On Tuesday last, Mr. Copway, the Ojfbewa accompanied by e friend, visited the Deaf and Dumb Asyium in this eity, under charge of Professor Peet. His visit was paid at an early hour; he breakfasted with “the femily,” and after am examinstion of the mu- seum, workshops, and a walk over the premises, he at- tended the morning services in the chapel. The Indian cbief expressed bimeclf very much gratified with the uitite exercises, and spoke in glowing native elcquenee of the powsr aud solemnity ef spiritus! wor- ship, as carried on by signs. * After morning service, he visited the junior class, under charge of Mr. Edward Peet, where be had an G7 P°r- tunity of witnessing the mute instruction in its more | explained simple forms. Im Mr. Galladet’s class-room he: to the pupils the object of his mission to the United States, and the prospests of civilisation for the Indians. His remarks were repeated in the sign language by Mr. Galladet to his pupils, and elicited from them some highly praiseworthy and intelligent remarks, written out by the pupils on their slates, of which the following ismepecimen. The writer has been upwards of six yeare in the institution :— ‘We are with delight informed by our teacher that this gentleman, Mr. Copway, a Chippewa chief, ms plan in educating the tribes of ember, Congress, we hope, will be nty-seven millions of acres of land fe eet etree Sb en . It is ope that Mr. Copway will succeed in his plan for introducing the tribes of Indians from Canada into the territory west of lowa. After the poem, the Indian chief ad- dressed the young inmates of the Colored Orphan Asylum, in a speech replete with Indian feeling and native’ eloquence; he described his own condition when a wild boy of prairie; his conversion to the Christian faith; the spot where he was born, and the resting place of his dead mother. He was Ilstened to by some two hundred yeung colored orphans, with the most minute attention ; tears glistened in many s youthful eye, and atole silently down many a sable cheek. The chief was moved, jrsiy moved, and the whole Indian outpoured itself before the sable chil- drem of Afrio’s distant clime. He touchingly addressed the managers and friends of the Colored Orphan House. several of Whom were present; and after a cordial leave taking, and a brief visit to the Distributing Reser' Mr. Copway and his party proceeded to the Blind [: atitute, on the Ninth avenue, near Thirty. third street. Mr. Copway proceeded to Wilmington, Del., on ‘Wednesday morning, to attend a convention of his Me- thodist brethren, and will again return to New York in the course of the next week, when his memorial will be aid before the public. ARKivaL or Tum Grear Wrorexn.—The royal mail steamer Great Western, Capt. Wolfe, arrived in the bay on Thursday, with thirty-seven passen- gers, of whom thirteen are for Mobile, and seven mail bags and parcels. The Great Western was in quarantine during the whole time she was at Havana, with the ex- ception of about twelve hours. | ‘The delay in the arrival of this ship, which was due on the 4th, was caused ie alteration ot routes by the recent loss of the Forth. The Med- way, trom Southampton, had to devrate from her eourse, and carry mails trom Bermuda to St. ‘Thomas, and thence to Nassau and Havana, which detained her five days beyond her usual time. The Great Western waited at Havana for the Med- way’s mails and passengers for the Gulf, and the latter returned to Jamaica. The time ot the Med- way’s starting trom Southampton was the 2d of oe and she reached Havana the 4th of arch, The only news reported by the steamer from Havana is, that the quarantine is expected to be abolished on the 15th proximo, on all vessels trom the United States having clean bills of healch, and po sickness on board at the tune of their ar- rival. ‘The following is a list of the passengers of the Great Western for Mobile, as also a list of the Mails brought, for which we are indebted to the civility of the purser of the ship:— Passencens.--Capt W. We regret thata collision took place between the Cora, which brought up the poecagets and mails, and the steamboat Union.— Mobile Register, March 10. Arremrt ro Murper.—One of the boldest at- tempts at robbery ever committed within the li- mits of our tel occurred on the night of the 6th inst., in Upper {anover township. The dwel- ling house ot Mr. Christian Hiestand was entered about midnignt by two men, who were first dis- covered by the two sisters of Mr. Hiestand, in their bed chamber. The females leaped fromtheir bed and endeavored to escape trom the room, when they were both knocked down by the rob- bers, but at length succeeded in getung out of the house, by the window. They were pursued by one ot the ruffians, and one of them again knocked down with a club, when the scoundrel left her lying, and returned to his comrade 1n the house. the other sister succeeded 1n reaching a ney, boring house, where she gave the alarm. In the meanume, Mr. Hiestand awoke, and on comin; from his chamber encountered the robbers, one of whom assailed him with a hickory broom, and the other with a shovel. Mr. Hiestand was, after fa severe struggle, overpowered, bat the resistance with which the burglars met, and the escape of one of the family, frustrated their main design, and when one of the neighbors arrived at the scene with his dog and gun, the scamps had fled without their booty, tor in their hurried search, the money which was in the house escaped them, Mr. Hiestand was found very severely bruised about the heed and face, from the blows he had received, and it was at first feared that he would not survive his injuries. The pursuit of the vil- lains was prompt and successful, They were ar- rested, sod are now lodged in jail, awaiting their trial. They are Germans, and their names are Dauermuiller and Geiger.—Philadelphia Pennsylva- man, March 15.
