Curacoa, March 13, 1849. The Paez and Monagas Difficulttes—-Another Batile—State of Affairs, §c. Through the politeness of Capt. Doyle, of the fast sailing brig Reindeer, which sails this mora- ing, I send you a few items of the occurrences that have lately taken place in Venezuela. On the 13th December Jast an attack was made by the squa dron of Gen. Paez on the fleet of Mo- nagas, then lying at anchor between the bar of Ma. Yacaibo and the Castle of SanCarlos. Lessthan one-half of the Paez squadron succeeded in getting anto close action, and of those which did, one bark and two schooners, owing to the confined space an which the battle was fought, were driven on shore by the current, in tacking ship, and were abandoned by the crews, As might have been expected, from the disparity of torces and the dis- advanteges of the mode of attack, the Paezistra squedron were unsuccesstul in their attempt to drive the Monagas vessels trom their position. Oa the 23d December, Col. Andrade, after lying almost inactive, investing Maracaibo for five monthe, suddenly determined to raise the siege, whica he did on the night of the 21th, embarking 600 men, intending to proceed to Merida, by way of Zula river. Atthe same time, the squadroa left their anchorage, for the same destination, leaving three veesels abandoned, to deceive the enemy; the garrison at San Carlos were left to be embaiked upon the steamer Qriente, which brought them ot Zulis, the place of disembarkation, at the head of the lake. a From this place, Col. Andrade began hie march for Merida; but being closely pursued, the forces of Castelli finding another detachment awaiting to attack him in front, he concluded to capitulate, although the greater portion of his troops had pre- viously deseited him, partly frem extreme hard- ships endured by them on the road, and the great demoralization which the precipitous retreat and want ot confidence in their Jeader had brougi¢ among them. By the terms of the capitulation, ait officers under the rauk of captain, were obliged to leave the country; the suba!terns and privates were allowed 16 jeiutn home. Since then, how- ever, this treaty has been disavowed by Monagas, wnd those officers who remained in the country, confiding m it, have been seized and imprisoned. The revolution, however, has been by no means quelled, there being still many guerilla parties through difierent parts of Venezuela, and many are but waiting a favorable opportunity to raise the stendard of Paez. The government 1s dail growing unpopular, and must sooner or later fail. The market was rather ler imax Giately after the departure of the last steamer, but a demand set in on the 224 uit, whieh brought it full up, previous to the receipt, om Saturday morning, by telegraph from St. Jobn’s, N B, of the advices by the Canada. There has been no radical falling off during the month just olosed, whioh was confidently predicted by some parties in February, and the consequence naturally flowing from such facts n extension of the arop estimates—is very apparent h ‘The growers at the Atlantic porte, who were the most unwilling of all to meet the marke it season, and at the clone, retained about 100 000 bales on their plantations, avd in their interior depots, show no ds- sire to withhold this year, but are pouring out their crops with a rapidity. which if not soon cuecked, will place their pert ceoelpts at 776 000 bales, which cannot be far from the extreme limit that section has the ability to produce, and conrequently canpotleayemuch excetefor the next year. At New Orleans there i: only a falling off of about 22 600 bales with the re if the Jast season, which roached nearly 1,191,- |. The favorite estimate for that port, at pre- sent, Js 1 060.000 balee—which, I thiak, will at leasc be reached—but it may prove to be. and I candidly cen- feen | thick it will be, rather nearer the mark, than my earlier entire sce which was 1.151,0c0 bales. The crop of that State, this a, is be- lieved to be very largo, and from loeal causes is ua- usually backward. From the foregoing, you will per- that operators here have at last ~brought them: to a crop of 2.600,000 bales. My eatimate of the growth of the different Stutes, which appeared in my eironlar of the 6th February, reviewed above, was 2,610,060 bates, of which. I assigned only 651,000 beles Atlentio States.
