Bier, Sen, See ‘The mails of the steamship America will cleseat the Pest Odice in this city at half-past twe o’clock this afterneon, end at other places at half past three o’clook: ‘The steamer leaves Boston to. morrow noon. ‘The Weekly Herald, printed in French and English, for ciroulation in Europe, will be published at 120’clock to-day. It will contaim the recent nows from the California gold regions; the opening of the Canadian Pariiemert, with the Gov General's speech, and all the other interesting news of the week { The postage on a single letter from sny part of the United States, toany part of Great Britain, or the British dominions in general, is 24 eonts, This may be pre-paid or not. Ifpre-paid, the receiver in Great Britain pay postage. Letters to the continent, by English vessels, are pre-paid cents. Two cents aust be pre paid on all newspayers fer Europe. The reason why the mails are closed at the Post Office at so early an hour, arises from the difficulty of the Pest Office clerks understanding the intricacies of 0 sudden a departure from the old system. The greatest excitement prevailed in all parts of the oity to-day, in consequence of the publication of later.and most important intelligence from California, Telative to the extent and richness of the gold mines of that country. In Wull street it was most intense, and the fever rages with renewed vigor. We have neyer, before seen anything like it. Every one was talking-about the letter published in the Herald; and ‘such was the excitement, that it had a» tendency to -oheok busi! transactions, to seme extent. The ‘brokers hardly knew what to make of the accounts re- seived—they want tosee the gold, nothing short of that will satisfy that class of speculators. If they will wait patiently » few weeks, there will be no scarcity of the precious metals. We kave had no arrival yet at Panama direct from San Francisco, and there has, therefore, been no opportunity to make shipments to this or any other American Atlantic port. As soon as the line of steamers on the Pacific commence run- ming, the gold willcome slong fast enough to satisfy the most voracious. I find, as I told you before, that the General is a stronger whig than I had any idea of, He says that the democratic party is the old federal party. In his intercourse with his fellow citizens he is, unquestionably, the most thoroughly democratia public man I have yet seen in the country. He hates all parade and ceremony, and a police officer of New York puts on vastly more dignity. His manner is very winning, being wohlly fdevoid of aflectation. Now for his political opinions. He dixcountenances altogether the annexation ot Cuba; and I verily believe af he could give baok. California and New Mexico he would. He looks upon the acquisition of those countries as a rob- bery. It negotiations are pending when he comes into office, tor the purchase of Cuba, he will break them off, if it can be done with any show of decency. He is not tor purchasing Cuba, ex- cept in the last extremity, and that last pxiremiy. being the well authenticated efforts of the Englisl pvernment to obtain possession of the island. he occurrence of such a contingency he wholly Tejects a8 improbable and almostimpossible; as he believes England is not and cannot be in a position to needlessly affiont this nation, The tanfl, he thinks, should be partially modi- fied in some of the details which have been point- ed out to him as wanting emendation. But he does not tavor the resutution of the tariff of 1842. He attaches great importance to the slavery ques- ton, believing that the popular mind of the Ni is more strongly agitated with the subject than it really is.
