been drawn to participate in the revolt whieh Satan and his angels commenced. In this condition of rebellion and enmity against God, it is Christ alone who redeems his people, by his death and his resurrection from the dead. The text, how- ever, is not merely mandatory; it is also highly prophe- tic, It not merely points to Christ as already lifted up the Saviour and the Redeemer of all that seck him and put their trust in Him, bat it also refers, as A great prophecy, to the time which will undoubt- come when’ His kingdom will rule over all. he Bishop then proceeded to enlarge upon the pros. pect of the coming of the kingdom of Christ, when the will of God will be done on the earth as it is in heaven. He thought the signs of the times indicated the speedy approach of that day, and he regarded the present work on bebalf of which the congregation was appealed, to this evening to support it by their contributions, ag the more important, from being, in his view, one of the steps towards that millennial glory which was to be apected when the kingdom of Chirist and of pace and love would prevail, and the kingdom of this world of wrath, evil and hatred would be brought to an end. In this view, he regarded this work as the more import- ant. and having, therefore, the higher claims to their support. Here the learned Bishop drew a pleasing and delightful pieture of the happy day when the kingdom of truth and peace, that is, the kingdom of Christ, would reign and prevail on the earth, The learned Bishop then proceeded to advocate the cause of sailors, by a peculiar reference to the relationship they hold to commercial and mercantile men, whose instru- ments they are in rearing up and erecting their for- years it was fast falling off, and much changed in color, but | tunes. » constant risk and peril of their own liv ince using your Tricopherous, I feel my head always come | He deew a Wane aiheuag And true picture of the suff ace of sil my fosentanea en et Aaah 5: the amaze- ings and condition of this neglected class of people, and found it to give the most general satiation Pe Taely | showed what was to be expected from them when, their ou, : HARINE NELSON, COPY OF A LETTER FROM DR. Every sailor would then become a missionary, and knowledge would cover earth, as the breakers cover the sea, rned Bishop then concluded his discourse by an appeal on behalf of the seamen to the large congre- gation assembled, concluding, with this appeal, a dis- course to which, from the awkward position for hearing and taking notes in which we were, we regret it has not been in our waters to do the full justice which it de- werves, A liberal collection was then taken up for the pur- poses of the socioty; after which the usual ceremonies of the church were performed, the parting benediction given, and the congregation dispersed, Vancoyver’s Isuanp.—Mr. James Douglas, chief factor of the Hudson’s Bay Company, has been, appointed governor of the proposed settlement of Vancouver's Island.
