Total crop of the United Stater 2,347,634 The total crop in each of the past twenty years was as annexed :— Dales 857,744 +. 978,845 1,038,641 ‘087,477 1,422,930 11,801,497 + «2,347,684 ‘There have been but two crops injthis country larger than that of the present year, and the excess of these was only 31,241 and 46,869 bales. The excess of the last crop over that of the previous year was 568,983 bales, being an increase of thirty-two per cent. The exports, however, have more than kept pace with the productions—the increase over those of the pre~ vious year having been. 617,039 bales, equal to nearly fifty per cent. The points from which shipments of cotton were made, the destination and extent of ex- ports during the past year, were as annexed :— EXPORTATION OF Corron FROM Tit Usited Statee— ean Expine Suet. 1, 1848, 5,1 4. 29,579 11,390 N. - Virginia, 555 prac at Phil " Kew York, 193,248 Boston, 579 Total, 1848 261 Total, M7 222 Inerease, 1848, 41,338 617, ‘The per cent increase in shipments to all foreign ports but those of France was large, while to France it was limited. This is attributed almost entirely to the prostration of the manufacturing interest by the political revolution of February last. It ishardly pro- bablo that the aggregate shipments of cotton from the United States, for the year 1848, would have been much lar, er had prices ruled higher, as the stock on hand in all the ports, at the close of the year, was small compared to that of the previous year; but the aggregate value would have been much larger. When we take into consideration the immense increase in yalue a small advance in price for this staple produces, we can form some idea of what the value of the last crop would have been at prices current the year pre- vious, According to estimates made, it appears that the short crcp of 1846 and '47 was valued at about four millions of collars more than the long crop of 1847 and 248; or-in o her words, that the increase of 668,983 bale in the crop of the past year, has not only been sunk, lost, but the value of the same quantity as produced Jast year, has depreciated more than four millions of ‘dollars. This shows that large crops are by no means the most profitable. As an illustration of this, take the large crops of 1842 and 1844, amounting to 4,773,500 pales, which, at six cents per pound, make an aggre- gate value of $121.713.750, while the medium crop ef 1843) and the short crep of 1846, amounting to only 3,800,100 bales, which sold at eight and ten cents per pound: made an aggregate value of $14,627,500, being « de" create of 964,400 bales in quantity, and an increase of $22,013,750 in value, ‘The consumption of cotton, during the past year, has been about 550,000 bales less than in the previous year, which, with the increased production, makes the cess of supply more than a million rf bales, com- br with that of 1847. From the appearance of the trop now approaching maturity, the yield is likely to pe fully equal to that of the last year, and the con- sumption as limited ; in the event of which, the stocks on hand, at the close, will be as large asever known. The consumption on the continent of Eu- rope, and in the United States, is steadily increasing but the increase in these sestions of the world reduce: the consumption in Great Britain, which, with the jocal causes likely to operate upon the manufacturing interest of the United Kingdom, will tend very much to areduction of the demand forthe raw material in England during the year 1848 and °49. It is, therefore, probable that prices for this staple will rule low this ear; itin possible they may range below those of and *48. 847 Btoc! The Free Soil and Whig State Conventions—Accident on the Utica and Syracuse Railroad. Our city to-day is again a scene of confusion and bustle, with the arrivals of burnburners and whigs to attend the above conventions. The first is that of the barnburners, which was appointed last February tomeet in this city, on Wednesday, (to-morrew,) 13th September, to nominate presidential electors, governor and lieutenant governor, and the other State officers, for the race next November. There have already ar- rived in to-day’s cars ® number of delegates from New York, Long Island, Dutchess, Ulster, Rockland, Merki_ mer,&c. The next is the whig State convention, which meets here the day after, (14th September.) to nominate their candidates. As yet, I believe, not any of the whic delevates have arrived. A number of barnburners will arrive to-night in the twelve o'clock train of cers. Jobn Van Buren, Benjamin F, Batler, and other distincuished free coil men, are expected by this train One of the