Ihave not been able to Jearn who Hyer has secured as his counsel; but they will have a tough road to travel to prevent Richardson from getting a strong verdict against him. If she proves as fine a vessel as the steamer Isabel, the first and only Ocean steamer builtin this city, which has made eleven voyages to Havana without an accident, the character of our city for the building of this branch of marine architecture will be unrivalled. Capt. Russell, long known as the captain of the steamer Herald, of the Norfolk line, has retired drom the Ilerald, preparatory to taking command of this new vessel. i \ Our office seekers continue in quite a fever, on account of the delay of removals. In the absence of the leading member of a legal bar, much inconvenience is often encountered in tne proceedings of the courts embracing his prac- tice. Such is the case at the present term of the court for this county, which commenced on Mon- day of this week, on account of the absence of Mr. Ewing, who has been transferred from his owa home to the *‘ Home Department” of the Union. Speaking of Mr. Ewing, I may say thit the cor- respondent of the Philadelpnia North American confirms the statement I made 1a my last, that in the first instance it was intended to exclude all the old active party whigs from the cabinet, and especially those composing the Harrison cabinet; but, as the wniter stated, and as it is now under- stood here, an exception was made in favor of Mr. Ewing, for special reasons. What those reasons may be, 1s not clearly known. One thing 1s not disguised by the friends of Mr. Ewing here, viz: that they regard it as an arrangement made at the Tequestof Mr. Clay. Certain it is that Mr. Ewing is the most devoted friend of Mr. Clay’s in the whig party; and there is no doubt that whatever Mr. Clay desired shou'd be made a subject of cabi- net action and discussion, either for the ear, or the uide of action of the President, will be made nown through Mr. Ewing. The probability 13, that the only anxious request made by Mr. Clay, during his vieit to the South, was the appointment of Mr. Ewing as a member of the cabinet. Hitherto the new administration has been re- garded with favor by all parties. A new cabinet was looked for, as a matter of course. A general removal of incumbents is regarded as doubtful ; and, it commenced, will at once break the charm ot the no-party professions, and array an active opposition. — 4 i ‘he principal point of discussion among both whigs and cemocrats, is the potential declaration of the inaugural :— “I shall make honesty, capacity, and fidelity indis. Penrable requirites to the bestowal of office ; and the atsence of either of there shall be deemed suftlvient cause for removal.” The whigs generally regard this as an unfortunate assertion. In every town in the Weét, one or more are aspiring to the postmustership of the place; but their petitions, recommendations, and wivate letters, have all been prepared only in re- erence to their standing in the great Taylor whig party, and without intending or wishing to ar- raign the “honesty, capacity, and fidelity” of the incumbent to be removed. All feel that an indis- crimate removal now will place President Taylor 4M @ position no way calculated to make his ad- ministration popular. The Floods in the South and Wast. The Lowsyille (Ky.)
