INTELLIGENCE BY THE MAILS. Barimonsg, Sept. 4, 1848. Trial Trip of the Steamer Isabel—One Day to Charleston—Serrous Accident— The Shark, &c. ‘The steamer Isabel, the first ocean steamer built in Baltymore, will start on her trial trip this morn- ing, for Norfolk, She is 224 feet in length, and has an engine of 500 ‘se power. She is to be taken nto the dry dock at Norfolk and coppered, and on her return to Baltimore, will take freigh; and passengers for Charleston—Capt. Rollins in- tending to demonstrate the assertion he has made, that a steamship of the power of the Isabel can make the trip form this port to Charleston in forty hours, and spending only one night atsea; thatis to say, leaving here st Go’clock in the morming, and arriving at Charleston between 9 and 10 o’clock in the next evening. Thomas D Johnston, late of the firm of Lee & Johnston, was thrown out of his carriage on Sa- turday, and seriously bruised—but no bones were broken. For the last two or three days, our water-side folks have been watching anxiously for the shark. that attacked a boy whilst swimming from one of our wharves last week; he has been frequently seen Sending about, but he avoids ail the nume- rous hooks that have been baited for him. f The remains of Wm. S. Brunner, Esq., assis- tant editor of the Amertcan, were followed to the ees yesterday, by an immense concourse of tiends and admirers. The Monumental Lyceum, with the assistance of the Typographical Associa- tion, have purchased a lot in Greenmount Ceme- tery, and propose erecting a monument to his me- mory. Purvape ruta, September 4, 1848. Political Movements— Accidental Death, §c. ‘The sitting of the democratic nominating con- vention has attracted the usual crowd, at Sixth and Chestnut streets, to-day, much to the delight of the various taverns and refectories :n the neigh- borhood, who are thriving from the thirst engen- dered by the warm discussions arising among the friends of the candidaies. The convention has moved unusually slow to-day, the whole morning having been expended in taking four ballots for the Clerk of the Quarter Sessions. On the last ballot Thomas Doyle was nominated. They are now balloting for Auditor, / Re ‘Thos. Mcllvaine, a man of family, was yester- day killed on the tow path, above Manayunk, by a mule that he had mounted throwing him off, when his foot caught in the stirrups, he was dragged a considerable dietance, and his seull fractured. He belonged to this city, and resided in the western section, near the Schuylkill. Sr. Lovis, Aug. 23, 1848. News from the West. There was an arrival, a few days since, at Fort Leavenworth, from Fort Chiles, the new military post at Grand Island, in the Platte. Lieutenants Mara and Singenfelter left that station with two companies, on the llth, and made their way through a very dangerous country in twelve days. The Pawnees, at this tume, are quite hostile, and are taking every American scalp they can lay hold of. They have, for along time, been disaffected, but recently new difficulties have arisen, Some three weeks since, Col. f’owell concluded a treaty with one of the bands, for the land at Grand Island, on which the fort is situated, but in distributing the usual presents, oflence was given to a very in- fluential chief, and hence the new trouble. About seventy miles this side of Fort Chilos, there is a village of Pawnees who are friendly to the whites. When my informants arrived there, the principal chief urged them not to remain over night, as many of his Pons ment had grown “bad,” and would, no doubt, kilf them. The old chief shed tears when they lett, telling them he feared they would be waylaid and killed. Near this village they met a train on its way to the fort, under charge of Capt. Steele. They were warned of the danger, and an express was sent on to Col. Powell, apprising him of the state of affairs. Where 1s a rumor atFort Leavenworth that Capt. Gillespie, U. ©. Marine Corps, recently promoted for his gallantry in Califorma, will be ‘the subject ot a “ aanling over the coals” for alleged malfei- sance inthe discharge of his duties some montis ago. t seems that a large number of govern- mient mules were Je{ft im his care at Fort Leaven- worta, when Commodore Stockton got in from Califorma. These, contrary to instructions, he disposed of at private sale, at merely nominal prices, much to the advantage of the purchasers, as the same mules, a short time after, were resold te government ata high rate. Report says that the gallant captain cleared a few thousands by the Transaction . Fort Leavenworth is now under command of Brev. Maj. Scott, of the First Infantry. Nearly all the old garmson have recently been discharged. The troops which will soon arrive trom New Mex- ico, will be mustered out of the service at