COMMERCIAL APFAIBS. MONEY MARKET. Thursday, September 7—6 P. M. ‘There were large sales to-day of some of the fancies; but yesterday’s prices were not sustained. At t first board Treasury Notes fell off 1; tper cent; Erie Railroad new, fell %!; Norwich and Worcester, \< Canton, %; Farmer’s Loan improved 1; Reading Bonds, 3. ‘ At the second board Harlem declined % per cent, Norwich and Worcester, 34; Canton, }s, and Reading Bonds advanced }. There was more activity at the second beard than usual. The fluctuations from day to day in quotations for fancy stocks are a fair index of the feverish state o the market. Holders of stocks appear to be strong, and little disposed to submit to any important decline, and it is almost impossible to get up any speculative move- ment sufficiently extentensive to carry prices up more than one ortwo per cent. Money is abundant, the market easy, and the indications are decidedly in favor ofan improvement in stocks generajly ; but it will be sometime before an advance is realised to any extent. Speculators in breadstuffs are in good spirits: and feel confident of a rise in prices and an extensive demand from abroad for consumption. The Cincinnati and Columbus papers state that counterfeit bills on the State Bank of Ohio, of the de- nomination of five dollars, aré in circulation in both diaces. Theengraving is said to be badly executed. The counterfeit bills are a little shorter than the genuine; andthe plate on the back is deep red, in- stead oflight orange. Observe, also, that in the coun- terfeit the werd “ Bank” is omitted in the plate, on the back, reading “ State of Ohio,” instead of “ State Bank of Ohio.” In the head of Franklin, on the left end of the face of the bill, the engraving is poor, and the left eye is omitted. By observing a little caution, the above description will enable any one to detect these counterfeits. There will be, without much doubt, more miles of railroad opened this year than in any previous one since these works were first commenced in this coun- try, Independent of the many new lines about being completed, the extewsion of old roads is progressing very rapidly, and sections of country most remote from the Atlantic have been connected with the prin- cipal markets of the Union. Abut three hundred miles of railroad will be brought into use this year in this State ; about five bundred in New England; in New Jersey thirty miles; Ohio, fifty miles—making in these States nearly nine hundred miles of road. Be- sides this, there are at least one hundred miles in pro- gress, part of which will be completed in 1849. ‘The Saratoga and Whitehall Railroad will be finished in October. The business already done on that por- tion which is finished, exceeds the most sanguine ex- pectations. s The Hartford and Providence Railroad Company have contracted for three thousand tons of railroad iren, weighing sixty pounds to the yard. The con- tract is made at fifty dollars a ton, and the :ron is to be delivered in New York next spring, to be sub- ject to the most rigid inspection 1n this country. The contract at present prices abroad will leave a very $6500 Treas Notes, 6's 10336 25 shs Canton Co bnw lo bi of those sections of country intersected by them, but they develope the resources of them to such an extent that the sources of production become enlarged be- yond the mest extravagant estimates, Stock Exchange. 7000 Uh's Int Imp, of 47 Bk WO di a aS IES 600 City 5's, of '70 41¢ 100 Mohawk RR_ 12m 76 14200 Ohio 6's, of 00 $98) 150 Nor & Wore RR, 3 200 Ilinois Fundable 4132 26. lo 610 37 6000 do 41° 300 Erie7 per ct Bas 9t |. 2000 Reading Rds 810 100 do NG 20 rhs Manhattan Bk 1000, do biz 9434 10 Leather Bk 15 Erie RR, now, full 30 65 3NY Bk 1% 10 do ry 100 Farmers’ Trazt = wi) 2b lo do of 360 do 230 2% 100 Harlem RR 60 5414 100 do 25% 100 do ‘DOO bt 40L I Fire Ins Co Wr 180 do B30 St 50 Paterson RR 180 do ‘pOD Bt % Canton Co 300 do 53% cy do 100 do 860 537, M15 do 200 do St w do 800 Long Island RR 25 wo do 400 do 380 278g » do 100 do d60 27% 50 do 100 do a oO do bs 36 Second $00 Treas Notea 1034 50 ahs Harlem RR 130. 537% 0 Reading Bonds 5646 100 Morris Canal vs 9% 100 ehs Hariem RR 53° 50 do 9: 100° do s6m SS" 100Long Island RR 960 25 wD do 60 64g 100 Reading RR 32 150 do Se 10 do Busy m0 do 260 25Nor & Wore RR 36 100 do a 63! 50 Canton Co 35% 100 do 53! 10 Erie RR Oo 100 do b15 533 CITY THADE REPORT. Another steamer, with later news. be- ing about due, caused some less ‘activity in freights. It was also found difficult to fill vessels immediately | with grain. The last news left the actual state of the crops in Great Britain in so much doubt as to cause much anxiety to obtain later intelligence, which it is eet will prove more decisive, one way or the other. BRYAN & Yesterday, a benevolent association, called the Improved O:der of Red Men, went down the Po- tomac, ona pleasure excursion. _On board, v a man whohad served two terms as a marine. Exposure in Mexico, in the battle-field, had un- dermined his health, and he came to this city for recieation, as well ag to procure hig land warrant. Thinking that the trip on our beautiful river would do lum good, he took passage. His bronzed and emaciated face, hollow eyes, and tottering frame, attracted general attention, and evoked the best feelings of the heart, in sympathy. The boat reached the steamboat wharf, on its return, at about eleven o’clock. This poor fellow wi among those who first landed. It being dark— raining at the time—it 1s supposed that he stepped upon a slippery log, which caused him to fall over- board. {tmmediately, the alarm was given ; cries went up from women and children, and the great- est excitement was man‘test. His body was recovered fifteen minutes afterwards. All the eflorts fto restore him to life were jineffectual. He who had escaped the dangers of the Gulf, and ot the battle, had ceased to exist. A jury of in- ee rendered a verdict in accordance with the acts: 1 have been informed that the President has not yet ordered a court martial, or court of inquiry, and that it is not probable he will do so, to inves- tigate the charges made by Col. Benton, in the Senate, sgainst Major Graham, of having acted improperly as a member ot a tormer court martial against Lieut. Col. Fremont. The President, no doubt, feels ashamed _ of those proceedings, and is not willing to give the community another occa- sion to complain of the enormous expense curred, with so little of good to the tax-payers. I do not pretend to express an opinion apon the merits of this case, not deeming it of sufficient importance. i “Old Bullion” is yet engaged in writing out the speech he delivered in the nate, three or four weeks ago, against General Keamy, and ggiving the history of Col. Fremont’s expldits in Califor- nia. The Union and the Intelligencer have simul- taneously published the several parts of this pro- duction fr is the opinion that, at the next ses- sion, an investigation will be made into this act of the Colonel—publishing what took place in execu- {ve session, the injunction of secresy not having been removed. he Colonel, however, claims that he has a right to make public what he himselt does, and we think that, to some extent, he is nght. A stump speech, par reellence, must contain, as a necessary qualification, due proportions of smutty stories, abuse and profanity. It is then considered pungent—e first-rate speech— burra for Taylor '—three cheers for Cass! Washington, albeit, not entitled to vote, has perpe- trated ite mite in the good cause of agitation.
