It will be at least | 0 yan ft six weeks from this before one of the regular line of steamers will arrive at Panama from San Francisco, ‘and we cannot look for any shipments of consequence except by that conveyance. The Crescent City is nearly due at this port from Chagres; she may bring later advices from California, received at Panama by some transient vee! In the course of the debate in the Senate, on the ap- pointment of » committee to examine into the causes of the failure of the Canal Bank of Albany, it was stated that the aspect of its resources had materially changed for the better since ihe receiver made his re- |. Instead of being insufficient, as was at first eup- posed, te redeom the circulation, it now appeared that, in addition to that, about forty or fifty per cent on the -deposites would be paid. The annexed statement exhibits the quantity, in tons, of anthracite coal sent to market from the dif. ferent regions im Pennsylvania, in each year, from the commencement of the trade, 1820 to 1848, both inolu- sive :— Antunacite Coat Trane or Pennsrivanta, Schuyl Little Lehigh Other —Aggre- ki regions, “gute. Ay. eee "ie several years after the commencement of ‘the trade, the receipts were only from the Lehigh region, and, until after 1828, no supplies were received from any other than that and the Schuy.kill sec. tion. Since that time, the receipts from the Schuyl- Kill region have exceeded all others; and during the past four years, more than one-balf of the aggregate supply bas been received from that section of the State. Heretofore, the anthracite coal has been used for domestic purpores of all kinds, and for almost every variety of machinery where steam was the pro” pelling power, We bave, it is true, imported largely of the bituminous kinda; but their ure bas been confined principally to dwelling houses, for grates.&c. The exten- sion of internal improvements, in the shape of railroads and canals, into the most out of the way aud most re- mote seotions of the country, has brou. ht into requi- sition varieties of coals of the greatest value, and dif- ferent from those which have heretofore been in gene- raluse. It is exceedingly fortunate that these internal improvements have been extended at a time when our ocean steam navigation has taken such rapid strides, It isa curious coincidence that facilities for the favor- able extension of ocean steam navigation should be drawn, for the firet time, from our soil, atatime when such extensive arrangements were making for the con- struction of an ocean steam marine. Anthracite ooal bas never been used to any extent in moveable steam engines. Jt is not adapted to that | kind of consumption; and immenre sums of money have been wasted inexperiments. [t answers very well for stationary engines, and for stationary consump. tion of all kinds. A very valuable and useful report was made to Congress sometime since by Professor Johnson, of experiments made with the the different kinds of coal with a stationary apparatus, built and prepared for the purpose, and s0 arranged as to afford any required amount of draft. The result of these ex- periments settled conclusively that anthracite coal, which is the most difficult of ignition, cannot be used om board of steamships without the aid of powerful plowers; and so far as attempts have been made to use it om railroads, they have provedjoomplete failures. Coals porsessing the most speedy powers of ignition and the bighest evaporative power, must, of course, be preferred for steamships, for locomotives, and for all other moveable engines; provided these qualifications | can be broaght into useful application through the or- dinary atmospheric influences. For the purpose of showing the relative value of the Ufferent varieties of coal, eo far as regards the properties necessary for successful employment in our steam marine, we annex a compatative statement from the report alluded to above:— Ovrictas, ANALYSIS OF ANTHRACITE AND Brrvmtvous Coat, Fo gia $8 | FI “3 te BRE ok GE “si a ad 2 835, 7 90 91 mS 12.68 1000 12.3L ot 4.75 908, M75 -_ 35.83 809 39.95 73 80 UT | i 3.98 792 | 82.49 715 636 It will be seen, oa reference to the above table, that the anthracite contains a very small quantity of bitu- men; that the semi-bituminous contains sbout tour times as much as the anthracite, and the bitumizous too great amount of volatile tter, causing it to cement in large masses. It is, therefore, too light to be used economically, except for very limited purposes It will thus be seen that where the greatest heat is required, the most natural and the most speedy ign! tion, the eemi-bituminous is decidedly superior to all others. In order to consume the anthracite coal on board our steamers, it is necessary to employ extra engines, to oreate artificial currents of air, to supply a deficiency in {oflammable matter, and in doiag so, Jarge portion of the heat is lost by being forced through the flues with too great velocity, and the boiler furnace bars, Ke , are scon destroyed. The more pow. erful these engines, and the greater the current of air, the more rapid the consumption of coal Itis estimated that at least twenty-five per cent of the aggregate | consumption are lost by the effect of the blowing | engines. taking of equal portions of the antiracite and bitu- minous quailties.) easily ignites The Cumberland is extensively used by our Ocean Steam Navigation Com- pany, and those of Europe whose versels touch at out ports, and by some of our most extensive raiiroxd com- panies, in their locomotives This cosi corresponds The semt-bituminous, (a description par. | ™ ‘ ment ani all the steamship compante,’ of the United balf a dozen steamship companies have beon rested in this country, most of which have their steam ** un activ+«peration; and im the course of a few years ¥° shall have dozens of these companies where we now Bave one. It is therefore of the utmost importance trot it should be determined at once, whieh, of all our varieties of coals, is the best adapted to that extensive service. So far, the leading variety ef the semi-bita- minous kind is much superior to all others; asthe sup- ply is inexhaustible, and located om the line of the Cumberland Canal and Baltimore and Ohio Qailroad, {t i* accessible as the Schuylkill, by means of thej Reading Railread and the Schuylkill Canal, ard be brought to market at very eoono- mical rates. The importance of this species of coal will be more generally understood when it is known that, for the purposes named, one ton is equal to more than two cords of wood, which makes ita cheaper and more economical fuel to use, Stock Excha ADVERTISEMENTS RENEWED EVERY MORNING, WANTS.
