Sunday, January 31—6 P.M. ‘The most important and astounding intelligence hich has beem received ‘within the presunt centary, jame to hand late last.evening—intelligence that will ve @ greater effect upon the financial and commer- ‘ial movements of the world than any we have ever re- eived. The advices froarCalifornia, ap tv the léth of jovember—nearly one month later than those pre- ously received—which we publish at length in another tons as will remove every doubt which has been en- ined, and give immense impetus to the move- ents of emigrants. The letter whichwe pablish to- y, is from a source that entities it to the highest onfidence; and we have ne doubt, from the charecter ifthe writer, that he has been very cautious in his tements, aid has not told half of what he has seen. e fect that ploces of pure gold, twenty-two nd twenty-four carats fine, weighiog sixteen unds, have been found, may seem beyond “ef; but we Bave mo more adoudt of it thea at the sumi’rises and sets. Haviag implicit coaf- ne in our source of information, we are disposed to lace reliance upom every statement made. Accounts recently received from the Pacific, report jovements im gold and gold dust, caloulated to enthen the belief previously entertained. Several eceels had arrived at Mazatian, from California, with old, some of which had been assayed, aad tound to yerage 21 carats, The British steamer Pandora had kem $280,000 worth ef this gold to Panam, to be sent cross the isthmus to Chagres, and by the mail steamer Southampton, England. The Fal+om brings accounts {the British steamer. Tay having left Cuagres, for poutbampton, with one million of dollars in gold ani ‘old dust, most of which was no doudt from California, Advices from Valparaiso to the 28th of Ootober, o ‘hat $100,000 of gold dust bad arrived from Califoraia, There statements show thet the immense emouat of old gathered in California js alrvady fladiag its way yother parts of the world; end they show tnat the ories received from the gold mines are by no eas exaggerated. It is true that we bave not yet reeelved much gold or gold dust here; but it enough for out people to know that the supply ia slifornia is jnexhaustible—that the soil fs literally of it. Of this there oan be uo further doubt, the idence being 90 conclusive that those who conten- pute emigrating need be under no apprehension that gold will be all gone bsiore they arrive, Tav letest younts from Monterey state thas people were coming ‘mail parts of the Pacific coast, and from the $ead- h Ielands. There will be enough for all; but it is an. shaving been satiefactorily settiod that tue accounts | Vl California, relative to gold, are no flotion, itis wsty difficult to tell how much gold fa enough for any | 'y important to knew what will be the effect of this mense supply of precious moti ‘this enormous | ession to the specie currency of the world. We have | iready seon the effect of the abundaaes ef goid ia San pon prices for every apecios of property; we | ve seen an advanoe of three, four and dve baadred per | nt inthe market value of provisions, produce, aod | snufactures of every kind, and s tremsadvus in reaseintbe domand for censumption. Chis is the stural effect of such @ sudden inorease in the supply } gold or silver, and would be realized a soon among wages, who could not trace cause to effet, az in any ised community. What has already taken piace ) California, must soon spread over the world ; but as extends the expansion will become lessvaed; or we ht sey, the inflation of prices will be less prrcep: vie, until they will ultimately booome uniform ead ‘led down upon a permanent basis. As the ripples on thi Produced by thw falling of « paddle, ‘tad and enlarge in circamference, antil they are upon the surface of the surrounding element, so th pf such an immense increase of wasith til lost sight of in the commurcial operations he world. Asthe gold of Ualiforaia becomes dis nteg, and enters into ‘all the ramifivations of o lepartments of industry, priews mast reoede thefirst points and the inflation be reduced; this mit we can anticipate, in the event of the supply of | solous metals reaching & certain point; out if the | oply is inexhaustibie—if the prodaot amoants to hua- sd0.of millions of dollars annually -it will be m- widle to follow the course of prises with say degree gooursey. A certain jount of gold dug out of earth, would soon be absorbed im the aggregate | oulation, and the effect upon prices woald be but ite eurfice, amd be lost among those which nave ceded it; but it is likely to be an entire nex of eith, the aves of which will becoatinasily fowviag Gpon us, deluging ue with great depts aad ecteat, imagina‘ton ts lost in contempleting the rerait Jo give same idea of the provabie effet of shis ta. Taking the speci: deposit ‘m benk asthe basis of the paper currency, we must consider it iamoveable, any farther « jecessary to displace 00 much paper. The actual cireulation of money and its representatives, in the world, so fer as we can arrive at it, is ten dred and thirty millions of dollars, and that amount suffices to carry om the entire commerce of the world. Leaving out of the calculation the amount of gold snd silverin benk, end taking its representative, which exceeds thy depo- aite more than