by the Logielature of this State, for the relicf of the oompany, the stockholders #1ii forfeit their stock unless this instalment is pald up. This company, io anticipa- t'on of the assessment being paid in, wads contract for the fron to relay the road, and the advance on the mar- ket price of iron has since been such that they could realias a profit of $16,000, provided they wiched to die- pose ef their contract. In the event of any stookboldey “wishing to forfeit bis stock, instead of prying up the Instalnrents, it is optional tor them to do so; but by giv- ing the company notice of their intentioa to forfeit, it would facilitate them in their arrangements. ‘The reoeipts of the Harlem Railroad Company for the firet thre jonths ia each of the past fire years, have been as aanexcd:— New Yorn. Pantax AND Azpant Bargeao- Gross Keceipts. Ja. 181s, January. Gist wes 11300 February. ... tis 742) 8.709 i Marea 7.950 = 10,59 12010 it 917 Totl....821n7 28200 Sule A808 ‘This ehows an jnoreass of nearly two hundred per cent since 1844—an increasy of nearly one hundred per cent slave 1816, and an increase thus far, of about fifiy per cent on the receipts forthe corresponding period in 1847, Aninerease to this extent throughout the year: would give an aggrogate income for 1843 of about three hundred and ninety thousand dollars. This, however, excoeds our previous estimate, which ws aro still dis- posed toadhere to, viz: three hundred and sixty-five thousand dollars, qual to an average of one thourand dollars per duy throughout the year. It is very proba- ble that amount will be exceeded, as the arrangements recently made between the Harlem und the New Haven companies, will increase the receipts very largely when the connection is made, which is contemplated by the firet of November next, as far as Bridgeport, at all events, The opening of that portion of the New Haven road before the close of winter navigation, will secure to the New Haven line and the Marlem Company, the whole of the northern, northeastern oud northwestorn travel during the next winter. ‘This is alone eufficient to give any road a good income ; but the local travel between this city and Bridg»port must be very great, the whole of which must pees over fifteen miles of the Harlem road. By the terms of the contract recently made between the president and directors of the New York and Har- lem, and the New York and New Haven railroad com- panies, tho Harlem company are to receive fourteen conte per head for every passenger traneported on this road by the New Haven company, when the number does not exceed one thousand per day—when it does x- Coed one thourand, and does not exceed twelve hundred and fifty, twelve and s bulf cents per head are to be paid, &nd so on in about the same proportion. Itis estimated by the New Haven company that they will average two thousand per dey; but as the averagé is not taken into consideration in making the change, the Herlem compasy have all the advantege of the fluctuations. In regard to the transportation Of freight, arrangements equally fair and satisfac. tory have been made. Whatever depot room the New Haven company may want, end the Harlem can spare, is to be purchased of the Harlem at the original Cost price, adding interest from the original period of purchase by the Harlem company, to the time of sale to the New Haven company. A double treck from the Harlem river to the junction of the New Haven road, will scon be completed. This will give the main road a double track of fifteen miles, which willanswer for the present; bat the time is uot far distant when a double track the whole length of the ‘ine will be necessary, to giveall the facilities re- quired to meet the demand. For the first time within the history cf this road; since it first came into existence, it is now upon its feet; it is able to go alone—to support itsslf; and nothing can now arrest its progress. The bullsand bears in Woll street may depress and inflate prices for this stock, as well as all others, but they cannot effect the actual value of this tock more then they can that of the general go- yernment. They msy gst up bugbsars in the shape of chattel mortgages, to f:ighten timid holders, and the bullsmay menufscture stories for the pur- pose of inflating prices, to gat rid of what stook they may have, at handsome profits; but holders for in- ‘vestment may rest assurod that the future flactuations fa this fancy will be moderate, compared with previous speculationr; that the depreeiation will be from time to time limited, and result entirely from the operations o¢ Dears. This will, in time, disappear, and the market value of the stock keep pace with its real valuo. In the fall nearly thirty miles of extension to the ‘Harlem road will be opened, extending the line to Dover Plaine, a poict eighty-three miles from this city. » This will leave a space of about forty miles, to be covered, to complete the road between the two cities—Albany aud New York. This will be a trifling affair, after the other e'gbty-five miles cre completed, and there wiil be no difficulty experienced in pushing it through. All of two-thirds cftho right of way from Dover Plains to Chatham Corners, has already been offered to the com- pany, nod the grading is of tho mcst favorable charac- ter. Itis estimated that the whole cost of the road, when completed- the real estate, aSd running apparatus ef the company — will be within fivo millions of dcllars.— For the present length of the line, there is not @ better equipped road in the country, and in the entire manege- ment there is s proper spirit of economy exhibited, which must be attended with the most beneficial results. There isa marked diff-renos between the present position of the internal and external affairs of the Harlem Railroad Company, and that two or three years since. In fect, it is only within the past oight or ten months thst a proper ard successful effort wss made to place its finances in a proper position, The unforiunste report made last Juns— @ report utterly incorrect in the most important pointe—prevented the consummation of an arrangement at that tims, which would have fuaded the debt of the eompany, eand placed it compl+tsly out ofthe way. The ocmplexion of the report alluded to, aud the character of the contract mace between the ol] board and the New Haven company, Kad such an irjurious effect upon public ocnfidence that any stockholders became frightened and sold cut. It is true, the market price went up soon after, for this, as well as all other fancios, in consequence of the great speculative movement at that timo, but since, quotations have fallen lower than they had previously reached for years, and the bears have bed fineopportuai- ties for depresemng prices. All the old diffloulties have been cleared away, anda reaction has teken place in the public mind relative to the present and prospective value of the stock. The present manegement have had a dif- flouit tark to eecomplish, and it is surprising that they should have been so successful, amidst ths tromendous oppos ifon they have encountered,e mn among the heaviest stockholders. I: has been up hill work, so far; but they bave smooth sailing now ,and wo trust the Pre- ident end mott of the present board will remain, toresp ‘a little reward for their energy and perseverance, Fu- ture boards will have little to do in the manogement of the affairs of this company, compared with the present, or many of the past; and in a few years, thore who have son this roud in all its phases, from its commencement to its completior--{from its time of travail to its hour of deiiverance- will be sstonished at its final succers; and many who Lave heretofore ridiculed the work, prediced its failore, and the ruin of thoxe engaged in it, will ro- gret that they did mot becoms stookholders whea its stock was #0 evormously depreciated.
