There wae a slight improvement im qactations of stocks to-day, but it gave no increased activity to the market. At the first board Tressury note: advanced 44 pervent.; Farmers’ Loan }{; Canton Co. \, wich and Worcester 4; and Harlem 3. Reading Bonds fell off {; Erle bonds %{; and North American ‘Trust 1% per cent. At the second board Harlem advanced 94; Erie bonds 34; Reading Railroad %; Canton Co. >; Norwich and ‘Worcester x; Farmers’ Loan 3s. The tolls on the Iilinois and Miohigsn Canal, re- ceived at Chicago for the month of October, amounted to $10,310 67. The tolls at La Salle for the same time were about the same amount, making the aggre- gate for the month $20,600, Up t» the 31st of October the tolls received amounted to more than one hun- dred thousand dollars, and will, for the season, reach nearly one hundred and twenty-five thousand, ‘The Governor of Illinois, by authority of the lxst liquidation law, has appointed Messrs. N, H. Ridgley, Uri Manly, and John Calhoun, trustees, for finally Closing the affairs of the State Bank of Illinois. The Board of Directors have assigned to these trustees all the effects of every hind of the bank, ana have given them full power to do every thing nevossary for the performance of the trust. The remaining bonds of the Erie Railroad Company amounting to $500,000, which will complete the whole of the $3,000,000 loan authorized by an act of the Legislature of this State, are about bving issued, and proposals for the purchase of the whole, or any portion of them, will be received until the 20th inst. These ‘bonds bear seven per cent interest, and an amount sufficient to pay three years interest on the whole issue, is deposited with the Comptroller of the State. This joan is the first lien updn the entire property of the Company. On the ist of January, the road will be opened to Binghamton, after which the net earn- ings will, it is estimated, be large enough to pay the interest on the new and old debt, and the new and old stock. A large amount of the bonds already issued s held in Europe, and they are considered by oapital- ints one of the best investments in the market. The New York, Albany, and Buffalo Telegraph Company haye declared a semi-annual dividend of five per cent, payable at their office in Utica, on the 20th instant. ‘The Bowery Fire Insurance Company have declared a semi-annual dividend often per cent, payable on the Ist of December. The aggregate shipments of flour for the week were | 50,069 barrels; corn, 140,280 bushels; wheat, 29,516 | bushels. Of the shipments of breadstuffs, 40,234 barrels | of flour, 120,920 bushels of corn, and 21,300 bushels of | wheat went to Great Britain and Ireland. The ship- mente of flour, wheat and corn from Southern ports | have recently been large. From New Orleans, for | the two weeks ending the 28th of October, inclusi the exports to Great Britain were 11,054 barrels flour, 79.684 bushels cern, and 11,780 bushels of wheat. Within the past day or two engagements have been made for large shipments of breadstuffs to England; and as the period for the closing of the canal approach- cs, there appears to be increased activity in these arti- cles. A large portion of these shipments have been made, no doubt, in anticipation of an advance in prices on the other side. We do not anticipate prices anything like those which raled in 1846 and the early part of 1847; but that they will be higher than those current at the latest dates, we have not the lightest doubt. The potato crop has already been nearly used up by disease and by increased con- sumption, to prevent a total loss from the rot, and the consumption of breadstuffs, for the remainder of the season, will be greater, in pro- | portion to the population, then heretofore. Jo the event of an advance of fifteen to twenty per cent teking piace in breadstuffs, on the oth-r side during the winter, shipments for this and the North- ern Atlantic ports, could not be made more profitably then than at the present time; for the supply at the various ports {s limited, and the prospect of its being sufficiently increased to permit large shipments to Europe, is very poor indeed; ‘n fact, prices here will ad without any important external demand. | We cannot caiculate on more than two weeks’ longer navigation on the canals, at the extent, and the re- ovipte this year, thus far, at tide water, have been nearly iillion of barrels of flour, eight hundred thousand bushels of wheat, and three million bushels of corn, lets than up to the same period last year, ‘This deficiency in the supply, with the increased con- sumption on the sea- board, will leave us with stooks, at tke close of navigation, by no means calculated to stands heavy draft for shipment, We have an im- mense population in this city and vicinity, and in the Eastern States, consumers of breadstuffe, supplies for which, for six months’ consumption, must be 1 laid im before the canals close. In the most | favorable light in which the matter can be viewed, there is very little Qoubt but that an important improvement in prices for breadstuffs will be realized | before the resumption of navigation in the spring. It is true, our railroad communication with the interior is more perfect than it ever has been before; and in an emergency. supplies of breadetuffs from the interior, to some extent, could be obtained; but the additional cost of transportation would place prices for that re- ceived co high that we can anticipate no advantage 2 = Sete Bebe PESEEeE Seuee do Wo de ow North Am Teast, 20 Mercuante’ Bank, Second "67, #l2mos 10055 W Kead Mort Bonde, — 61 1100 Erie Bonds, 7s, Canal, ‘2Bere Erie RR, full, 960 « zB, 2 Canton Company, T Wy 15 N York & N Haven, \dsom Canal, 145 CITY TRADE REPORT. It is sure to make a sen- sation here, as there is great curiosity to see The little Olympic theatre, here, which has bees dong a very tair business during the summer sea- son, 18 now open, but will close as soon as the American opens, when the manager, Mr. Deer- ing, will repair with his company to Mobile to oyen the theatre at that face: The hotels are fast filling up, for the runaways are returning home again by every boat. The route ficm New Youk, via Albany, Buflilo, Sandusky and Cinemnati, which 1s considerably in vogue now, 1s an extremely uncertain one in the present state of the rivers, and travellers comin’ south will find it to their advantage to consult the ac counts of the rivers if time 1s of any consequence, as it 1s by uo means desirable to be stuck for @ week at a time, and the ordinary detentions om the route are not at all agreeable. The cotton crop is good. The great Western railway trom Albany to Buflalo, 1s,at present, in most excellent condition, the entire line from Albany to Rochester, a dis- | tance of 252 mules, having been relaid with tie heavy T rail. The residue of the line from Rochester to Buffalo, will shortly be completed when this magnificent work, it is believed, will compare favorably with any railway in the world. Ithas, in fact, been determined that, in point of speed and safety, as well asin the luxurious ar- Tangement of the passenger cars, this line of ratl- way shall be equal to any other line in the world. It has been my purpose to speak at length of the syétem upon which this road is conducted—of its capacity sinee its completion—of its inaomitable officers, and of the various obstacles and dis- couragements which the companies have encoun- tered and overcome, particulatly since the passage of the act of May 12, 1817, compelling them to subetitute the heavy rail for the flat rail. he loeation of the road 18 oe advantageous tothe inhabitants of the interior Inthe location, the companies were anxious to consult the con- venience of the ci 8 residing in the large inte- rior towns, among wh: are Syracuse, Aubura, neca Falls, Waterloo, Geneva, Canandaigua, Vienna, &e., all of which are towns of coa- siderable size ; it was with the view of rntersect- ing these towns, that the Auburn snd Aubuin and Rochester from a straight line in locating the road. i folly to say that they have not succeeded admi- | atly yn carrying out the original design. feos a 28 miles or railway is a permanent line; it ch will sooner issippt with of the world— 3 8 road 13 1acal- eulable and inestimable, and the price of hares. will increase with the increase of population and wealth. The New York and Erie road, the parallel road in course of construction betweem racuse and Rochester, wilt of course share,| central link in the greatiron road, whi the great. commercial metropoli: ation t@ | will not sensibly aflect the business of +4 pr this: of the great central line. The business o| hes been greatly improved during the past sum- mer, by the travel over the new route from Albany to Cincinnati, via Buffalo and Sandusky. Youmay purchase a through ticket from Albany to Cine! nati, at the office of Mr. Barker, the indefati and popular receiver in Albany; you go from All to Buflalo by railway ; trom thence to. Sandusky in one of the fleet lake steamers, a San- dusky to Cincinnati by railway; you go over thie route at. apace not quite equal to the motion of electricsty, but mach quicker than @ post coach. The completion of the New, York and Albany railway will make Cincinnati a mere environ of the metropolis, and it will be a happy event to eloged lovers, and oft-hand men of business, who Jove to jive and die ina hems ‘The progress of the world to that great era of ewilization which we anticipate with such anxiety and hope, must be gradual; hence the herculeag scheme of Mr, Whitney for the immediate con- struction of a railway from the Pacific coast ta the head waters of Lake Michigan was premature 5 the wants of the country do not require such a line at present, and the wealth of the country does not warrant its construction, That it will be built at a future period is not less certain than that the great West, from the Pacific 19 the inland lakes, will be peopled by a nation of freemen, The bed mi the TV ailwa from Albany to Baffalo is covered with gravel throughout nearly the ea- dlway ; At “ane pr leo, F. 4 Pr corson, Gelphia: Li aie , ceipt of £4, « copy w alt paces of the yd, to De.
