‘The Gold tn California, [From the Wasbingtos Union } To gratify the public curtosity, we lay before our Beaders en additional and interesting report from the mint at Philadeipbia :— Mint oF THe Unirep States, } ‘ipbia, Deo. 27, 1648. 1 bave already bed the honor of answe.ing ia part the questions asked in your letter of the 8th in- Btant. regarding the specimens of gold, platios, and @ipneber. from Caiifornia. which you sent to the miat ol Cooper have the isfaction of eating further information in the subj*iaed repurte presen'+d to me by Messrs. J. R. Eckfeldt and m. EB Du Bois, ers of the mint, aad Professor mes C Booth, s distinguished chemist of thiscity. ‘The reports regarding the gold confirm the state- already made, sod add many other interesting ‘The reports upon the quality of the cinnabar are very Satisfactory. tbe rpecimens yielding nearly one-toird Of their weight in quicksilver. By consulting authori- ties on the subject, it appears that the mines of Alma- @en, in Spain, yield on the average ten per cent of ‘at Idris, ores containi Of this discovery in California, the nearners of a constant and absorbing Taf quantities of mercury being required slgamation of silver or: zizo, where, 20 mines of mercury have been found. Very respectfully, gs? faithfal servant, M. PATTERSON, Direotor. Hon. W. L. Mancr, Seoretary of War. Prrraperenta, Doo 19, 1848, Dean Sin:—The mercurial ore irom California, which You banded to me, contains the red sulphuret of mer- ry in @ quartznse gt aartz, othe specimen ; 60 of the suipburet quarts ; the other yellow. deh, and consisting of the suiphuret of mero ad quarts and colored yellowish by a considerabie qui tty of a mixture Of proto-carbonate and hydrated oxide of iron. ‘Whe red ore contains 33 35 per ot. of metallis meroury. The yellow do. 1660 do. do. ‘There is alto associated with the yellow ore a small smount of bituminous matter, which is frequently found with ores of mercury, Respectfully yours, JAS. C. BOOTH, Dr. R. M. ratrenson, U. 8. Mint, Poilada. Assay Orrice, United States Mint, December 26, 1845 Sir: The specimen of native cinnaber from Caliior- nia, forwarded to the mint by the secretary of War, has been examined here as to its yield in metallic Mercury. ‘Tuking @ transverse section of the ore, which included the red, white, aud brown layers, the red predominating, there was obtained, by thy process Of distil/ation, thirty-ooe percent of mercury The portion treated might be considered as @ favorable ‘working specimen. Seme inquiries which were made in respect to the substances sccompuning the gold of California may here bereplied to. First, as to the platinum This metal is evidently prevent, and may be seen with the Baked eye amongst the spang’er of gold, and in a eimi- larform. Avmall quantity (wbout four grains in Weight) was forwarded from the War Department, and ‘was found to be of the specific gravity eighteea; b ing, of course, debased somewhat by the intimate mix- ture of miner.1 matter not removable by washing — We have it determined accurately what amount of this wnetal appears with the gold deposited for coin- age Owing partly to its known iutractability in the furnace, avd party to its crude condition, it is scarce- Jy at all fured with the gold, but isto be seen, after Melting in its original form, dotted upon the gur- face of the gold bars. What does enter into combina: tion with the gold is scarcely appreciable, and dovs Rot disturb the areay, or deteriorate the metal for eoining or manufacturing purposes; and this was a material point cfinquiry. Taking it altogether, whe- ther fured or not, our impression ia, that it extsta 1p but small relative quantity, and will not be worth seeking after for its own sake, Next, as to other alloying metals, it may bo said that, Practically, the only [alloy of this gold is silver, of ‘which we find. on the average, 104 parts ina thousand. The gold yielding 04 there is a remainder of two thovrandths, which is nearly or entirely copper. A trace of iridium was manifest upon some of cor- ‘ets, but we have reason to belie persed with gold, by the War Department. Of this there were two parcels. The first, hing in all about 