Professor Barry’s Wonderful Tricophe- Yous or Medicated Compovnd.— Aung tho numerous re»pootyrie ess. Hlumenback, Pro's ® Baa’ M. Richervuit. The celebrated Bar Hy ‘remedy to prevent baldness, and re n off or b-come thin, to prevent ppearance of scurf and d: to @ most healthy, sofc and gloasy ‘state, yet free from al! oily aud gressy sppouranee. It is sold in Jarge 25 at the 1 office, 139 Broalway, Agente— Wright, 28 South ‘tueet. Phi letph Brown, Wash- ete eect Bets, ‘and sold by all the druggists in the Un ted COMMERCIAL AFFAIBS, MONEY MARKET. Friday, Oct. 27—6 P. M, ‘This was another blue day in Wail street, for the ‘bulls. Nearly all the fencies fel! off from the closing pricesyesterday, but the sales were merely to a mode- rate extent. Harlem declined % per cent., Long Island 34, Norwich and Worcester 3, Morris Canal 1, Read- ‘ing Railroad %, Pennsylvania 5s 34, U.S. 6s, 18638, 1, and Treasury Novos3. It is impossible to give a satis- factory reason for the depreciation in the market price of fancy stocks, which has been experienced within the past two days. The money market is easy, and, as far as we can judge from operations in Wall street, is likely to continue so. One of the causes of the falling off in quotations for some of the fancies is, no doubt, the timidity of holders, aud their inability to hola. There iss large class of speculators in Wall street who purchase fancy stocks entirely on time, without sufficient capital to take them up at the maturity of their contracts, and who are obliged to ell, and pay or pooket the difference, whatever it may be. This keeps the market constantly supplied, with stock, mo matter what the state of prices may be. ‘There are, in the list of railroad stocks, some which the shorts, at present prices, will without much doubt Jose money on, unless they take themin at once. There isa limit to the stocks to which we refer, below which At would be difficult to force them, as there are, in the market, plenty of buyers, who would absorb every share afloat, at prices but little lower than those now ruling. The board of brokers have, by a vote of 41 to 17, de. -olded that Mr. Morgan shall psy Mr. Cutting one thousand dollars for negotiating the sale and purchase -of $800,000 of treasury notes with the Secretary of the ‘Treasury. The amount claimed by Mr. Cutting was $2,000 ; but as there was some doubt in the minds of the committee, relative to the employment of Mr. Cut- ting, in the earliest stages of the businesss,it was deemed best to compromise the matter and give him half the amount. Mr. Morgan vacated his seat before the final ‘vote upon the question was taken, and adheres to his determination not to submit to the decision of the board. Another movement has been made by the Erie Rail- road Company. An arrangement has been completed Jooking to the diversion of the Eastward travel to the Erie road by the Seneca Lake.and a connection with the Erie road at Elmira, To effect this diversion, the company have a contract for ten years with the road running from the lake to Elmira, and with an enter- prising steamboat proprietor. These arrangement, carried out, will enable them to land passengers in New York, from Geneva, in fifteen hours, or eight hours sooner than at present. Upon the lake a boat 48 to be placed that willrun the distance (40 miles) in two hours and a quarter. The cars now run regularly on the New York and ‘New Haven Railroad, between New Haven and Bridge- port, a distance of eighteen miles. In about three ‘weoks that portion of the road between Bridgeport and this city will be opened, and regular trains commence running the whole length of the road. The New York and New Haven Ralirond Company have purchased, at a cost of $75,000, the property at the corner of Canal and Centre streets, now occupied by the Gas Company; and will soon erect a large and commedious depot on the cite. The Harlem Railroad Company have received from the city the privilege of laying a track in Canal street, from Centre street, to within seventy-five feet of Broadway, for the accommodation of the immense increase of travel expected from the connection with the New Haven and all the New England railroad com- panies. This will give a very convenient starting and terminating point for the through travel, and re- lieve the track from Centre street to the City Hall, of all but the city cars and city passengers. New York is rapidly building up an immense rail- oad system, which will. in a few years, be as important as our numerous steamboat lines, and will give this city an impetus so great that it it will soon outstrip every other in the Union, and make all others tributary to us. The Erie Railroad ; the Harlem, when finished, and the Hudson River Railroad, if it is ever finished, will open the trade ot an dmmense section of country to this city, throughout the year, and give ur the whole of the trade which has heretofore partially been drawn to other citie GBAt the eccond board there was a slight improvement on prices current at the first board. A rtatement of the foreign trade of France during ‘the eight months of this year, compared with the cor- responding period of last, shows @ great falling off in the number of vessels employed. The arrivals, com. pared with the like period in 1847, were less by 779,568 tons, and the departures by 164.644 tons—an extraor- dinary decay, even allowing for the extraordinary circumstances that occasioned it. In the stocks of produce in the French government warehouses there was,at tke end of August, notwithstanding the di- minished arrivals, a very great increaso—thw strongest possible illustration we can have of the derangement sof business, and its effect upon consumption. ‘The quantity of flour, wheat, corn, and barley, left at tide water duringithe third week in Oct. andin the years 1847 and 1848, is as follows :— Flour. bbls, Wheat, bu Corn, bu, Barley, bu. 126717 "133,980 148, 798 Wi,637 187, is, 156,837 140,943 Increase, 302 21,590 ‘Whe aggeegate quantity of the same articles left at tide water, from the commencement of navigation to to the 22d Oct., inclusive, is as follows':— Flour, bbis, Wheat, bw. The following table shows the quantities of some of the principle articles of produce left at tide water, from ‘the commencement of navigation to the 22d of Octo- ber, inclusive, during the years 1846, (100 days,) 1847, (175 days,) and 1848, (175 days) :— Receirrs or Pxopuce at tHe Tine Waren, 1846. 