Loan 4; Harlem, preferred, fell off <; Treasury notes closed firm at yesterdays prices, ‘The steamship Hermans, for Southampton and Bremen, carried out $114,737 70, in specie, ‘The amount of specie in the Sub Treasury yesterday ‘was $1.400.000, inclusive of $300,000 a special deposite. Barings’ eiroular of the 6th inst., says that there is no variation since the previous week ‘nm American se- curities. There was some business doing in United Stetes Sixes, at 96 a 97 The friends of the air line railroad between this city and Boston ere actively engaged in pushing forward that enterprise. It is proposed to put that portion of the line between New Haven (to conneot with the New | York road) and Middletown, immediately under con- tract. The cost of this part will not vary mach from $550,000, or $22000 per mile. Of this amount there has already been obtained along the line the sum of $200,000. The sum of $250000 has been offered by seyeral individuals interested in the New York and New Hayen road, making a total of $450,000. This leaves a deficiency of $100,000. There is no doubt but that this amount will be forthcoming, when required. | The city of New Haven has not come forward in thi businerr, as it should. The people of that city are deeply interested in this work. and the amount neces- sary to secure its completion is so small, that there is no doubt but that it will be made up at once, The report of the Vermont Central Railroad for the past year, has just been placed in the hands of the stockholders, This road extends from Windsor to Burlington, Vermont, a distanoe of 117% miles; all but 15 miles of it through the centre of the State of Ver- mont. Of the whole line, 42 miles, from Lyman’s bridge, at the mouth of theJWhite river, to Roxbury, 10 miles from Northfield, are finished and in running order, The 15 miles from Lyman’s bridge, along the Connecticut river to Windsor, areentirely graded, the bridges are finished, the cross ties for the superstruc- ture are on the ground; and nothing is wanting but the rails, which have been ordered from England, and $30,000 paid towards them, to enable the contractors {0 complete this portion of the road forthwith, The work on the upper portion of the road, from Northfleld to Burlington, 50 miler, is about one-third finished. On that section $514,321 have been already expended and about $1,000,000 more, it is estimated, will be re- quired to finish the road. The whole amount thus far expended on the entire road, is set down at $2,345,- 448 48; and the sum required to complete the road to Burlington, is estimated at about $1,306,686 To finish it to Montpelier, from the mouth of the White river, about $126,303 only will be necessary. The company have been so much embarrassed in its financial opera- tions, that it has been compelled to issue new stock, first at $75 per share, and finally at $50. The receipts on that portionof the road opened for trial, have been much larger than anticipated. From the 26th of June to the 26th of August, the income from 25 miles of the road was $8,350 59 Notwithstanding the diffloulties en- countered in the construction of this road and the, enormous sacrifices made by the issues of new stock, there is no doubt but that the road will ultimately be | productive, and the stock a good investment. The commerce of Chicago has increased with greater rapidity than that of any other port in the | ‘Western country. In 1830, only eighteen years ago, | Chicago was a mere trading post, and was the ren- desvous of government troops, agents, Indian traders | &o. In 1831, there was but one store in the place; and ‘as late as the year 1839, Chicago, and a large section of country in its vicinity, was supplied with food and other necessaries of life, principally, from the Western part of Ohio. In 1830, a vessel, loaded with wheat, cleared from Chicago, and from this small beginning, | in three years, the shipments of wheat increased to | 587,207 bushels, and of flour, to 2,920 barrels. From that time. the shipments have been as annexed. | Commence or Cuic, Wheat. 207 AGO.—AGRICULTURAL Exports. Lead Bides and leather, value ‘This commeroe, in that year, employed 19 steamers, 17 propellers, 86 brigs, and 120 schooners—an aggregate of 44,445 tons of shipping. The arrivals and departures of vessels, were 3.779. For the year 1847, the exports of leading articles were as follows:— Wheat, bush. . ..1,974,304 Flour, bbls. . Corn . 67.315 Beef. . 26,504 Oats 38,892 Pork.... 25,416 The value of the exports was $2,276,299, | This year. so far, there has been « very important falling off in the exports of flour and wheat, while there has been a large increase in the shipments of corn and ether articles. ‘There {s no State in the Union increasing so rapidly in wealth and resources as Illinois. Chicago is the principal shipping port of that State, and the growth of that city is a fair index of the growth of the State. The completion of the Illinois and Michigan Canal | has given an impetus to the agricultural resources of the State which has long been required, Its financial | affairs have wonderfully improved. Five years ago, it was officially announced in the Governor's message that there was not money enough in the State treasa- ry to pay the postage on public documents in the post office at the seat of government, and they were obliged to remain there. Since that time, » new loan of $1,600,000 has been made, the canal completed, a part of the interest on the entire debt of the State paid semi- annually, the whole of the interest on the new canal loan has been promptly paid, and one hundred thousand dol- lars on aecountof the principal Sales of canal land to the amount of $500,000 have been made, the whole of which will, atthe expiration of one year, be paid and ap- plied to the liquidation of the new canal debt. This will reduce it to less than one million of dollars. The revenue from the canal this year will be more than one hundred thousand dollars, which, with the portion of the one anda half mill tax now appropriated to the payment of interest, will go towards the payment of interest on.the old canal debt. Three-fifths of the one ‘and a half mill tax, are now appropriated to the pay- ment of interest on the entire funded debt of the State. This pays one-fifth of the whole interest, or $12 of the $60, annually accruing The new constitution of Illinois, adopted by the people last March. autho- rizes the levy ofa tax of two mills on the taxable pro- perty of the State, for the payment of the interest on the internal improvement debt. It has not yet been ascertained what the actual amount of this internal improvement debt of the State is, but it is sufficient for thore interested, to know that the two mill tax, and the three fifths of the ene and a half mill tax already levied and paid, will give a revenue large enough to pay the full interest on that portion of the State's in- debted ners The following table will show the export, for a series 42.598 lion from the United King- pty eg | guake a tirin the familie of vome of our up town millionaires, ta. dom :— Exrontation or BuLLion From Gneat Britain, Silver o 13,640,004 Gold oz. ‘ y 161,957,861 Of the 3,960,098 ounces of gold exported in the eleven years, 1.277,344 ounces were British coinage, and 2,682,094 ounces foreign and bullion.
