MONEY MARKET. Friday, cb. 16.6 P. M. ‘The stook market opened heavy this morning, as far as prices were conceraed, but transac ions were tosome extent, and the bears appear to be more ran:u'ne than ver. One cf the Havre packets is reported as having arrived, und her car. o wills on be entered at the Cus- tom House, when larze p+ymentes on account of duties will be required. Tae bulls were . ratified this morning with the ai noeme: t that a Treasury draft for up- wards of three hundred thousand doll hed been re- ceived and presented fr paysent. Lar.e amounts of specie areon their way hsre from Chagres and Vera Crus ; the arrival of which will / ave a favorable influ- ence upon the money market, aod give tre bulls a tem- porary advantace ; bu any improvementin prices wil; only give the brarsa @der margin for « (a), which they will not be rion of wakin, available. It will, how- caver, give the mo:t cautious bulls an opportunity to Yealise; and as@wall profits are more closely looked to than formerly, it wll not be permitted to pass. Harle u fell off 3g per cent; Long Island, %; Ere Railroad, < ; Pennsylva- nia 6's, 4; Reading Railroad, }; Cumton Co., %; and Farmers’ loan, 1. It $s, doubtless, the intention of the Secretary of the ‘Treasury to keep as large @ balance on deposit in th, government depositorie: possible, for the remainder of bie term of office, so that he hand over to his sucotesore full treasury. This will prevent the an- ticipated relief to the money market, and keep down prices for stocks. The cliques which have hitherto had #0 much ipfluence st Washington, must be bearing go" ‘vernment securities for the purpose of purchasing, knowing full well that ths sub-treasury must disgorge in the course of a few weeks, when a very important advance on current rates must be realized on ail secu- rities—good, bad, and indifferent. This they know; and the screws are, therefore, put upon the market now, to depress prices to the lowest points. Im that report it was stated that the direotors hoped to extend the road to Bing- - amton during the year. Tbet anticipation bas beea coalized, on the 27th of December la: ‘train peseed from Piermoat to Bingb: the 8th of January passenger and frei menced their regular trips. From Binghamton to Corning, a distance of 76 miles, “the work is under contract, to be completed to the latter place by the Ist of December next. The grading of the road between Binghamton and Owego is Axished, and the rails will be Isid as early in the epring as the season will permit, Before the close of the present year the directors ‘intend to rum the cars to Corning. It appsars that there bas been an increase in the revenne from pas, sengers of $8,079 77, und & dvoreass in the revenue from freight, of $25,027 08, showing # reduction in the aggregare reecipte, compared witt last yaar, of $16,047 29. The completion of the York and Harrisburg Railroad will add largely to the business of this line, as it wil! then be the most direct route f:om Pittsburz to Balti. more and Wasbington. " The ‘a ling off im the freighting business of this road, during tte year just closed, compared with the previous year. is assignable to two causes, the most prominent of which was the great reduction in prices of all kinds of agricultural produce, exn-equent upon the absence of the extensive European demand realizod the year previous. The second caure was ‘he damign to the public works of Pennsylvania by freshets, in Oc- tcber, 1847, whioh was not repaired uatil late ia thy spring «f 1848. There have been three important divisions of the canal put under contract, dering the past year, em- clog an area of 06 miles on the main li (from Coal Creek to Newburg.) the estimated aggregate cost of which is set down at $781,719 77, as follows :—From Coal Creek to Terre Haute, 36 miles, whish is expected to be opened fer navigation by May next, the esti- mated cost will amount to $341,290 88; from Terre Haute, south, to Point Commerce, 42 miles. the cost of contiact prices, after come re-'«ttings, is $275 319 39; from Point Commerce, seuth, 17 miles, to Newbury, cost, at contract prices, $165,110. The trustees have sold, during the year, 58,674 05- 100 acres of land, at the Washington Office, in the Vincennes Land Distriet, for the sum of $75,246 92, which, added to the sum of $48,594 97, received in the cfice at Logansport; from collections, chiefly for lands previously sold east aed west of Tippecanoe, makes the total receipts from lands, during the year, $123,796 89; of which $42,695 22 was in canal sorip, and the balance in cash. The quantity fof land belonging to the trust wae stated, in the first report of the trustees, to be 887,- 067 44-100 acres, of which 743,485 72 100 acres wore im the Vincernes Land District, eubjeet to sale at the Washington Land Office, and the residue in the northern part of the State, subject