1847. 1848, Canal open. There isa large amount of produce in the interior to come for- ward, and we have no doubt but that, between this and the close of navigation, the receipts will exceed those of any previous year, The receipts at tide water, for the remainder of the Beason last year, were as follows: — Flour, bbls. Should there be a hand- some increase for the remainder of this year, inthe re- -eoipts for the same period last, there will still be « great deficiency in the aggregate. There will not, however, be that deficiency in tolls collected on the oanals of this State, which the falling off in the re- ovipts of breadstuffs genorally would indicate, asjthere has been @ very great increase in the receipts of othor articles of produce, particularly provisions. The following table shows the amount of tolls re- ovived on all the New York State Canals in cach of the following years, during the third week 1:2 Ootober, the total up to the 22d of October :— New Youx State Canats—Amount ov Touts. 3d Week in Oct, Tutal to Oct. 22. 64 $1,430,508 88 1677 823 78 1,432 670 36 1,703 498 63 2.028 847 35 2.080 482 82 2 210 205 54 « 141,103 11 3.051.450 48 + 165,721 04 2,622 378 96 ease of the third week over 1847 was $24 618 83, and the total decrease up to the 22d of October ‘was $429,071 52. The weather looks favorable for a lengthened navi- gation this season; and in the event of its continuing a6 late as last year, and an increase in the weekly re- ceipts anything like the above is realized, more than one-half of the present deficiency in tolls will be wiped out, The aggregate tolls for the year 1848 wil) ameunt, in round numbers, to about three millions of dollars. Th INTELLIGENCE BY THE MAILS Wasuinarton, Oct. 26, 1843. ‘The News from Ireland—The Feeling Here—Whig and Democratic Barbecues—Fighting and Bet- ting—Major Pol Chargeship--The Senators from Alabama, §. §c. The telegraphic news from Ireland, published us this morning’s papers, Stating that Smith O’Briem had been convicted, and was to have been hung on the 14th, has created a profound sensation here We cannot believe England has adopted such « course. What! to hang aman in this Christian age, in that most liberal and enlightened country, for a mere political offence ! to take a fellow-crea- ture’s life because he vainly attempted, after years of oppression and injustice, to place his country on a level with its tyrant; and to avert the thousands of horrible deaths by starvation which yearly take place—because, in a word, a bloedless effort was made to avert the doom of Poland trom his native land, and to make it in truth, as well as in form, an **integral part of the Britishempire!” For thiw struggle, unopposed, as it was, to any law of God or any just law of man, he is to be judicially mur- dered, under the fiction of having compassed the Queen’s death, So, then, afterall. O’Brien was to be hung oma fiction. We would fain believe that he has not suffered “the extreme penalty of the Jaw,” as itis daintily termed; and yet, we know well that Inland has never adopied a meresful course when her ** policy’ prompted otherwis We suppose plenty of trash will be written—as has been before—about Irishmen not deserving liberty if they tamely submit to such oppression, &c. But people who write thus are ignorant of the subject upon which they treat. We believe the individual bravery of Irishmen is undisputed. Can it, then, be imagined that, asa nation, they lack courage? The faet is, Ireland is a small spot—its limits are cireumseribed, and the over- whelming army of England canstrike iteverywhere atonce. There is no retreating from one portion of a fertile country to another, as was the case im our struggle for independence. They can certain- ly retire to the mountain fastnesses; but of what ava‘lis that? They must there either starve or succomb. Ireland may struggle for her night but, in the effort, English bayonets would tear her to pieces before the first step towards liberty would be gained. It any successful effort 18 made in Ireland to shake off her yoke, it must be when England is engaged in a war with some powerful adversary—she could then make her own terms; but not till then. The whig barbecue at Bladensburg was a very fine affair, several ladies adding beauty to the scene around the spa spring. We did not hear, however, that any new ideas were bronght to light. Maryland was given, of course, to Taylor. In the village, several fights took place. we under- stand; and. the beauty of these. pugilistic displays consisted in the fact, that democrats and whigs | fought with, quite as muchas against, one another. A great many bets were made upon the result of the Presidential election Mr. Alderman Lennox bet $1,000 that Taylor wonld receive a thousand majority in Maryland, and Mr. Gideon bet a hundred dalled upon the same re- sult. The democrats are to have a barbecue to- morrow, about eleven miles from this city; and a large deputation of the democratic