The treaty, aa amended by, the Senate, will leave here on Saturdey morning, in the keeping of Mr. Commissioner Sevier. The appointment of this gentleman is, perhaps, les good a one could be made under the circumstances, Mr. Dix would have been preferred, but the faet that | us place in the Senate would necéssal be filled by a whig, was decisive; and moreover, ir- respective of this obstacle, his own wishes were averse to an acceptance of the mission. Mr. Polk, Lunderstand, was anxious te appoint Gen. Pillow, but his erbinet would not permit him to perpetrate any swch absurdity Ivis shocking to see with what eagerness the President’ anlisetens to bedaub the newly appointed officers with fuleome adulation. About Mr. Sevier, it goes into ecatacies—the laudation of Mr. W s enthusiastic, and even the bearer of despatches does not escape, but 18 de to bear his portion of the burden of official blandishments. Those gen- tlemen must feel excessively annoyed at abominable and impor yet itis not really mea indirect mode of flatt Mr. Sevier will return intely after the ratification of the treaty, ifitbe ratified. In the meantime I presume some gentleman will be ¢ signated by the Exeeutive of his Stat y his seat in the Senate natil his retu i vote of the treaty, e were four absentees—Mr. Houston, who was spirited away by the President; Mr. Pearce, who left the city, because although favorable to the treaty, yet lie nto have any y in its vatifi tion, as he has a claim against the Mexican go- vernment that ig likely to be sécured by the es- tablishment of pe and, in eddition to these, Mr. Porlps, of Vermont, and Mr. Joha M. [have read, with deep interest, the leading article in the Herald of the 12th inst. upon the treaty with Mexico; and address you for the purpose of inducing » further consideration of the important whieh I am satisfied youcan better afford, from your position and op- portunities, than almost any other man. Jeffers son, and afew of his con rs, indulged in a few scant speculations concerning the conse- ea of the on and settlement of the i id North-west territories, for which their forecast hes been immortalized ; but how urably short of the reality have their pre- fallen ? It remains for you, with larger ler developement of the Ameri- F ; to surpass them in this field of heir glory. £ wish you to signalise a great event, Which all admit must exert a tremendous influence upon the Union and the world, by an- ticipating the office of future history. I wish you to favor your readers with a philosophical and stetesmanlike view of the geographical, moral, social, and political permanent conse- quences which must result to the Union, and to sections of the Union, from the a¢quisition of the extensive portion of Mexicaa territory con- templated by the proposed treaty—how the ac- quisition will.probably efleet the workings of the federal system—how it will affect different eec- tions of the Union, in regard to American and eign emigration—how it will affect the ag- ¢ t ric ral and cota il relations of sections and States of the Union—now it willafleet our military and naval policy, &e. Itis upon these vastly momentous questions to America and to mankind, that I wish you to favor the public with your views, in a series of articles, if you will. In the Senate to-day Mr, Cass moved that the ten regiments be taken up, to the superseding of all other business, which was done. Mr. Man- gum did not wish to diseuas the bill with his hands tied by an injunction of secresy—he first wanted an executive session. Mr. Mason urged the prompt passage oi the bill. Mr. Cal- houa desired its postponement till to-morrow, with a view of an opportunity to express his ob- jections tothe measure. Mr. Baldwin made a long speech, after the old sort, in opposition to the bill—in opposition to the war—in opposition to the peace we shall probably get—in epposition to taking any territory of Mexico, aud tn favor of withdrawing the army. M len urged the passage of the bill, ae a persuasive measure for it ot the Mexicans.