to sale at the Lo’ gavsport Land Office. It appears, under an act of Congress passed 8th May, 1848, the trust is entitied to receive an additional quantity, to make good the quantity rejected in the original selections, 2m account of pre-emption claims, amounting to 35,319 acres; and os farther selection, approximating to what might be caloulated for the ares and sinuosities of th nal. The Wabash and Erie Canal, when finished to the Ohio river, will be 375 miles in length, in Indiana, and Including the eastern end of it, which lies in the State of Ohio, will be 459 miles in length, from Toledo to Evansville—the longest canal in the United States. The cecond instalment to the advance of $300,000, is payable on the first day of February, 1819, and by the order ef the board, the third and final instalment is re} quired to be paid on the first day of July, 1849. INTELLIGENCE BY THE mains, Wasuine ron, Feb. 1, 1849. fl Affatrs in California. _Officral le'ters from Calitornia establish our suspi- Picions ot the dangers ot anarchy from the absence ofan organized government in that terntory. There are come fifty ships at sea, which will arrive there almost simultaneously some four months hence, and when they come to precipitate their aygre- gate of 7,C00 or 8,600 passengers among the gold diggers, if still without law, there will be aa in- sunection. At about the same time, some 5,009 or 6,000 reinforcements will be poured into the territory overiand. No maa can venture to pre- dict the hazards of anarchy which this stat- of things must pro: uce, unless the stroag arm of the government is promptly put in. We are glad to hear that the naval force off the const is to be strengthened. Two or chree thousand voluateers, with permission to dig gold, ia smelt detach- meats, but subject to be called to arms at a mo- ment’s warning, would have a good effect 1a keep- ing the peace; and a detachment at San Fran- cisco, under such provisions a3 to secure then achare inthe dust, would arrest piracies, and the Stealing of ships left without their crews in the harbor; tor when there shall come to be a hua- dred vessels lett in the bay unproteuted, detach- ments of meu tromthe mines wiil be apt to cume down and meke off with them, especially thuse with plenty of provisions and supplies on board Washt «arow, Feb. 13, 1849. Business of Congress—Cali fornia and the Wilmot Proviso— The Camadian Reciprocity Biull--Loy- ally vs. Annexatton——Gossip, §c &c. It may be regarded as a fixed fact, that the pre- fent seasion of Congress will manage to git through a remarkably small amou .t ot basiness by the third day of March next. I: requires no very great mathematician to solve the ;roblem: if in two months and a half, the assembled wis iom of the nation does literally nothing, how much is i: probable they willdo in two weeks, To Louk at the yarda—miles, we should say— f spe -hea published at $16. column in the two pet papers her’, one would imagine that the Senate, at least, wa doing something ; and so it 1s—talking, and that isall. The present system of reporwug ie debates holds out irducemenis to the second and third rate men of the Senate to amplity whatever they may have to say, to an 1nconsiderable leagth, so as to sho* the world what smart fellows they are, whilet the leading men scarcely speak atall. The most trifliog private bi'l uflords an excuse for a “speech,” and by this means, day after day passes, end legislation, to all intents, remains 10 statu quo. : ‘The lute accounts from California, publ’shed in the Herald, show the absolute necessity of esta- blishing a government: in that country ‘or the protection of our citizens there. We read accounts of murders ard atrocities of ail kinds being com- mitted, but our legislators, sooner than give up an lota of an abstract priaciple, wil permit a state of society to exist in those distant provinces, which, if brought to their owa doors, would cause them to recoil with horror. Why not pass a territo- rtal_ bill, omitting the proviso; when you con- tend that slavery, being a municipal regulatien, cannot exist any where unless by legislative en- aciment? Truly, it this is so, and we would like to hearany “free soiler” deny it, it is ia itselt a sufficient guarantoe that slavery will not exist in | California as a State, and cannot as a territory. Itisa perfect absurdity, and yet it is an absurdity which may cost many a n+ble and brave spirit his life. It may be all very well just now, for gen- tlemen to prate about the Wilmot proviso and tree soil, but when the friends of those who have gone the shores of the Pacific, hear ot the deaths of heir fathers, their brothers, and their relatives, by the asgassin’s knite, these peddling politicisns will have a fearful responsibility to auswer. The state of soci-ty in California, even now, is repre- tented as being dreadtul, and those demagogues