Bautinore, Sxrt. 2, 1848. The Shark Excitement—The Wownded Boy— Death of « Member of the Press— Commerce— Theatricals, §¢. : The fact of a shark being prowling about in our harbor continues to cause much excitement, and he was yesterday several times discovered scudding about. Efforts were makiug for his capture. The boy who was attacked by him, on ‘Thursday, will lore bis leg or his life, as he is cut to the bone both above and below the knee, his leg having been drawn up in the act of swimmisg when he was ined William § Brunner, FE young and talented ber of the press. having been for several years an- geged as an svristant inthe editorisl department of the Baltimore imerican, died on Thursday aight. He was univerenily esteemed and his funeral, on Sunday morning will be attended by more sincere mournersthan perhaps could be called together by the death of any ‘other young wan in the city He was but twenty-eight years of age, and bas been called thus early, but not Unprepares, to bir last dread account. Ff Several military and fire companies of Washington city are preparing to pay our city a visit, on the ap- preaching 12th of Sr ptember, to join in the celebration of the anniversary of the battle of North Point. ‘The number of vessels at present in our harbor, ex- elusive of bay craft, is 13 ships, 14 barks, 28 brigs, and 37 schooners—making a total of $2 versels The opening of Holliday street theatre has been de- ferred until the weather becomes cooier; and in the mean time is undergoing a most extensive repair and refitting The Musevm has also been refitted, and will be opened on Monday evening, by Messrs. Hann & Silsbee. pironbeye. Ua” § Puitavecrnia, Sept..2, 1843, Young, the Rroter—Connubial Troubles—Cruelty toa New York Boy, &c. The decision of the court of quarter sessions in elation to the case of Jacob W. Young was slightly modified yesterday, and he was held to bail, in $2000, to answer at the next term for inci- ting to riot. A curious scene transpired last evening in the vicinity of Sixth and Pine streets. A poor baker, suspecting that his wife had endowed him with andubitable claims to citizenship among the resi- dents of cuckledom, took occasion to watch her movements, after he had left his domicil, as she supposed, to his customary nightly avocation of preparing bread not only tor himself, but others.— ‘The jealous husband saw his frail wife enter a house of assignation, with the burly landlord of atavern, nearby. Afterthey had disappeared into the recesses of the den, the man of dough made his way into it, and going to the foot of the stair- case, leading to the upper stories, he called his wife by name. Her paramour, however, made his appearance instead, and, being far the superior of the husband, forced him out of the house. The transaction caused # crowd to gather, and an ap- peal wasmade to the watchman, but he declined interfering, not having witnessed any breach of the peace. The wife, like a prudent woman, made her escape through the crowd, unperceived by her injured “gude man,” who, itis probable, was deluded into the belief that he had been mistaken, on pepiraing home and finding her there, safe and sound. Governor Johnston will speak to-night at the whig meeting, called to ratify his own nomination for Governor. " Quite a masterly movement is abont to be made by the Rough and Ready men in the firat_Con- ressional district, in the nomination of David ‘aul Brown, Esq. as their candidate. The excel- dence of this nomination would be universally ad- mitted, that his election would be certain. Charles J. Hollis, a young Philadelphian, who has been residing a short time at Camden, has been nominated as the Tavlorcandidate in the first Congressional district of New Jersey. An intelligent lad, aged 14, and calling himselt James Henry Dewey, and bailing from New York city, was brought to the hospital this morning with his foot badly crushed by accident. He states that he came on to the city on board of a schooner ; that the captain, on arriving in the Schuylkill, flogged him and turned him adrift; that he went ou board a canal boat, and when opposite Carr’s Garden, his foot was crushed,b: tween two boats, while bemg towed down the stream. The injur: rendering him useless, he was again turned adrift, and left on the bank of the river. While in this deserted state, Col. Carr took pity on him, and after providing for the boy’s necessaries at his