From conversation with said person, we learned that a letter had been received by Julia’s mother, stating that the report of an “engagement” between her daughter and the Honorable gentieman from Virginia, was quite unfounded. It originated from the fac; of the Honorable [oedema having been enamored with Mies Dean’s acting in Was! ton city, and Paving followed her to Baltimore and there hav- as obtained an introduction, gallanted & few through the city. ‘The obsei took it for ed that a“ ” hi pretensio: ith “John Tyler” pe e ‘besutifal actress Botts returned to Washington city, and Miss De writes to her mama tbat there is not a word of truth in the telegraphic reports of her marriage. Distin and Supertor Court: Before Judge Sandferd Gottleb Bollett, vs, Harlow E, Si’ , John Hook, and several others.—This was an action ior aesault and bat- tery and falee imprisonment. it sppeared that the plaintiff, who is a bair-dresser by trade, went from bis residence on the evening of the 16th of February, 1847, to a tavern to prcoure asegar. Sill and others of the defendants were there when he arrived; the parties were all drinking ; a diffioulty arose between Sul aod plaintiff in regard tos ae due by the former to plain- tiff, for leeches. Plaintiff asserted that he owed him two dollars, while Sill insisted that it was not so much. Sill, however, laid down a $2 bill to pay for the drinks, and it seems the Plaintiff took it up, and walked away with it. They iatesediately, followed him, orying out ttop thief; im the pursuit they met three officers, who accompanied them until they overtook him, at his house; they then arrested him, and brought him to the Eesex Market Police Office, whereghe was detained for the night, and was next morning brought before Justice Ketcham. Bills of indictment were afterwards laid befere the Grand Jury, who threw them out. The plaintiff cought to recover damages for a constructive arnault and battery, and for imprisonment in the ste- tion house during the ight of the 16th ‘The defenc ubey heard the cry of stop thief, allied upon by Sill and Hook to arrest the plaintiff, that they did so in discharge of their duty as police officers. The jury or? verdict fer the plaintiff against Hook, for $60: Sill, $30; against Edwards and Herbert, $5 each, and found a verdict for the other defendants, against the plaintiff. Raisier C. Monday, Feb. 12-6 P. M. There was considerable excitement to-dey in the oteck market, notwithstanding the disagreeable, stormy weather, and quotations for all securities advanced. Harlem went up % per cent, Long Island \, Canton Company 1, Farmers’ Loan X, Erle Railroad , Morris Canal 3, Pennsylvania fives 13;, Indiana 1}, United States sixes, 1867, 13;. The sales werejlarge, the im- provement in prices having brought out a great deal of stock. The sellers are principally strong operators, and the purchasers the weakest partiesin the street, It is the opinion of many, that funtiljjthere isa favorable ehange in the money market, stocks cannot advance much, and that the steady drain of specie from our banks will annul the effect of the favorable news from Europe. This, however, can only be temporery. The European accounts show that a reaction has taken place in the financial and commeroial affairs of Europe; that activity prevails in the manufacturing districts; and that the basis of the improvement is sound and substantial. The revulsion has spent its force; it has prostrated everything in its course that was weak or much exposed, and purged the commercial! world of the most corrupt system of credits that ever existed. Those who passed through the ordeal of that revulsion, must have strength to sustain themeelves, of all confidence, has ne doubt taught them a lesson that will be of vast service hereafter. We have no doubt the improvement reported by the steamer Ni- agara will be permanent. Money has been so abun- dant for such » length of time in London, and the rate of interest bad become reduced to such « low point, that a forward movement in prices of, merchandise generally, could not be much longer resisted. The in- activity and quiet which had existed so long in the commercial world, could not continue in the faco of a Plethora in the momey market, and the absence of spy important or serious difficulty in the political world. We therefore look upon the re-action ao being perfectly legitimate; one founded upon the natural laws of tra increase in demand for consumption, and the absence of a sufficient sup- ply of the staple articles of manufacture. This is the basis of the improvement, and there was every indica- tion, at the latest dates, not only of its permanency, but cf its progress, The effect of thi ate of things abroad, upon com- mercial affairs in this country, must be of the most favorable character. The condition of our money markets may, for a time, arrest any impertant improve- ment im prices for our staple products, but it must come; {it may be deferred, buts favorable changein commercial matters is inevitable. When Great Bri- tain experiences any disaster in her commeroial move- ments, we are sure to feel it; and it is equally certain that we shall feel the effect equally great of any favor- able movement in her commeroial affairs. We find in England the best oustomers for our most important articles of export, and her capitalists are rapidly ab- sorbing an immense amount of our public securit! Prices for these, therefore, in a great degree, depend upom her prosperity, and whatever tends to inflate them, tends directly to benefit us. The Independent Treasury system comes in for a great share of abuse from many stock speculators of ‘Wall street; but the mere fact that it is abused in such quarters is the best evidence in the world of its value and importance in checking eny undue speculation, apy dangerous inflation in oredit, or artificial expan- sion of prices. It is, even under the administration of Secretary Walker, a kind of balance wheel {a financial affairs, and exercises those checks which have such 6 wholesome influence upon the movements ofjspecula- tors. We would like to see this measure strictly en- forced, its most rigid provisions closely adhered to, that its actual defects may be more clearly seen, and. pro- perly modified. No one can deny that it has imper- nd many alterations will be necessary before wer all the purpores required. Even in its present form, \t is merely a bugbear, which frightens Vimid speculators, as though they were so many big boys.