Fort Leavenworth, and not at Independence, as pre- viously announced. ff The weather is very warm here, but our city, thus far, continues healihy. Political excitement is atfeverheat. Yours, Argus. it America. (From the Honduras Observer, Aug. 5.) We are in possession of papers from the city of Gua- temala to the 3d of July, and learn that the country continues in the same disturbed state as heretofore— no better,no werse Some misunderstanding appears to have arisen between the governmentand the French Consul, the following abstract of the particulars of which we copy from the Official Gazette:— Last week an important circumstance in the politi- cal annals of our country took place. Mr. Challaye, the French Consul General ed interim in Guatemaia, ceased exercising his fanctious with this republic, and as the caute for so doing appears to proceed from some Offensive publication in this Gazette, we consider it necessary briefly to explain what happened. ‘We shall not refer to the documents, although we have seenthem. On Sunday the lith inst., the Con- sul eonyoked at his house all the French citizens in Guatemala, with the view of adopting some rerolutions manifesting to the provisional government their adhe- sion to the French republic. At this meeting, some difference of opinion occurred, and a protest was pre- sented to the Consul against the malevolent senti- ments, which they, the signers, supposed the editors of this Gazette expressed towards France, and the go- yernment recently established. ‘The Coneul, who was requested to certify to the pro- test, that it might be printed, thought proper to adopt it as his own, and he first signed it with ninet of his fellow citizens, and without any communication with this government, addressed @ note to iton the 14th inst., with the protest enclosed, at the same time making the peremptory and extraordinary demands hereafter alluded to, Here we ought to 0! ve that the Consul, by adepting and signing the document, confounded his official character with that of his com- triota, and expresses himself warmly against what Ee thinks to be the political tendency of this gover ment, and he appears to us desirous of suppressing pub- lic opinion in the country in which he resides. ‘After assuming that everything mentioned in the protest was strictly true, and much more might be ald- ed, nevertheless many of them might be considered aseertions, without proofs, and might well be con: dered as very Unnecessary deciamation, the consul de- clares that be thinks it absolutely necessary to demand that his letter and protest should be published in the next week’s Gazeife, both in French and Spanish, deviation whatever from the originals, ould be in the first page and first o jumn, and to appear as the first article, hence giving the preference to his communication to any thing however important, the government might bh to make public, with «ther humiliatiag refinements; con- cluding with a declaration that it was bis firm deter- mination not to rnier into any correspondence, and that he would not retract from any of the, conditions above exprerted. More , the consul insinuates that ‘f¢ French republican government ix not disposed to ac& toward- KO governments with the same moderation as the past government did, an assertion which we caunot ve, as we do not doubt that the popular wish of the French fs fraternity and moder tion with every nation on the earth, aud most espe- cially with the youthful republics of this continent. The government of Guatemala being denied the power of removing the effects produced by any equivo- cal impressions. which he bas made the merit of.it has no other resource but to manif st to Mr. Challaye its intention of referring the affair to the French govern. ment ‘The consul on the 20th of the present month again wrote, that be was under the inexorable necessity of centing all political relation h this republic, and on the next day at twelve o'clock, he would haul down ‘Trouble between boa French Republic and c his coneular colors and (he national arms of France, to show that his polition acter with this government had concluded aod acoordingly, at 12 o'clock next day, he bauled down the colors and the consulate arms Tue Munperer or Mr. Scuooicrart.—Letters, says the Cleveland Zimes, received tram Sault St. Marie, state that disclosures have been receady dy, indicating that the assassina- Schooleraft, near that fort, i, was directly or indirectly the act of Lie len, the officer who was subsequently »victed of robbery and murder ia the city of Meaico, wud senteaved to be hanged. made at Fort I ton of the late J ‘on the 6th of Avroistaewrs ry rue Presse yt.—Charles Mo- Vean, of New York, to be Attorney of the United States for the southern distret ot New York, vice Benjam *.