own mansion, this morning had him brought to the hospital, for the purpose of receiving proper saetibal trbetanent The lad has a mother living in New York, and he 18 anxious that she should know his present whereabouts, and the accident that has befallen him. Webster, Captain lst Artil- tellect, declares that the present restrictive Custom- use sytem in Mexico, particularly as it relates to ‘Tampico, eught not to exist a day lenger. The atten- tion of the President is called to the proximity of the genius of American enterprise, now on the left bank of the Rio Grande ‘The prohibitive operation of the Mexican custom houre law, is now quite illusory as a general fact. for though goods may be prevented from entering by the regular porte, it will be totally impossi- Die to keep them from being introduced along the whole line of the frontier. Tampico is susceptible of becoming one of the most flourishing porisin Mexico; but it must be through a change in the( ustomhouse and other fiscal regulations. The Ayuntamiento. therefore, beseech the Foeoutive to take into consideration the following pro- Pporitions: That there shall henceforth be no probibi- tion of any class of goods or provisions: that lamber and ali building mat+riais pay ouly a municipal tax of five per cent, (ad valorem we preeume): that provisions pay 18 percent. to the government, and 1 per cent. municipal tax: that flax, wool. and silk, pay 40 per cent, and cotton and bale goods, (ubarrotes) 30 per cent. each. The Ayuntamiento are of opinion that all prohibitions whieb ‘are inoperative from the facilities for smuggling, should cea-e now und forever, aud that moderate duties should be fixed on allarticles hitherto excepted from the Mexienn tari! All these sugzes- tions are made under the conviction that commerce should be free from all trammels, when Tampico would have a long and assured carver of prosperity before her, instead of seeing, as wow but the miserable entry of two or three vessels a month in that port With the revenue which the adoption of these sug: ertions would give Txrwpivo she would be able to Eniid'e loves slong the river frpat, erect public build: ings, construct necessary roads. &c.. &e . all which are necessary to her prosperiiy but which an empty ¢ ea sury now forbids her to underiake There was no Awerican verse! at Tampico when the General Hamerlef¢ Britich brig Henry was to be sold at auction, having been a-hore on the bar — Brig Ventor, of Liverpool. while being towed out b; the Mexican launch, grounded on the bar, and will Probably be lost.— N. 0. New Streamvoat Ling to New Youx.—We un- derstand that the Norwich and Worcester Rail- road Company have sold iheir interest in the steambout line between New York und Norwich, consisting of the steamers Worcester, Kaicker- becker #nd Cleopatra. The purchasers are seve- Tul intell gent and enterprising steamboat owners of the cities of New York and Norwich, viz: Messrs, Daniel Drew and lsnac Newten, of New York, proprietors of the People’s line of boats oa the Hudeon river, and Messrs. R Converse & Co, ‘Wm. W. Coit and Horace Whitaker, of Norwich, owners of several propellers, and largely interést- ed in the coust navigation. The new company affords a combination of capital, skill and expe- rience which seems eufficient to ensure success to their new enterprise. It 18 said to be their de- termmation to place the new line on the Sound upon an equal footing in pouat of speed, conifart and eafety, with that which the People’s line holds on the North river, and to make it equal at least to any line onthe Sound. They propose to build a new boat which will coms out early in the next spring, and to make other important im- provements on the line. They will contiaue to run in connexion with the Boston and Worcester ane Norwich and Worcester Railroad.—Boston fi Dicer, On Saturday morning. 2d instant, after a few days illness, Homen. only son of Dr Homer Bostwick The friend: d relatives of the family are reapectful. ly invited to attend his funeral from the resi of his father, No 604 Broadway, Sunday afternoon, at 5 o'clock, without further invitation, On Friday afternoon, Sept -mber lat, Samet, son of ‘William and Jane Rhodes, aged two years and five months, ‘The friends and acquaintances of the family are re- spectfully invited to attend the funeral on this (Sun- day) afternoon, at 2 o'clock, from No. £31 Broadway, vitbout further notice.