two hundred millions of dollars, and we havean aggregate as above. Theinorease in the ciroa- Jation of gold and silver growing out of the wonderful iscoveries in California, must have an immense ef- fect uponthe currency. Every million of dollars added to the Aeposite in the banks, will add at least one and + half millions to the amount of paper issues. A portion of the new supply of gold will go into ofroulation, aa1 the currency will become more expanded by the process of issuing @ representative of coin, than by the actual inerease in the precious metals. In the event of the mines of Califormia producing one-half as much as estimated, it will be seen taat the amount of gold in citealation will be doubled withia the n-xt ten years. Fifty millions of dollars in gold added to the ourrency of the world in eacf year, will create a revolution in financial and commercial affairs greater than ever before experienced. At first there will be a great derangement in the operations of trade, and fore time everyting will be at loose ends, The rapid inflation in pric+s, and th publioand private oredite, will || speoulation in every species of property, and we may look for greater activity in every bi then the oldest inhabitant ever imagined. The ad- vance im prices will not be by any means confined to the latitude and longitude of California, or the gold mines, or to merchandise sent to that section of the world for sale, but it will be universal—it will spread to the uttermost bounds of the earth. Tho gold, as fast as it is dug out of the rocks and the earth, will pars into the cbamnels of trade, and, like water, find its own level. It makes vory little difference what course it takes from San Francisco and Monterey—it will ultimately settle down in all the great markets of the werld. Our growth d prosperity from previous causes have been wonderful; but we have.in the discove- ry of this El Dorado, the means of progress that will in Joes than a quarter of a century make New York the first commercial city om the face of the globe. We have around us the resources of wealth to an immense extent. Our agricultural and manufacturing inte- Fests will receive an impetus which must at once place them in the highest rank. We have almost a new world to supply, at least for atime, with all the luxu- ties and many of the mecessaries of life; every branch of industry will immediately be brought into requisi- tion; our ship yards, our forges, our looms, everything, will be actively employed to meet the demand from this source. Our ships will be freighted with out products, sent round to the Pacific, Rever re- turn; they will there forn the commercial ma- rine of thet ses, and be used in transporting the newly discovered wealth to all those countries, giving renewed impetus to industry by every mo¥%- ment. Population will increase, consumption will in- crease, requiring increased produetion, not only of the necessaries, but of the luxuries of life, and for a long perion tha greatest prosperity will apparently exlst. That a portion or this atate of things will be artificial, even in the face of the most envrmeus inorease in the supply of gold, no one can fora moment doubt. ore- its will increase far beyond the most extravagant anti- cipations, and prices will reach points hardly hereto fore dreamed of. Previous speculations will be a mere begatelle compared with it, and the bubble will frally burst from too much expansion. We may then look for s contraction in the paper currency, and a depre- ciation im the value of the precious motals Prices for property and industry may not find their former level, but the reduced value of the circulating medium will annul all artificial advantages, and form a new basis or the regulation of prices. Weshall have tegive more money for the same quantity; but money will be more abundant and: more easily obtained. There will be more Property to meve, and more money will be required to move it, It would be well for all to bear in mind during the enormous inflation im everythin; connected with commercial matters, that a collepse is sure te follow, no matter what the basis of the expansion is, and take in sail before there are any indications of the approaching squall. On Saturday night, too late, however, for publi- cation on Sunday, we received intelligence from California, extending to as late as the 16th of No- vember, being three weeks later information than what was previously received from that quarter. We give it at length to-day. Our correspondence is dated at Monterey, the 16th November. It came through Mexico to Vera Cruz, and reached New Orleans by the schooner W. E. Collis, Captain Jarvis, which vessel arrived there on the 11th instant, whence «we received it by mail in this city. We believe it is the latest correspondence of the kind that has been received in the United States, with the exception, perhaps, of private intelligence that may be in the possession of some of the members of the government. We also believe that it will be published in the Herald exclusively. Annexed will be found the long accounts given by our correspondent. This gentleman is well qualt- fied to describe the gold movements 12 Californi He has resided in that region since the year 1832, the most of the time in a public capacity, and