Since February, 1846, the movement in all the leading departments bave nearly doubled, and | the expausion gathers strength as it goes on. an inflation has been going on in the line of dis- counts, circulation. specie paid in has been reduced. The system upon which the banking movement in Ohio is established, is by nO means a sound one, and its existence depends en- | tirely upon each institution being kept within proper bounds, We find, in this State, it is impossible to prevent explosion under a system much sounder than stem may be, if mode- rately expanded, it by no means follows that it will bear any amount of tension, and the most perfect system ever invented, will, if not judiciously ma- | naged, prove nothing but @ bubble. fund system of this State was adopted, it was con- sidered, by the most experienced financiers of the age, the most perfect one ever established. tion, for many years, gave universal satisfaction, and institutions formed under its provisions enjoyed the highest credit, and their paper issues were con- sidered as safe as the gold itself. sion continued until failed that the fund formed for the liquidation | of their liabilities, proved insufficient for that | purpose, and the public began to investigate the af- | faire of all these institutions more throughly than ever before. The result of thisexaminstion was fatal to | the rysten ; and another more general in its character, more simple in its provisions, more certain in its se- curity, and unlimited in its application, became the favorite, and must ultimately become universal in its operation. The free banking law of this State was the first syatem of the kind ever established in this It has now been in existence about ten years, and the public have been better protected by itthan by anyother. The Legislature ot Ohio, a few years ago, adopted a banking system somewhat simi- lar to the free banking system of this State, and | with afew exceptions, all the banks of that State | have been established under that system. There is, however, attached to the tien in Ohio, a regulating power, called the “Board of Control,” which is calculated to do more harm than good, and which will prove fatal to many institutions in the State. This Board of Control consists of a presi- dent, and a delegate from each branch of the State Bank, and exercises a supervisory influence over the affairs of the respective branches, for the faithful management of which the whole are jointly and seve- rally responsible. The State Bank makes no issue, ex- cept through its branches. The value of such a com- bination has been pretty clearly illustrated, in this State, under the safety fund system; and its security, in Ohio, in the event of any embarrassment or diffi- culty among the banks, will prove no better than that realised among our own banks. ‘The latest returns of the State Bank and branches, present the annexed comparative statement of aggre- ady market, wt a deposits, the capital Fis continued’ steady. with sales of 300 to 400 bi mackerel, including No. 1's, at In other descriptions we could hear of no els of corn were engaged for a direct port in Ireland at 11d ; another vessel was taken up to load with corn, on private terms.
