It bas been a sort of blue Monday in Wall street to day—the holyday, yesterday, having broken up ‘the week, and deranged business operations of all Kinds. Atthe first board to-day, Harlem fell off per a Worcester, ; cont. ; Long Island, *;; Norwich Canton Co, \ ; Farmers’ Loan, ; Reading 1; New Haven, 1; Hudson River, 4; Treasury notes. es smproved, }g; and U. 8. 6's, 1868, 1{. There were sales of govermment sixes at the close of the board, below jitting. It is the im- 1 pression of some of the shrewdest operators im the Street, that government securities have advanced too much and too rapidiy, and that @ reaction witt soon actly with these views, as there is evidently a sound and healthy basis for the improvement. It has been stated upon pretty good authority, thatthe government will not call for any hat its resources are sufficient to meet all its engagements, without recourse to another loan. This, in connection with the loss of confidence in nearly every other steck, has created a demand for them. Money is plenty enough for such investments, or for any other equally safe. The fancies are avoided prices offered earlier in th take place. We do not agree more funds: by outside speculators and capitalists. Several small mercantile houses have failed within the past week or two, in this city; but they have had very little influence upon the markets, or upon the pudlic mind. There have alsohsen numerous failur in other cities—in fact, Boston and Phil commercial classes of those cities have been more em- barrassed in their financial affairs, than those of New York ; in fact, our money market has been tightened by the aid extended to the merchants of these cities, in discounting their paper. Had it not been for the fa- cilities received from our capitalists, there would have been a dozen failures in both of the above named ci- ties, where there has now been one. The failures in | this city have been to a very small amount, compared with the immense amount of business transacted here, and have been less thanin either Boston or Philadel- \phia. The rivalry which has for several years past existed with regard to this city, has led the merch: of our two neighbers into overtrading, which has re. sulted inruin to so many. The ambition exhibited by the commercial classes of Bostonand Philadel- phia, to cope with Now York, has cost many of them their mercantile existence, and such will ever be the result of such an unequal contest. New York has become established as the ccmmercial emporium of | the new world, and must, ere the lapse of many years, be the commercial emporium uf the world, and it is utterly useless for any other city in this Union to at- tempt to wrest from us what our geographical posi, tion, or capital, enterprise, and resources have so etrorsly fixed within our grasp. There is mo ne- cessity for rivalry or competition, between this and other cities ; Boston has an immense system of rail- roads, which intersect all parts of New England, from which she draws a large amouat of business, and can at all; tlines, carry on « safe and successful trade; ‘but whon the enterprising capitslists and merchants of lertake to intersect the trade of this city by extending thelr means of communication with the ‘Western States through our territory, they go beyond their legitimate business, and are in danger of being caught out of their depth. Philadelphia had not yot made much progress in connecting herself with the ‘West, or with different sections of Pennsylvanis, by ailroads; but her geographical position {s more favors, ‘ble than that of Boston for intersecting the Western and Southern trade, and she has, therefore, been more successful im her rivalry tham that city. New York) however, has nothing to fear from all these efforts, and there is mo danger but that our merchants will always commend as much business as it will be safe to do- This market has a superiority over all others in the country,as regards supply and variety, which alone ot purchagers from all sections: Prices current here regulate those of every other city: and the control exerted by operations hore over those in every other part of tho country, is likely to be mor® absolute, instead of diminishing. The commercial classes of Boston and Ihiladelphia would, therofore he wise, if they at once abandoned the rivalry which hhas already led them into so much difficulty, and come pelled them to call upon those they were com” poting with for ald and support in their extremity. ‘A beslthy competition is usually productive of good and adds to the prosperity of the country at large ; but the moment it goes beyond that, it reacts upon the weakest competitor, and results inruin. Enter. prise is highly commendable in all classes; but it if frequently so nearly allied to speculation, that it is dificult to distinguish. Speculators are all mon of enterprise, and their movements frequently tend more 26 the developement of the resources of the country than amy other class; but,as a genoral thing, they eacrifice themselves in so doing, It is very natura; hat city is sufficient to al that the merchants of our neighboring cities should feel anxious to do all the business they possibly oan ; but if that feeling leads to overtrading, theeffect i# injurious, rather than beneficial, to those engaged, and to the city at large. New York never oan bo injured by the rivalry of any other city; but, on the contrary, it may give an impetus to our works of internal im- lelphia have suffered much more severely than we have, and the | 8 to 10.000 ditto pure Genesee $5 56% a h23 | ditto this State, at $6 44; 500 Brooklyn at $5 37/4. and | 1000 barrels Canadian in bond were sold at $5 65; | 200 barrels fancy Genesee sold at $5 87';; sales of Boutherm, including 2 to 300 George- ‘The Mlinols and Mishigen Canal was open at the las* accounts, and boats passed through its entire length | Fitchbui The tolls this, the first year of navization, have exseed- ed all estimates, and will, with all the drawbacks, such as the want of water, and the delays attending such sn occurrence, amount to sbout one hun- dred and thirty thousand dollars, This, after deducting the expenser, will be appropriated to the payment of interest on the canal debt. As soon as navigatiow is suspended for the season, the repairs neceseary to remedy the defects will be mede—which comprise principally puddling the bottoms, so as to prevent leakege—and the canal placed in first rate order f:r asother year’s business. The estimate former by the canal trustees, relative to tolls, as an ultimatum, is three hundred thousand dollars. From the receipts of the first year, there is every prospect of this being exceeded the third year of its operation. The receipts of produce at Chicago are not #o large as was anticipated, amd they continue to fall off as navigation on the lakes draws to a close, The reason for this is that St. Louis, contrary to expectation. bas proved a steadier and better market than Chicago— and that it ie lees expensive to transport grain from the Illinois river to St. Louis than to Chicago. Also: that a merchant shipping to St. Louis from the river meets with a quicker return ; 60 that he can, with the same amount of credit, do double the business that an be done by s merobant in Chicago who first pur- choses his crain on the river, then ships to Chicago. end finally must tranship to Buffalo before he can re- alize upon it. The operation, in the latter instance, en illinois river boat acts 0% ll value in the St. Louis market, with which the merchant is prepared to procure hima another curgo, ‘The Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad is progres + ing very rapidly, under the management of anener- Getic eet of contractors. Since the work was com. | "J menced, the engineers have wade such changes in ths s Une, and in the construction of the road, as will sav. the company about two hundred thousand dellurs, ‘According to the estimates first formed, the total cost Of the'toad and equipments was fixed at $3,110,000; ‘the company now expect to build and equip the road bay for $2910,006, This amount has been nearly all filled | Ja ‘up| by subsoription, so that there will be mo debt badging over the company when it commences opera- tions.