who, by their acts, refuse to extend the protection ot the United Srates over that country, may find th meelves breugit to a round tura much sooner than they expect, E Itas thought the consideration of the Canadian recipreeity ball will be resumed in the Senate oa Thureday next. It was delayed, we believe, in consequence of the absence ot Mr. Pearce, who intends to answer Mr_D1x’s capital speech in ta- vor of the measure. The opposition to the bill is now nea:ly confined to Southern gentlemen, os: tensibly on the ground of fear of Canadian competi- ticn, but really for fear of its ultimately leading to annexation. Mr. Corwin presented a petition from Ohio, to-day, in favor of the bill. New York aad Uhro are the two States which have most to fear from Canadian competiiioa, and their willingness that the measure should become a law, 18 a sul- ficient answer to the cry of the South, that the competition would be injurious. As to the bill leading to annexation, itis all fudge. The at q ation of Canada to the United States has long regarded, both in England and Canada, as a mere question of tame, and there is n@ doubt that, if England could decently get rid of all her North American provinces to-morrow, she would do so. Under the tree trade rule which now peerells, she derives no benefit whatever from them -on the contrary, they are an expenee to her. The Cana- dians derive now no advantages from their con- nection with a country thousands of miles away. Their produce goes into England precisely on the same footing as the produce of the world. Loyal- ty is merely a feeling held together by interest, and now that it 18 abrogated, the loyalty of the Canadians is fact receding below par. Some ot the Canadian journa's, in endeavoring to hide the growing feeling which is pervading Canad», ask “what would we gain by joining the United States?” Why, gentlemen, you would gain every thing. You would acquire a world wide field tor the ambition of your men of talent. You would have a government at your doors, instead of across the ocean. You would acquire nationality, which you have not now; for the Canadiaa in reality no more 18 a part and parcel of England, English government, or English teelings, than the manin the moon. The teeling, we repeat, is spreading far and wide throughout the ered that nothing but annexation to this Union will ever develope their resources ; and before many eare--perhaps we should say months—we will Lave them knocking at our doors for admission. But we have rather diverged from our subject-- the Reciprocity bill. We understand the Canadian Legislature has passed a reciprocity bill, exactly similar te the one now before Congress; and hus, | also, unanimously adopted a petitton to “her most, | gracious Majesty,” asking that the navigation of the St. Lawrence may be thrown open to the com- merce of the world; and which petition, it issaid, will be granted. But, whether it is or net, should form no r agon for our refusing to permit Canada | to forward her products to the ocean through our | canals and rivers. Itisa simple :atter of dollars | and cents, showinga he balance in our favor. Sir George Simpson, the Governor of the Hud- son Bay Company, 18 now here, for the purpose of pressing on the attention of Congress the sale of the property owned by the company in Oregon, within our limits. Wedo not understand the me- rits of the cage very clearly; but it was stated last ercion that the price demanded by the company | was exorbitant, the property being almost worth- less, consisting of old warehouses, which had been abandoned. fi this be so, we doubt if Sir George wil) gain by his visit here. As nothing 18 known regarding General Taylor’s olicy or his cabinet, definitely, we need not azard a guess on the matter—particularly as the old gentleman will be here so soon, and tell us all about it himeelf. We may, however, give a.piece of gossip which has something defiaite im it. 18 the etiquette, it appears, tor the President elect, upon hie arrival here, to call upon the Presideat’s lady. In case General Taylor should see fit’to follow this custom, it 18 understood Mrs. Polk will give him a dinner party for his edifivation--a sort of reunion, at which the political hatchet will Le buried in the sparkliog glass of—cold water, as the General 1s a temperance 1 Wasuinorton, Feb. 14, 1849, The Cownting of the Votes for President and Vice President--The Branch Mint. Mr. Cocke made an ineffectu tl attempt | to admit the ladies to seats om the floor of the Houee ; Mr. Atkinson objected, saying that that wasnota suitable place forthem. When the Vice President annouue- ed that Zaehary Taylor was elected President, and Millard Fillmore Vice President, there was no demonstration of joy or otherwise. It was a matter of course, and, as Mr. Sawyer said, the re- sult was admitted before the votes were counted.
