The stock market closed yesterday with an upward tendency in prices. The depressing sppearance of things connected with stock operations, created by the prospect ef large shipments of specie, disappeared just before the close of the weok’s business, and more favera- ble indications became visible. There is evidently a great pressure upward in prices of stocks; but the pressure is at present below the surface, and the weight above is sufficient to keep the market steady Assoon ‘as some of the most embarrassing burdens are removed the impetus upward will be suffieient to carry prices much above rates now ruling. At this season of the year there is usually a speculative movement in the fan- cies, and the bulls generally reap a harvest which the bears pluck from them as soon as the bubbles explode.— The upward movement last year commenced about the of Moy; at this time in April, 1947, prices generally were ‘rst lower than those now ruling We anuexa table showing the quotations current at throe periods le year, and the latest prices this :— Quotations ror Stocks in THe New York Maney, April 15, May '5, June 15, April 15, MMT, 47. ie el 105, 106 78 #2 73 100, 102 8 35) i 30 9 1 9} 99) 39) g 52 64 Norwich hs Worcester tox 4 506 3% La nx 28% 30 st Seotlagton a 55 60 The above table bnews that prices on the 15th of June averaged an advance of more than five per cent within the previous two months. With a fow exeeption prices rule higher now than at the corresponding period last year, without such favorable prospecta for an im- provement. The importations of specie lest year, time were large; the exportation of our principal pro- duots was enormonsly large, and the elements of pros perity were in tho mort healthy condition. The enly drawback to the most prosperous times, was the drain on account of the war Tho large loans reqnired at that ‘ime by the government, carried away the specie almort an rapidly as our large shipments of broadstuffs brought it into the country, avd the poor prospects of pence tea ded very muoh to destroy publio confidesoe, and oo: settle all the operations of trade The rteady influx of mpecle mado money more sbundent than jt hod hoon for « long time Defire, en’ the dlements of speodtafion -began to develope themselves, For # time the advance in the fancies wae goneral ; but finally cornering combinations became visible, and two or three of the favorite railroad securities start. e1 in advance of all others. Harlem, and Norwich and Worcester, were the favorite bubbles, and they were in- tlated to am enormous extent. Harlem, reached seventy- four per cent, and Norwich and Worcester sixty-six per cent—the former twenty-two percent and the latter thirty per cent above prices now current. It may sppeat to meny that there is full this margin for an advance, in the event of another combination being formed; but tbat is hardly possible. The actual value of Harlem has much increased since that time, and holders generally have much more confidence in ite ultimate productiveness; and its market value must ultimately become greater than any speculative movement created. It is hardly probable, however, that there will be, this season, any great fictitious inflation in prices for this stock; an advance of five or ten per cent may be realized upom its own intrinsic merits; but that improvement would induce so many to realise that it could not be sustained. Norwich and Worcester appears to be in avery bad way.” Some of its most powerful friends have abandoned it, and others, who have been rather disposed te bull it’ have become desperate bears. Mort of this stock is held by one house in the street, and the shorts may get caught when they little dream of it. So faras the business Prospects of the road are concerned, they are gloomy enough, and the market price is about all it is worth. The connection with Nashua may give it an increase of business, but not to an extent suffloient to improve its financial condition much. {t is in contemplation to ap- ply for an increase of ten thousand shares of capital stock, for the purpose of meeting the indebtedness atout matnring With all these things weighing upon the company, we see no immediate prospect of any improve- ment—no basis for even a speculative movement, or any possibility for a depression in prices to any ex. tent. It mey fluctuate from thirty-five to forty per cont, and we have no doubt many could realize at the highest named price. Since last April, there has been quite am improve- ment in Stonington Railroad. Since that timethe com- pany have declared and paid two dividends of two and a half per ornt each, and will pay another of at least two anda half, acd perhaps three per cent, on the Ist of May, proximo. This stock is now selling at sixty per cent, and we see no reason why there should not be a steady improvement in its market value. 1f the com- pany psy punctually semi-annual dividends of two and half or three per cent, the stock is worth at least nine- ty per cent; and that the earnings of the road will ena- ble the company to declare such dividends, is beyond a question, even without any increase in the income of last year. This must be the favorita through route to Boston, on account of its distance, speed, and comfort, and as such, must command » large part of the through travel. Its looal travel is ex- tensive, and the openimg of lateral roads leading into tho interior of the most populous manufacturing dis- tricts of Rhode Island, will give it @ large increase of business. On the first of May the connection will be made with the Boston and Providence and the Provi- dence and Worcester, by which the ferry at Providence will be avoided, the time between Boston and New York reduced about one hour, and the comfort of travellers very much enhanced. About the middle of May the new and magnificent steamboat Connecticut will be put upon the route, to run im connection with the C. Van- derbilt, forming a line equal, if not superior to, any other on the Sound. It is estimated that the distance between the two cities will be covered in ten hours. Such are somo of the advantages of this route, which tend to give the Stonington Railroad its value; and when we take into consideration the reduced cost of the line, the peou- Mar position of its debt, and the economy of its mang; ment, it is impossible to doubt for » moment but that the stock, as an investment, is equal to any in the mar- ket. Speculators cannot do much with it ; they connot get hold of enough to get up a corner, and there is, therefore, no prospect of any sudden inflation in prices. A steady improvement until it reaches its actual value, will be realized, when the stook may be more plenty in the market. The dividends now pay such a heavy inte. rest on the investment, that holders will not part with the stock. The annexed table exhibits the quotations in this mar ket for the principal speculative stocks for each day of the past week, and at the close of the week previous.