most extraordinary accidents, and escape without loss of life. happened this morning on the Utica and Syracuse Railioad coming from the West. When near Oneida, @ Mr. Gridley, trom Philade|pbia, in stepping from one cur to another, while the train was in motion, slipped and fell between the cars, Kor- tunately for him they were just going over a small crossway, under which ran a stream of water, and Mr, Gridley fell through cars and crosaway into the” stream, aud was not the least injured, only creatly excited. The careful conductor, Mr, Fellows, imme- diately stopped the train, and Mr G. was soon safe aboard the cars again. Such an escape from loss of Ife is reldom heard of, as bad the from which he fell been three feet further, Mr. G. would have been crushed to death in an instant. ‘This should bea warnipy to railroad passengers not to be moving from one car to another, when the train is running at full epeed. Eiaut O’Crocx, P.M. The second train of cars has just arrived, and quite a crowd of regular delegates to the free soil State con- vention are on the spot, together with a great many others, to vieit this convention, All the hotel have made preparations to receive their guests and e1 tertain them in the best manner. Baggs’ fine hotel is headquarters to-night. The foliowing regular delega- tion trom the different counties came in this train :— Albany Co.—Reuben Stanton, RK. Bennett, C. W. Broeck, C, T. Valentine, T, B. Redder, aud T. B. Van Buren. Columbia Co.—Theodore Miller and Wm. G. Man- derville. J. Buttolph and Wm, Elton. Lyman (re Putnam Co.—A. L, Dean and Saxton Smith, Rockland Co,—Daniel Johnson. Sullivan Co.—H. R. Morris, Ulster Co.—T. Seymour, Hacr-rast Front, P.M. A telegraphic despatch was received here this even- ing announcing that Gen. Leslie Combs would arrive in this city on Thursday morning, to attend the whig State convention, which mects hero on Thursday, September 14. At present we are unable to say who will recvive the nomination for Governor. An informal meeting will be held to-morrow morning, at Baggs’ hotel, when the delegates will probably make @ selection ' There are some strong objections to the nomination of Gen. Dix, one of which is that he voted against the Irish appropriation bill last winter; that was an error, which probably regrets, but which it is not in the power of convention to Fepalr; it would lose him the Irish yote—a vote which will be very stroug, and which it is, of course, all-important that the barnburners should try to secure, I am of the opinion this evening that Col. Win. C. Crain will be the nominee for Governor, with, perhaps, Robert Emmett, of New York, for Lieu- tenant Governor. It is, however, possible that neither of them may be nominated It has been sagened that the barnburners should adept the policy which they recommended to the Buf- falo Convention, and nominate a Clay whig for the office of Lieutenant Governor ; but | hardly believe that they will do it. A good deal of cordiality and unanimity seems to exist among thom, and there ix evidently a disposition to nominate the strongest men, whoever they may be. A number of Clay and Liberty delegates are present. Judge Addison Gardner, of the Court of Apprals, has been pressed to accept the nomination foc Gover- nor, but he has positively declined ; one of the rea- fons which has constrained him to refuse to allow bis name to be uted is that he isa Judge of the Court of Appeals; if he is nominated for Governor be would feel bound to resign the seat which he fills with so much dignity ; he does not belicve thet the vacancy which would thus be created could by filled without retarding the business of the court nor without inju- ry to the public interests. Tho judge hus had time to familiarize himself with the business of the court ; he has not done ¢o without application and study, and if he should now resign his place could not be filled, Onw o’ctock A.M just rrrived with a great many to visit the Free Soil Convention, from both east and west. Among them are the following regular dele- gates: - Westchester Co. Rensselaer Co.