Brutal Attempt to Murder a Wife—University of Pennsylvania—A Stranger Crushed to Death on a Railroad—The Steamship Columbus —Re-passage of Bills Vetoed by the Governor. George Doert, a German shoemaker, living in the upper part of the country, made a most brutal attempt upon the life of his wife this morning, about 4 o’cloek. He commenced beating her, when, ‘to evade his fury, she at- tempted to escape by jumping from the eecond story window, when he grappled her, and in- flicted seyeral violent blows upon the back of her head with his hammer, and stabbed her with a knife. Her screams brought assistance to rescue violence; but her “afte ries are of s0 serious a nature that very little hopes are en- tertained of her recovery.
