The ‘intelligence which we have received by ‘this vessel, is highly :mportant and painfully im- teresting. Snuth O’Brien, the ardent patriot, the honest and fearless rebel, the gallant and self-sac- rificing, though perhaps rasli, revolutionist, has, | it appears, been found guilty; and—oh, civilized | England (2) sentenced to be hanged, beheaded and quartered!! The excitement which this sad piece of intelligence created in our city, and espe- cially among our Irish citizens, is indescribable. | {t was intense—silently, dreadfully, intense. Austria is like a boiling cauldron. The Emperor has again fled—an insur- rection has taken place, and the city ot Vienna was, at the last accounts, in possession of the in- surgents, and, according to our telegraphic des- pateh, being bombarded by the imperial troops, and itis very probeble that ere this the govern- ment of I’rance has interfered. If it has done so, then we may say the ball has opened in earnest, and there will be no peace or rest in Europe as Jong as a king or a queen sits upon a throne. The great, grand, and overwhe'ming struggle between democracy and the “ right divine” has commenced, and war, bloodshed, carnage, and desolation will mark the history of urope, till the former shall have achieved ita work, be it sooner or later. Cier- many is still in anuproar, and France, atthe last accounts, was on the point of a ministertal crisis, the result of which may hesten the commencement of the scenes which have to take place in Europe, | betore the iniquities of centuries are atoned for. It 1s with profound regret we announce the death of the Hon. vixon H. Lewis, a member of the Umied States Senate, from Alabama. Mr. Lewis died yesterday, in this city, at twenty minutes past twelve o'clock. He arrived here two weeks ago, on a visit, and was shortly after attacked with the disease which has termivated fatally. In the death of Mr. Lewis, the Senate of the United States has lost one of its most able and ac™ complished members. His cng service in the House of Representatives, of which body he was amen him thoroughly conversant with parliamentary business ; and his intellect, which was of great gresp, gave him a most eminent position in the national councils. On financial questions, his views were always received with attention and respect; and his marked eiliciency whea Chairman of the Kinance Committee of the Senate, gained him warm commendation, even from his political oppone We would not anticipate, by any suggestion or Tecominendation of ours, what we are sure 1s the | universal disposition of our citizens, to testify ina most signal manner to their sense of the eminent qualities of the depaited statesman. New York owes this to the memory of Mr. Lewis. Oa move than one occasion, when her citizensewere assailed in the body of which he was a member, and when the representatives of the State preserved a shame- ful and cowardly silence, the voice of the warm- hearted Senator from Alabema was raised in vin dication of the rights of the oppressed, and in man ly opposition to the despotic will ot faction. In Alabama, Mr. Lewis attained a popularity suchas no other man in the State enjoyed. Nor was his popularity confined to his own State. It is little more than a year since our citizens united in tendering him a warm testimonial of regard. His death wil! but strengthen those sentiments of es- teem so universally felt for him throughout the | country. Tun Sreamsuiy Evrora, under the command ‘of Caytain BE. G. Lott, which arrived yesterday, left this city on the 27th ult., and has thus made the entire voyage to and from Liverpool, includ- ing her stay at the latter port, in the incredibly short space of 28 days.