834 penpywelghts, was first reduced in bulx by removing the grains of magnetic iron, and then subdjvoted to ca- in the emall way. The result of Gold seseceseesseess 9.8parts in a thousand. Silver, combined with the BM i cettecccs LAY, te Protoxide ofiron(magnetic) 697.2 “ hea Residue, consisting chiefly ef peroxide of iron, . sols % & 1 00 ‘This would be equal to 68 4s ‘7 07. grains of gold of native fineness, in # pound avoirdupois of the sand. ‘The other parce) was treated in two ways, both dif- fering from the former. First, we took a specific quaa- tity, weighed by milligrammes, (equal to about 1134 penny weights.) and having cleanged it by the magnet, subjected the remainder to a very thorough amaige- mation. The amount of fine gold obtained was 12.44 _— thourand Again, the same quantity of r ‘was iboroughbly washed, (more time being taken t than would be likely to pay in a large operation,) there revulted 1265 parte of fine gold per thousand. To give cupeilation its due credit, we must remark that this recond parce! was evidently th t to the eye. The specific gravity of the black sand, without gold, is 4.4, nearly the same as that of simple mag- metic iron. How fer these results may be interesting to the pub- Me, or important to the miner, it is not easy to say. If it were the true state of the care that there was no- thing to do but to shovel vp an auriferous sand, which, by proper treatment, would yiald one thousand vo ‘twelve hundred dollare a bushel, this would, indeed, be a8 startling a dirclosure as any which has emanated from Cahtornian soil. But had reason to be- Neve, in reference to this matter, is confirmed by an official letter of Captain Folsom, published in tl Wa Union of the 23d instant, from which we deg to extract afew lines :— + The fine gold is ound on the lower portion! etreame, and is extracted from the earth by me: warbipg in commen tin pans. and vessels of every kind which can be substituted for them. ‘The finest ion, # rmelting fine gold, or s e rtions of the earth are removed by washing, and a | nd of gyratory motion of the pan; the gravel is taken out with the hand. andthe gold is lett ia the ‘Veseel with a kind of black, ferruginous sand, not un- Hine that used in writing. The residue (gold and sand is'then left upon s board or cloth to dry, when the san As bi ff with 2 common bellows or the meuth, while the greater specific grevity of the gold causes it to re- main bebind.” It thus sppears that the obtaining of this rich sand 4s almost the last of concentric operations; and that our experiments upon it, though curious and of value aa far as they go, afford no definite indication of the richness of the mining ground, since it does not appear how many panfols or bushels of the original earth must have been wrought upon to obtain a given quantity of this black send Moreover. it is well known that no mode of treatment, however skilful ebled guld-miners to mal a large operation, to tbe result obtained b: te aseay—that is, not without its costing more than it ‘would be worth. ‘There are s0 wany conditions to be weighe ifference of composition in layers or masses of the sapd.even at sbort intervals of space, and such a eboice in the adaptation of extracting processer, that 320 opinion rhould be ventured from slight materials as | tothe f productiveness or the probable mency RT the mining interest in that remark gion. ith t rerpect, your faithfal servants, ma ree COB rf ECKFELDT, Assayer. ‘WM. TROUBLE BETWEEN THR INDIANS AND THR OopEN Company.— We seem to be on the verge, not of an anti-rent nor Mexican, but of an Indian and Ogden Land Company war. The treaty between ihe latter and the Seneca Nation of Ind stipulates that the improvements of each Indian shall be separately sur- ‘veyed aud appraiced, so that each may receive a just tm ofthe impsovement money, As the Tona- ‘wanda Indians never assented to the terms of the tre: ty, they. of course, had no desire to have tueir im- provemerts appraised. Attempts have heretofore been mpade to appraise them, but without success, or at least has been wade that met the approbation of PI came on with the intention of surveying ing the improvements.