hes been at the gold region for weeks at atime. He “was the first who gave us, last summer, a state- ment of those vast discoveries, and he organized several commercial expeditions from this city te San Francisco, which will, probably, yield a mil- lion of dollars of profit. Those expeditions were commenced about the middle or latfer part of last summer. It will be seen, from his description of matters, annexed hereto, that the rumors hereto- ore circulated in connection with the government officers in California, are not altogether without foundation. We have also received a private and confiden- tial letter, which contains intelligence so extraordi- nary, and, we may say, so astounding, concerning the go'd regions, that we forbear giving it to the public at this time, lest they would not credit it, and might only laugh at us for our pains, and accuse us of atrempting to hoax and deceive the publie. According to those accounts, the extent of the gold region on the San Joaquim and Sacramente Tivers, extends a distanee of eight hundred miles in length, by one hundred in width. It embraces } not only gold, but quicksilver in almost equal abun- 4 dance, particuiarly on the San Joaquim. It is es- timated that a small population, actively engaged 1m mining operations in that region, could export one hundred millions of dollars in gold every year; and if this be so, an additional population mught increase that amount to two or three huadred mil- lions: annually, and thereby, in a comparatively short time, completely upset the specie currency of the whole civilized world. This is not fancy. Thousands and thousands of people from the islands in the Pacific, from Mexi- co, Peru, Oregon, and as far as China and the East Iudies, as soon as they learn of those diggings, will crowd to California. There can be no doubt that the detachments of American troops in Mon- terey and San Francisco, from Col. Mason down, will return to the United States, perfectly toaded with pure gold. It seems that Colonel Mason has been three times in the diggings, and that all his oflicers and men are with him—at one time at one place, and at another time in another--and that Captain Marcy, and a few others, are left to occu- py head quarters, and share in the spoils, at a rea- sonable time afterwards. As cr as this goes, it would seem, the rumored stories in this city, rela- tive to Captain Marcy, and: ther officers in that re~ gion, are not far from the (ruth. But we cannot tell more of the private informa- tion which we have r: ceived by thie despateh. It would hardly be believed. Annexed will be found our public corresp ndence, which we have no doubt will be read with great interest, for itis quietly and soberly written, and much inside the trath. [Correspondence of the New York Herald } Monrerxy, Catirorntia, Nov. 16, 1848. Jamzs G. Bennett, Esq., Eprtor New Yorx Heraup— ‘We can now call ourselves citizens of the Uni- ted States. We have now only to go” by law, as we formerly went by custom—that is, whea Con- grese gives us a government and code. The old | foreign residents o' Calitornia, having done very ; Wellten or twenty years, without law, care bu; very little whether Congress pays early or late at tention to the subject. Those who have emigrated from the Atlantic States within the tast three or four years, deem the subject an important one; I only call it difficult. The carrying out a code of inwe, under existing circumstances, 1s far from being an easy task. The general government may appoint governors, secretaries, and other public functionaries; and judges, marshals, collectors, &c., may accept offices with salaries of $3,000 or $4,000 per annum; but how they are to obtain their petty officers, at half these sums, remains to be seen. The pay of a member of Congress will be accepted here by those alone who do not knew | enough to better themselves. Mechanics cannew get $10 to $16 per diem; laburers on the wharts or elsewhere, $5 to $10; clerks and storekeepers $1,000 to $3,000 per annum; some engage to keep store dering their pleasure at $8 per day, or 1 te 14 Ibe of gold per month; cooks and stewards $00 ' to $100 per month. In fact, labor of every desorip- tion commands exorbitant prices. | My previeus information to you I merely tor- waded to your office to open tne way to the futare belief of your many readers. [ had not much ex- pectation of being believed. The idea of moua-, tains of quicksilver only waiting the ingenu ty of man to make them pour forth as a stream—ot rivers, whese bottoms and buaks are of gould, is rather too much to play upon the credulity ot New Yorkers or Yankees. I suppose my story passed as an enlarged edition of the Arabian Nights, im- proved and adapted to Calitornia. Whether you or your readers took the tale for ficton or truth, I know not. Your last paper that has reached us 18 of April. This I know—the Sandwich Islands, Oregon, and Lower California, are fast parting with their inhabitants, ull bound for this coast, and thence to the great * placer” of the Sacramento Valley, where the digging and washing of one man that dues not produce one hundred troy ounces of gold, 23 carats, trom the ize of a half spangle to one pound in one mouth, sew the digger to * prospecting,” ¢.¢., looking for better grounds.
