D’s., §c. The German shoemaker, George Daut, who attempted to murder his wife on Saturday moraing, was, it appears, laboring under insani- ty at the time, to which he was periodically sub- ject. The wounds given, though serious, are not of a tatal nature. The fine propeller boat, built here under con- tract, for the Hartford and Albany line, was lJauached to-day, at high water. The body of the child was found in the po pool of the house in which she lived as domestic, with its throat cut. Her name is Julia Wesley. This adds another to the long list of homicide cases now on our criminal calendar. The news by the Hibernia, that has flowed in upon us to-day, is the sole topic of conversation. Four hundred M. The moat active stock in the list was Harlem, and between the boards there was a dispo- tition exhibited to wait the further effect of the news. Among stock speculators, the advices from the other sidéafé considered favorable; that 1s, favorable for the bull party—favorable fora rise in our fancy stocks, and a moderate improvement in the more solid securities, The advance in consols is considered a good omen; and a, the movements on the continent partake of some defi. nite shape, and become more settled, a better state of things will be realized in Great Britain, and public con- fidence become more permanently established. The po- aition of financial affairs in England regulates things on this side; the London money market is the baromecer d so long as that points to fair weather, it does not matter much what the weather ison the continent. The suspension of the Bank of France, the failure of dosens of the largest banking houses on the continent, the complete derangement of public and private finances in all the European govern- ‘ts, have less influence upon our fimances tham @ slight decrease in the supply ot bullion in the Bank of England, or the advance of ene per cent. in the Tate ef interest throughout Great Britain. Those connected with the financial! affairs of the contl- nent must suffer seriously, and it isa question if the heuse of Rothschilds can weather the storm wh'ch they are surrounded. Wesee by the accounts from Paris that the heads of the three houses bearing that name, were in that city endeavoring to make such arrange: ments with the provisional government as would secure the claims agatust the former government. They were making great efforts tqrestore public confidence, and get the public debt acknowledged, and signified their willingness to pay up the balanoe of the debt of fifty mil- Mons of dollars—about ten millions of whioh had been paid when the revolution commenced—if the govern: ment would provide for the payment of the interost on the public debt generally, Thisis a financial operation worthy ofthe Rothschilds; but the provisional govern- ment have financial matters of more importanee toattend to, and the Rothschilds will have to patiently wait the course of events. In the event of these financiers suc- ceeding in getting the whole debt of France acknow- ledged by the provisional government, and restoring pub- jic confidence, they would take advantage of the effect of such movements, and dispose of every fraction of their interest before the convention had {ime to repudiate the debt, or any part of it. It is fortunate for the people of France at this crisis, that the public finances are in & deplorable position, as it prevents the provisional govern- ment, and will prevent the convention, from making any Premature movement in relation to the publiodebt, The whole financial system of France will experience as great @ revolution as its political system—the whole banking system of the republie will undergo a thorough re-orga- nization, and be modelled something after the system in operation in this country. The cause of the refusal on the part of the brokers, was the want of funds. The Tennessee banks have within the past six months reduced their circulation more then three millions of dollars, and redeem their notes prompt- ly on demand. It thus sppears that because a few bro- kers, having no capital to carry on the business in which they are engeged, successfully, because they are so poverty stricken as to be unable to purchase all the bank bills offering, that the credit of the banks is shaken, and apenic is crested. It is full time for a panic when the banks refuse to redeem their bills at their counters. Nothing satisfactory or definite has been determined upon relative to the Wooster Bank of Ohio. The cirou- lation in the hands of the public when the bank sus- pended was about four hundred thousand, and the amount of specie on hand was about one hundred thou, sand dollars. It is understood that the officers of the bank have determined to pay their depositors It is im- posible to tell at present what per cent the bill holders will recive; but the prospect is by no means flatterin, The quantitiy of coal trapported on the Reading Rail- road for the weak ending the 6th inst., wae 25,892 tons, making the aggregate for the season 214,882 tons. The shipments by the Schuylkill Canal for the week ending the 6th inst , were 7,103 tons, making the aggregate for the season 12,107 tons. Total receipts from the Schuyi- kill coal ‘region this season, up to April 6th, 226 989 tons. The Schuylkill Canal Company have commenced the season with the most flattering prospects, and we have no doubt its coal business this year will tend very much to releive it from;the embarrassments which have #0 long weighed upon it The Reading Railroad Com- pany will doubtlees do a large business this year; but no very great increase on that of last year, can be expected.