association will be in attendance. It may be gratifying to the many friends of Major Bill Polk to know that that gentleman has settled his account with the State Department for his brilhant services in Naples, as Charge; and that there is a balance due him of thirty-three dollars and thirty-five cents, It is believed that Mr. Dixon H. Lewis's death will ensure the election, by the Legislature of Alabama, of W. R. King, (familiarly known as Misa Nancy,) who now fills Mr. Bagbv’s seat. by appointment of the Governor. Mr. King’s elee- tion, until now, was considered as a very doubt- ful matter, as he belongs to the same portion of the State as did Mr. Lewis, who, by the way, de- feated him at the last election, and it has alway been the practice in that State to select the Senators from different localities—giving one to the south and the other to the north Both the seats are now vacant. Oneaa. Battimore, Oct. 27, 1848, Whig Mass Meeting—Col Hamtramk and Gen. Taylor—The Ravels—The Viennorse— Theatrical Movements, §c. The whig mass meeting at Monument Square, last night, was large and enthusiastically attended, and did not adjourn until nearly midnight. Ad- dresses were delivered by Senator Pearse, Wm. Cost Johnson, and Colonel Humtramk, of nia. The speech of the latter was listened to with thnilling interest. In his youth he had fought ua- der Gen. Taylor as a volunteer, in the engagement at Rock River, which saved the then infant city of St. Louis from pillage ; was with him in the Florida war, and held a command in the gallant band with which he achieved his memorable vic- tories on the Rio Grande. He spoke of him as his old commander and friend, and described his eminent qualiiications, his habits of deep stady and patient investigation, until the enthusiasm of the assemblage knew no bounds. He told them also that a revolution was progressing in Virginia, from which he anticipated the most glorious poli- tical results. The Ravels are drawing splendid houses at the Holliday street Theatre. Their performances are undoubtedly very fine. An opera company, with Mr. Brough, Mr. Manvers, and Miss Brienti, as the principal actors, is doing up the operatics at the Museum. They have good houses. = hie The Front street has been_put in prime order, and opens on Monday evening next, with the Viennoise Children, under its old and popular manager, Mr. Burton. They are to be followed, I learn, by Mr. Macready. Mr. Owens, the popnlar comedian, has pur- chased the Moward Atheneum, and is preparing to open it with a good company. He has an un- bounded popularity in Baltimore, and will doubt- less do well. Dr. Collier has been here, endeavoring to prow cure an establishment to exhibit his naked women in, but has so far been unsuccessful. _ Itisalso said that Mr. Peale, of Philadelphia, intends bringing Peale’s Museum here, and Iq cating it in Washington Hall. Harrisnvra, Oct. 25, 1848. The Presidentral Campargn. There has come down upon us to-day the warm sun and the soft atmosphere of June. The broad and shallow Susquehanna and its islands, the distant mountains in their fading autumnal drapery, and the intervening hills, make up an interesting sub- ject for the landscaper, and quite as interesting to the practical spectator, who looks for the capacity of the soil, and the raw materials that are excavated from the hill sides, those elements that to go to sustain an active people in bread and em- ployment. A good many years ago, when Daniel Webster made his free trade speeches to the farmerso New York, at Rochester, on the night of their fes- tival, to the committees of the State Society, he | took occasion to say, that excepting the island of Great Britain, there was no State of an equal area to Pennsylvania, which the world could exhibit possessed of the same elements of wealth, the same raw materials for agriculture, manufacture: and commerce, as the Keystone State. Just so. How wiil the silver mines of Mexico compare with | the iron deposites of this commonwealth; and how insignificant are all the gold and diamond wash- ings of South America, contrasted with the coal beds of Munch Chunk, and the region round about it; to say nothing of the bituminous strata stick~ ing out on both sides of the river, all along the hills of the Monongahela ? More recently, in his first cool acquiescence to the Philadelphia nomination, Mr. Webster gave itas his opinion, that 1t was @ “ nomination not fit to be made,” pleading, however, the pleaof @ choice between three evils as the only alternative of the great whig party of Massachusetts. Since then, Mr. Webster and thousands of others have come to the decision that the election of Gen. Taylor would be the election of a whig, and the maintenance of whig principles; and the illustra- tions afforded in the recent elections of the in~ cressing and steadily absorbing popularity of n. Taylor, have brought the whigs from a state of fngid imdifference to a most enthusiastic sup- port of his claims upon the party. : But, from the beginning, the name of General Taylor was well received in this State. Asa Northern man, and as the chiefiain of the Penn- sylvamia volunteers, in the glorious mare) from Vers Cruz to Mexico, General Scott would have been a more avatlable candidate in this Common wealth, and perhaps in all the North; but, from the heginning, the whigs ot Pennsylvania believed that Gen. Taylor was preferable to Mr. Clay on the score of availability among the sturdy Germana of this great sovereignty. The elections that have since come off, North and South, and the late well-contested contest, resulting in the election of Johnston, aa Governor, have given to the whigs of | Pennsylvania a confidence wad an enthusiasm
