This enormous contraction in the banking movement of Massaon: setts has created « vast deal of embarrasmentamong the commercial classes of that section of the country d caused a great many failures. Our banking in- stitutions and capitalists have aided the merchants of Boston, and no doubt prevented many houses from suspending. The mercantile clasres of our Eastern neighbor, have, in their efforts to compete with this city for the Western trade, gone beyond thoir depth d we have been called upon to extend a helping hand, and save them from the ruin that stared so many of them in the face. The course pursued by the banks of Massachusetts, has, no doubt, been the cause, to a certain extent, of the diMoulties which the merchants of Boston have experienced, but underany circumstances they could not have avoided, with the same extension of private credit, most of the embarrass- ments which have surrounded them. They have traded beyond their means, and intheir anxiety to attract business from this city, have approached much nearer bankruptcy than many of them find agreeable or at all pleasant. The notion of annexation to the United States, so often suggested by our territorialists, has hitherto been rejected by the British colonial papers.— Whenever they have alluded to the subject, 1t has always been, asfaras we knew, to discountenance the idea of separation, and to repeat professions of rence to the mother government. ‘is is natural ; but it is a feeling which circum- The following language B., Observer of the 5th inst., contains a bolder threat in regard to independence, than we have before see: “ There is so much respect and regard for monarchy principles, in New Brunswick, that the idea of separation from England sannot, without great end cogent reasons, be entertained; but our trade is prostrate— our population is gradually remov- ing to the neighboring republio—and it is hard to say what men, in eelf defence, may be forced to do British empire, if they wish to retain the , must Unite them under a COMMERCIAL AFFAIBS MONEY MARKET. Monday, Decembec 25—6 P..| There was no meeting of the Board of Brokers to- day. An adjournment was made on Saturday ove, to Tuesday, that the members might observe the c-remonies of Christmar, and partake of the boun- tiful feast, annually prepared for the occasion, with their minds free from the cares and anxities of bus!- that they might forget, if possible, the responsi- bilities of long and short contracts, and turn their attention to the more appropriate duties of the day. It was about as well that mo attempt was made to transact the usual routine of business, for the horribl, weather would have made it almost abortive, a day, of ali others that we have had during the past month, to remain in-doors; and these who could do so were fortunate.