— and J. Livingston, Many more delegates will arrive in the 12 o’cloc'c train to-morrow. The third train hi Jared Crane and F, Barrett. lex. Ff. Wheeler, J. A. Comstock, Reavine, Pa., Sept, 11, 1348 The Run up to Reading—Pretiminary P the Free Soit State Convention Four thousand majority has been given in Berks county for Martin Van Buren. Reading is the capita of Berks, and here, day after to-morrow, the free soil Van Buren State convention is to be held. How will it affect the sturdy Duteh free soil democracy o the State of Berks, as this great county is often distin guished ? How will it operate upon the regular, or irreguiar, nominations of Baltimore and Philadelphi: We shall see, It may dosomething. Who knows ‘We had a pleasant run by rail up the Schuylkill this afternoon, through a fine cultivated ceuntry, teeming with the rich products of the Dutch farmers, and beau- tiful in its repletion of subsistence. Bread—bread, the hills and valleys wore smiling with their abunda: of bread and meat, butter, milk, honey, corn, cakes” and clover. A clear, fresh water, sparkling river, wind- ing dewn o rich and garden-like valley, bounded by wooded hills and mountains—with ever and anon, along the way, a town with its mills, furnaces and foundries. —such is the valley of the Schuylkill. The great charm of this valley is its subsistence. Here lies the Feeret of good govermment. Give the people bread, and plenty of it, and constitutions and governments are easy of administration. Thank God for the rich harvests that bless all the land. Amen, say all the people. What wealth, even from the famine across the sea, shall flow in again upon us from the rich pro- ducts of the year over the broad acres of this broad empire of Uncie Sam, Asan evidence of the substantial fare of Reading and Berks county, when called in to tea this evening, at the Mansion House, we were not limited to up of Young Hyson, or La Guyra, and a plate of chop} beef, asin the cities of the seaboard, but we had a good fashioned, country Pennsylvania supper, of veal cuth and eggs, fried chickens, tes, coffeo, milk and toast, corn bread, preserves, sclinite, schmeerkaes, and doubled and twisted doughnuts, friadin fat. That's the way to doit, That's the fare which, in Derk» county, produced your medium sized men of two hundred pounds avoirdupois, and rosy young damsels of sixteen, of one hundred and fifty ed valorem. Some of the county delegates are already on the ground. A preliminary town meeting of the free soflers, was held in Beyer’s Hotel to-night. Five de- legates were appointed for the city, to attend the State eonvention here om the Hith. After which, there being a crowd of « hundred persons, more or leas, in front of the house, Dr. Kdward 1). Gaxzam, of Pitta. burg, came forward and addressed them for an hour, taking the Boffalo platform as his guide. Mr. Gazzam contended thut nuither Cass nor Tay- for, and that neither of the conventions nominatin, the one or the other, was sound vpon the question free soil. It was the slave power which had ruled out Mr. Van Buren in ‘44, and the slave power which raled out the New York democracy from the convention of ‘48. He then described the Buifalo convention asa congregation of 75,060 freemen, champions for free jabor, tree speech and free svil. Heeread the Buffalo platform, and commented upon it, section by section. it desonnds that there shall be no more extension of slevery. Henry Clay, like Mr. Van Buren, was belie to ke, ip heart; sound upon this question; but the ‘oceedings ¢ poritivel restored to health and not to be decvived. Dr 19 Duawe ote 10 THE MARRIBD moot be ‘AM: MAURICRAC, bow 12st ’ ow pow, Lad ostracised him, and the whigs of the North ad truckled to the South, and taken up a tlaveholder. ‘The doctrine of free soll was the true ground. We want these new territories for tree labor, for our own children, and the oppressed of the old werld; and we want grants of land, in limited quantities, to actual settlers. We want to keep the public domain out of the hands of sordid speculators—we want it for free labor; for it is that alone which can ex- tend the glory and prosperity of the country. We wont, as fer as practicable, the officers of the federal government elected by the people. We want the Fosteges redvced—the Southern States are an ex- pense to the Post Ofice Department—the North pays the revenue, and the feoe North may, there- tore, demand @ reduction of the postazes, to on- courage and sustain the social {ies which binds us to- gether, Such are tho dootriuws of the Buifalo platform; and when that convention declared for the repeal of any act admitting slavery into the territories, how did it tellin Congress? It told jike the warning voice of the yeorie it came upon them |'ke the deep thunder of Niagara. 1t was this which » cured freedom to Oregon and the Wilmot provieo, it was this whieh persusded Jamer K. Polk to #\su that bill, in express condempa- tion of the holson letter of Gew Cass, After this fashion Mr. Gazzam continued fer an hour, winding up With a direct challonge to the Cass or Taylor mi to refute him, if they could, for that he was teady to them on the epot, It was time for free Ponnsylva. nia to be up.and deing.
